While speaking at a rally in Ohio for Hillary Bill Clinton barked back at a pro-life protester. Setting aside the former presidents obvious frustration, theres a lot to be learned from what he had to say. He reveals in his biting rant the crazed impression that his side has of the pro-life opinion:
I gave you the answer. We disagree with you,” Clinton said. “You wanna criminalize women and their doctors and we disagree… I reduced abortion Tell the truth, tell the truth If you were really pro-life, if you were really pro-life, you would want to put every doctor and every mother as an accessory to murder in prison. And you wont say you wanna do that because you know that because you know that you wouldn’t have a lick of political support.
Bill Clintons ominous sounding version of the pro-life position is filled with dark imagery of harsh punishment and cold dank jail cells. Im not sure how he came by this idea but it certainly explains why we cant communicate on the subject. Personally, Ive never heard anyone advocate the idea of making criminals of mothers and doctors or of putting them in jail. I have heard them talk about saving the lives of innocent unborn children. Ive heard prolifers talk about the physical scars and emotional pain and suffering that women who choose to have an abortion often endure. The subject of social justice and the rights of the unborn also come up in pro-life discussions as does the notion that we should place a higher value on human life. And finally, Ive heard pro-life advocates speak of reversing Roe v. Wade, which would not make abortion illegal as many think, but simply cause the issue to revert back to individual states. These are points we should find worthy of debate. I think the discussion would move forward more amicably if prejudices and attitudes like those Bill Clinton displayed in Ohio were not so much a part of the discussion.
