What does freedom of speech mean to you? Miss California, Carrie Prejean was recently in the news saying she was punished for exercising her freedom of speech on gay marriage and she said, “in America that is wrong.”
During the Miss America pageant a gay-activist judge did try to punish Prejean for her religious view on homosexuality and while some of us may hold that as reprehensible, it was not illegal.
In the First Amendment government was prohibited from passing any law that would infringe upon our freedom of speech. However, there is still nothing in the law to prevent anyone from taking exception to what you have to say…even if its a judge in a beauty pageant who votes against you over your stated religious belief. It is not “wrong in America” – this is what [is right in America], its the right to speak our mind! The consequences that may follow come from the perspectives of people in our society, not from government and we should be darn glad nobody is regulating our personal perspectives!
I hope Miss California will now step down from her soap box. We’ve all heard how she suffered an injustice, but any more teary eyed whining and crying how she was wronged and that this just shouldn’t happen in America….well, in my humble it should happen in America if we still have free speech. But, too much of the “poor me” stuff can only serve to undermine the sympathy and support she had when this story first broke.
Miss California has taken some heat for making her opinion public and thats too bad, but we do that here every day – no big deal. Lets move on.
