(Hasan shown left) The shooting at Fort Hood, near Killeen, Texas, has left at least 12 dead and 30 wounded, some critically wounded. We believe the attack took place in a crowded building where troops are processed for deployment.
Suddenly gunfire errupted and both unarmed soldiers and civilians started falling.
Many facts of the case have yet to be made public, but here is what we do know: The gunman was a soldier by the name of Major Malik Nidal Hasan. We believe that Hasan was carrying two pistols and that he was shot dead by base security.
The fact that he was at the rank of Major tells me he was probably a career Army officer. Officers are divided into two groups, company or field grade, and the later is a fairly high rank. Hasan was only recently promoted to Major. Field grade begins at Major and for a Major to requistion weapons and ammo from the base armory would have been easy, if that is what happened, at this point we are not sure.
Hasan attended the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. He graduated in 2003 with a degree in Osteopathy and later finished his residency as a psychiatrist. In 2009, Hasan completed a fellowship in Disaster and Preventive Psychiatry at the Center for Traumatic Stress.
We know for a fact, he was about to deploy to Iraq and he was unhappy about it. He didn’t want soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan. He made statements to others that Muslims should stand up to American forces. On a website he called suicide bombers good soldiers. When the shooting started he yelled out Allah U Akbar – God is Great, a slogan often repeated by Muslims radicals just before the launch and attack.
The army said two other soldiers have been detained for questioning, however other than being detained for an interview there has been no indication these soldiers were involved in shooting anyone. It now appears to only shooter was Hasan and he has survived somehow after being shot several times by a female guard.
