By now you’ve probably read about Somali born Mohamed Osman Mohamud. He’s the latest homegrown terrorist to fancy himself as a destroyer for Allah. Portland Oregon was the site of his deadly plot and the time and place were chosen in part for religious symbolism; what a spectacular show a car bomb would make when it blew up several thousand Oregonians attending a Christmas tree lighting event! One of his remarks to FBI agents pretty much sums up this man’s state of mind:
“Do you remember when 9/11 happened when those people were jumping from skyscrapers? I thought that was awesome.”
As it turns out Mohamud wasn’t at all worried about being discovered and why would he be? The totally PC City of Portland decided shortly after 9/11 to opt out of the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force training for law enforcement officers.. It’s also been a favored opinion that big east coast cities were targets but not friendly, welcoming cities like Portland! Mohamud took that sentiment to heart in planing his deadly scheme:
“People say, you know, why, anybody want to do something in Portland, you know, it’s on the west coast, it’s in Oregon, and Oregon’s, like you know, nobody ever thinks about it.”
The citizens of Portland imagined that they could turn a blind eye to the Islamist enemy. Thanks to good work by the FBI they have been spared a lesson learned the hard way by the enemy living amongst them.
Articles of interest:
“Oregon bomb-plot suspect wanted ‘spectacular show’,” by Nedra Pickler (AP) – Washington Examiner
“Portland’s Mayor Goes Into Politically Correct Mode,” by Aaron Goldstein – American Spectator
So, Portland decides not to give up essential liberty for a little temorary safety.
The feds don’t like this and decide to set up a sting operation.
This kid was incapable of doing anything at all without the help of the feds.
So, the feds scare the Hell out of the entire city.
I’m guessing that NOW, Portland will play along?
So much for liberty! So much for federalism.
The next time you ponder conservative values?
This ain’t one of ’em!
Fools.
The citizens of Oregon, Muslim and otherwise, had him in the hands of the FBI from day one of his “plot”. Though, in fact, there was no “plot” until the extravagantly stupid young man chose the most lethal of the options offered to him by, … all together now … our very own Federal Bureau of Investigations.
Sigh.
Just goes to re-enforce my oft-repeated assertion that there is a damned sight more stupidity than malice incarcerated in our penal system.
Lets see if Quentin’s assessment of this KID as incapable holds up:

The latest figures, gathered by the ATF and obtained exclusively by CBS News reveal that between 2004 and 2007 juveniles accounted for well more than half of all reported traceable explosive incidents – far exceeding gangs and hate groups combined.

NELSONVILLE, OhioPolice say the pipe bomb that blew out a downtown camera shop’s front window early Thursday was the last in a series of explosions triggered by three local teens. ** Roy E. Incidentally William Ayers and company were in their twenties when they pulled off their little bomb plots.
Libby: “The citizens of Oregon, Muslim and otherwise, had him in the hands of the FBI from day one of his “plot”. According to the quite liberal NYT article above…your full of poo, Libs!
So whats all the fussing about the FBI involvement…eh Libs? They followed up on a lead and a disaster was averted. The kid drove the events forward…even though he was offered other avenues. What would you have them do?
His family and several others in the local Islamic community condemned his actions. Good for them.
This is one of many such cases in recent history. It poses a serious problem for Muslim families with teens as well as all US citizens. It must be very worrisome for Muslim families with teenagers.
Libby, one could argue that every evil crime is also an act of stupidity. This kid was a time bomb, pun intended. Glad he is out of service. (Jack)
Quentin not sure I understand you. Where would Oregon be giving up any liberty if they had allowed the feds to do terrorist training with their police officers?
I’ve been through this training and then some and only last year. I didn’t find anything objectionable or liberty depriving in my counter-terrorism classes. It was a lot of education, but it didn’t require me or anyone to infringe on civil liberties. So, for the sake of my own curiosity would you kindly tell me where you think the feds would have taken away any freedoms? I need details please, help me understand. (Jack)
Jack, Mr. York’s article alludes the Portland PD was angry at the Bush adminitration’s handling of the war on terror.
I don’t think the cops were angry at they way they were being treated in their training, rather they were angry at the PA’s egregious assaults on civil liberties.
No offense, Jack, but I don’t think you would recognize a usurpation of your civil rights.
Tina?
I was, of course, talking about THIS kid.
Your 653-word reply–tho well cut&pasted–doesn’t disprove my assertion. Certainly SOME kids are quite capable at bomb building–my brother’s and I were among the best! But I was talkin about this mental midget–a guy who hasn’t figured out why all these guys are just giving him everything he wants. HE doen’t have the brains to do this by himself
I would not want to bet your life on it, let alone my life! : ).
well, then, you are going to have long life of hiding under beds!
I would not want to bet your life on it, let alone my life! : ).”
But Tina, there was never any question of that. He was not part of an organization. He could never have pulled this off on his own. And, sans the FBI’s facilitation, there is every chance that by now he’d have met a nice young trollop with no patience for this jihadist nonsense, and come to realize, of nearly his own accord, that he’d been a moron … and …
we would not now have to spend many millions upon his trial and incarceration!
Damned!
Libby, (it’s your sweetie Jack speaking now) you should never say never for a guy like him. You don’t know what he was capable of doing. We saw his desire and his intent, maybe another time he might have hooked up with the real Al Qaeda or at least a real Muslim terrorist and then what? Where do you think these terrorists come from anyway, they are recruited just like this kid and then his eduction evolves until somebody gets killed. He was in a dangerous game and he deserves to be in jail.
Libby and Q: “He was not part of an organization. He could never have pulled this off on his own.” * ” But I was talkin about this mental midget–a guy who hasn’t figured out why all these guys are just giving him everything he wants. HE doen’t have the brains to do this by himself”
But that is the point isn’t it? He believed he was talking with people who were interested in the cause just as he was. You’re right, he wasn’t clever enough to smell a set up and that makes him a pawn for anyone who might want to recruit him…they use kids like this to blow people up in the ME all the time…some are much younger. There are plenty of smart jihadists who are only too willing to use and enable such a person. It’s a mistake to think it always takes a great intellect to kill people.
“Libby, (it’s your sweetie Jack speaking now) you should never say never for a guy like him.”
Jack, he was 18 freakin’ years old! No where near grown. Any 18 year old (male, most particularly) will change his “world view” six times before he’s twenty-five.
If the FBI had hauled him in, told him he’d been most thoroughly had, and then merely fed him into the database, we’d be a damned sight better off, fiscally and intelligence-wise.
I thought you conservatives were all for taking the long view … apparently, not.
” You’re right, he wasn’t clever enough to smell a set up and that makes him a pawn for anyone who might want to recruit him…”
But the only terrorist organization willing to recruit him, despite his best efforts was … altogether now …
I’d chortle, but this is gonna cost us just too goddamned much money to be funny.
Libs make no mistake that kid would have been taken in by AQ in a heart beat if they had been anywhere near him. They don’t have any employment standards. They use these kind of kids all the time, don’t you know this????. Why is that so impossible for you to see? If only you could experience this reality up close and personal just once – we would make a believer out of you.
There’s plenty of evidence for you to review, but you poo-poo it. If I recommend any books or articles you just dismiss them as rightwing hog wash and trash talk, so I am convinced you would have to see what is going on with your own eyes and hear the words of hate and murder coming from the mouths of the terrorist that want you and I dead.
Libs, (your sweetie Jack again) just one more thought on this poor kid. Yes, his views may change on most subjects really quick, but we haven’t seen a lot of Muslims changing their jihadist mindset, kids or adults. There is a reason for that too that goes pretty deep into the psyche..
They seem to get reinforced by the crowd they run with and like any good cult, once in you find it real hard to get out. Libby, as odd as it may seem coming from me…you do make some good polnts, but these are the kind of points we might see for 99% of other circumstances in other kids or other people, not for religious terrorism as we’ve come to know it.
