The LA Times is reporting action taken by newly elected Governor Brown today to curb government spending. Every journey begins with a single step…
“Governor to disconnect 48,000 cellphones in hands of state workers [Updated]”
Alarmed at discovering that the state pays for 96,000 cellphones, Gov. Jerry Brown issued an executive order Tuesday seeking to cut in half the number of devices being billed to taxpayers.Requiring 48,000 cellphones to be turned in by June 1 will save the state about $20 million a year.”It is difficult for me to believe that 40% of all state employees must be equipped with taxpayer-funded cellphones,” Brown said. “Some state employees, including department and agency executives who are required to be in touch 24 hours a day and seven days a week, may need cellphones,
I only hope he realizes this is a long, long, long journey with many important steps along the way!
Great start Jerry…I would like to see us cut down that phone size by at least another 50%. That still leaves 24,000 cells phones in the hands of state employees. That still seems like an awfully high number.
In addition to the cell phones, I would like him to investigate 500 agencies, see how many are duplicating, tehre are more than 200 comissions that are very costly, and the hundreds of programs they can be checked for duplicate as well.
I like your thinking Harriet, but sadly your number is low, there’s over 500 of these state funded commissions and boards. I’ll bet we could eliminate at least 400 of them and never know they were gone.
I should have stated I quit counting the Comissions, last year I went to the web site and asked for a list, scheesh,
So the question is how can we get the gov to take a look, WE can e-mail but I wonder will he ever even see it? What is the best way to get his attention? Perhaps a radio show, like KFBK? I don’t know.
Perhaps he can go there to answer a few questions.
Somebody get Jack and Harriet a couple of magic markers and turn em loose!
