Frankfurt: A 21-year-old man from Kosovo has been arrested for firing into a U.S. Air Force bus transporting airmen from the airport terminal to nearby Ramstein AFB.
Not much detail is being released, but what is known is the bus driver and one passenger died at the scene and two other passengers were wounded.
The shooter is identified as Arif Uka is from the city of Mitrovica in Kosovo near the Albanian border. This area has been a hotbed of political unrest for years and the recent scene of political protests and violence by Serbs against the police. The Serbs control the north side of the town and Muslim-Albanians dominate the Southern half. Just days ago a joint Serbian-Albanian police patrol was attacked on the main highway leading into Mitrovica.
Uka’s motives have not been released, but the fact he’s from Mitrovica suggests the attack was likely politically motivated. As of this moment its unknown if he’s a Serb or a Muslim, however, the Serbs have been the most aggressive lately. Serb forces in this region were bombed by U.S.A.F. planes under then President Clinton as part of NATO peace keeping efforts.
