“We Still Hold These Truths” – Heritage Foundation

This was a very moving patriotic video and of course I really enjoyed it. But, at the risk of being a buzz kill, I have to wonder: Is it possible that something so successful as the United States could become too big? That we’re too wealthy and yet too poor; too powerful and yet too impotent. . . that it’s all unmanageable?
History tells us that a democratic system is only good for about 200 years. By this time the people have figured out they can vote lavish benefits into law for themselves. They can shift the wealth as they slack off creating and building. When the people take too much and give too little back history says its over. It’s a simple principle – you can’t take out more than you put in.
When this worse case scenario happens a nation’s founding principles and idealism are meaningless. The government goes bankrupt, society goes bankrupt and nobody is happy. Dissenters from all sides demand the countries reinvention. What else could they do? We see a lot of that today in the Middle East.
As scary as it may be I think we’re well on our way in this scenario. The tensions are getting worse. We’re slipping as a world power. Taxes are high, representation is low. The national debt is beyond imagination. We’re printing paper money with nothing to back it up. Everything we buy is poised for mega-inflation, food, gasoline, metals, we’re looking at a real huge problem folks.
Corruption from industry to the government is rampant, its in the headlines almost every day. It’s like one scandal runs into the next.
The worst part is there’s no consensus what to do about it. Each side vilifies the other and that leads only to mutual self destruction. Did you ever think you would live long enough to see A congressional approval rate in the mid teens? California’s legislature is well below that!
So, instead of fixing anything we wind up doing virtually nothing while we blame everyone and everything but ourselves. Reality check: People get exactly the kind of government they deserve.
We’re passing the majority of problems along to the next generation hoping they will have the answers, but they don’t and it only gets worse.
The symptoms of a pending implosion are all around us. Look at the breakdown in Wisconsin and all the hate that is whipping up. People don’t want to deal with reality, its too painful. They want to hang on to their entitlements to the very last moment before they cause system wide failure.
It’s a long list that is at risk right now from Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, Social Security, Medicare, even the the fed reserve, GM and all their retirement trust funds, state pensions, they are all at risk. Many state budgets are broke. California’s bond rating is rock bottom and we’re billions in the red. No matter where you look it’s all at an imminent risk of collapse.
Nobody wants to make the drastic changes or the rational, but deep cuts, because we can’t handle what must be done, its too painful, too much to lose and yet that’s exactly whats going to happen anywhere if we don’t take change and manage!!!! And that my dear friends is exactly why I wonder are we getting too big, too wealthy and too poor, too powerful and too impotent to last much longer?
Very good questions Jack.
Our first mistake was forgetting that we were created a republic…and why. Democracies have self-destructed time and again throughout history. A republic has a chance only if the citizens pass on the founding principles so that they live and breathe in the daily conduct and enterprise of each individual citizen.
Which is why I posted this video.
We must begin again; we must remind ourselves and others of the obligations and responsibilities we share to the ideals of freedom, the rule of law, citizenship, and charity if we are ever to restore this republic to its once great status.
And you are correct, it may be too late.
Ironically we will suffer if we make the necessary cuts…and we will suffer if we don’t. If we don’t, however, the suffering will also mean the loss of our republic. Better we should bite the bullet now so that the republic has a chance to once again flourish.
I’m prepared to bite the bullet, as you say and do even more biting than most. However, not sure 51% of my fellow Americans are, in fact I am positive they are not. I doubt we could get anywhere close to a 51% majority to make major changes that must be made to save the union.
I would say most Americans fall into a category I would call “stupid” for lack of a better term. This group would be some combination of terminally uninformed.
They are under-educated, overly apathetic, lacking in drive, patriotism, idealism and even common sense. These dullards. . . have very little grasp how the economy and the government works, but they vote democrat every time just like good little foot soldiers.
Then there is a second category I would call them the “uber-takers”. They understand all too well how it all works, but they are just here for whatever they can get and to hell with the rest of us or the country. We tend to elect this type.
Of the remainder of these worthless, useless Americans, about 15-20% are basically hard working patriotic democrats. They think they are standing up for the little guy, but that is what the democrats were 60-70 years ago. The dems have changed to hardcore socialists years ago, they just haven’t figured it out yet. (Useful idiots)
And the rest of whats left, well, theyre the real Americans, the good people. But, there’s not enough of them. These are people willing to make any sacrifice, endure any hardship and stay informed and educated. They see it as a duty to always vote smart and they do. These are conservatives of many stripes, from Libertarians to Republicans. If I had to hang a number on this good group of Americans, I would say they number less than 20M, yet they carry the water for everyone else and keep the nation going. Which is why I think we’re urinating into the wind…stupid is winning.
The stupid side has the numbers. And the dems keep stacking the deck with more losers and reducing our odds of winning anything!
Of course this is just my “Californicated” view, some conservatives in ultra-red states with an AAA bond rating may be more optimistic. I’m very jaded. Then again, I have lived here long enough to see the horrific damage the democrats have done to what was once our most prosperous and beautiful state in the nation. We once had the cleanest states with the best highways, best schools, best universities, best incomes and best opportunities. We had low taxes and low crime! It was just a great place to invest and raise a family – but not anymore. The new socialist democrats went through this state like locusts thru a cornfield and they destroyed everything in their path…nothing left but the memories of what was. We’re a broken state of monumental failures.
You are correct, Jack.
We have concentrated our wealth in too few hands. Hands of people who have NO loayalty to this country. People who con others with with phony patriotic organizations–like Heritage–that get much funding from foreigners.
I believe the breakdown can be prvented. These folks also own >99% of the media in the US.
A revolution takes a concerted effort. Fox News and Heritage are doing their best to dupe a large anough percentage to not only not revolt, but to actually fight against their own best interets as we saw in Wisconsin!
I could not belive the idiots who showed up and rallied for the Koch Brothers!
As long as these idiots roam the planet, change is impossible.
Quentin you continually make outrageous statements with zero information to back it up. Is this what passes for “truth” for you? You asserted the following:
I demand to see the numbers! How many foreign contributors do you know about? What percentage of the Heritage budget comes from these foreigners?
Also this statement shows your Marxist underpinnings:
What wealth are you talking about? How do you propose going about “spreading it around”?
Who are these folks? The foreigners? Or is it the Jews? And what exactly does this imagined monopoly mean to you?
MAKE YOUR CASE!!! How would allowing public workers to continue to extort unsustainable pension and healthcare benefits from taxpayers be in any Wisconsin citizens best interest? How, for that matter, is keeping some of the teachers that have acted in a less than dignified manner, in the best interest of the citizens of Wisconsin? The union has taken what was a privilege, being able to bargain equitably and turned it into an extortion racket and payoff scheme. How is that in the best inbterest of taxpaying citizens and the education of our the children of Wisconsin?
You still have not provided evidence of this absurd charge, have you? No, you haven’t! More truth, Q?
The teachers of Wisconsin have a big chunk of pension money invested in Koch brothers industry. The teachers union has been THE largest funding body in politics in recent years and that reported amount doesn’t include the value of donated political activism. Hypocrite!

I prefer to say, “As long as too many idiots roam the planet change is impossible.” But, your point is taken.
I like the Heritage foundation and I read their articles all the time…I see nothing wrong with them.
