This posting was inspired byToby (LHAO) on the Reagan Lennon connection…woo hoo!
The song, “Taxman” by George Hamilton Harrison was inspired by excessive taxation in Merry Old England…with lyrics Reagan would certainly applaud. (Guitar solo by Paul)
Let me tell you how it will be
There’s one for you, nineteen for me
‘Cause I’m the taxman, yeah, I’m the taxmanShould five per cent appear too small
Be thankful I don’t take it all
‘Cause I’m the taxman, yeah I’m the taxmanIf you drive a car, I’ll tax the street,
If you try to sit, I’ll tax your seat.
If you get too cold I’ll tax the heat,
If you take a walk, I’ll tax your feet.Don’t ask me what I want it for
If you don’t want to pay some more
‘Cause I’m the taxman, yeah, I’m the taxmanNow my advice for those who die
Declare the pennies on your eyes
‘Cause I’m the taxman, yeah, I’m the taxman
And you’re working for no one but me.
And yes Toby, there is evidence that Lennon was fond of Reagan:
In new documentary Beatles Stories, Seaman tells filmmaker Seth Swirsky Lennon wasn’t the peace-loving militant fans thought he was while he was his assistant.
He says, “John, basically, made it very clear that if he were an American he would vote for Reagan because he was really sour on (Democrat) Jimmy Carter.“He’d met Reagan back, I think, in the 70s at some sporting event… Reagan was the guy who had ordered the National Guard, I believe, to go after the young (peace) demonstrators in Berkeley, so I think that John maybe forgot about that… He did express support for Reagan, which shocked me.
“He was a very different person back in 1979 and 80 than he’d been when he wrote Imagine. By 1979 he looked back on that guy and was embarrassed by that guy’s naivete.”
More evidence can be observed in the last stanza from “Revolution” by John Lennon where he reveals admiration for our founding document and perhaps dismay at what some of his lyrics inspired in American leftist youths of the sixties…useful idiots all:
You say you’ll change the constitution
Well you know
We all want to change your head
You tell me it’s the institution
Well you know
You better free your mind instead
But if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao
You ain’t going to make it with anyone anyhow…
The power of the Democrat Party is now in the hands of dope smokin hippie dippy sixties brats. They try to paint more conservative thinkers, Republicans, Independents and moderate Democrats, as radical or extreme. In fact, it is they, the sixties brats (and their fawning following) that are radical and extreme. They never grew up, as Lennon apparently did, and remain in the fog of naivite.
The rest of us are smack dab in the center of freedom loving America!!!
As we celebrate the Fourth let us keep in mind that if John Lennon made it to sanity, “It’s gonna be alright! …Alright …Alright!”
As always I am happy to help. I have never seen the big attraction to the Beatles. I have always thought their music was stupid. I guess I just don’t have that “intellectual curiosity” the dope smoking liberals are always spouting off about. Give me the Stones any day of the week.
I think you mean George Harrison, not George Hamilton.
LOL…old brain strikes again! A right and proper correction has now been made. Thanks for bringing it to my attention, MCS.
Lennon revered our constitution.
Regan shat on it.
Totally disagree, you may not have like Regan’s politics but most of us believe he was a patriot and he did his duty as he saw it.
Alas. Your blind allegiance to Reagan will probably always blind you to the truth. Whether one loves him or hates him, he did not follow the Constitution. That’s the wonderful thing about facts, Jack, one’e political persuasion has no bearing on the truth!
Next, you’ll tell me he was a tax cutter!!!
Quentin your analysis fails to pass your stringent “truth” test. You claim Reagan was not a tax cutter but the “facts” make this statement false:
On August 17, 1981 President Reagan signed the Economic Recovery Act (ERTA) into law. This law cut all income tax rates by twenty-five percent as follows: 5 percent the following October, 10 percent in July 1982, and 10 percent in July 1983. The law also reduced the top income tax rate from 70 percent to 50 percent.
This represents a tax cut no matter how you slice it.
Facts, if we are to appreciate them, must include all instances, even the ones that would make you seem a blithering idiot.
What is this obsession with blackening the name of Ronald Reagan? Omission of fact is the same as an outright lie.
I’m not sure I’m prepared to let you off … at all. George Hamilton for George Harrison? No. Not at all.
And Reagan was a huge tax cutter, but not a huge spending cutter … and that is how we come to be where we are, people.
And I am that pissed with the wealthy. Here we are, all of the rest of us, making such a comfortable place for the wealthy to be wealthy in … and they quite adamantly will not pitch in?
We could, and perhaps we should, be snatching their snotty children off the streets for ransom. So they should reconsider.
Libby, let me off? What are you suggesating here, jail time?
“but not a huge spending cutter
…”
This is another mischaracterization of the entire record…but the real question is why do you care? YOU love big government spending.
“Here we are, all of the rest of us, making such a comfortable place for the wealthy to be wealthy in … and they quite adamantly will not pitch in?
And exactly how are you making a “comfortable place” for the wealthy…or anyone else for that matter?
Pitch in? Good Lord, Libby! The top 1% of wage earners pay 37% of taxes, the next bracket 2-5% pays another 20%. So about 57% is paid by the top 5% of wage earners. To make it even more interesting nearly half 50% PAY NO TAXES.
You seriously need a brain transplant or something…these simple basic facts don’t seem to penetrate.
Tina: “Omission of fact is the same as an outright lie.”
I agree, so why do you keep omitting crucial facts?
You bring up the time Reagan cut taxes, but omit that he raised taxes twice later on in his presidency.
You omit the fact that he ballooned the deficit.
Then you claim that nearly half of Americans “PAY NO TAXES,” which is both an omission of fact and an outright lie. By omitting the words “federal income,” you make it look as if these people aren’t paying any taxes, period, which is of course nonsense. They pay sales tax, they pay taxes at the pump, and many of them pay payroll taxes.
But of course, omitting certain facts makes your narrative play better. That is, as long as your audience is willing to buy it. We’ll see in 2012 if the public is really that gullible.
“The top 1% of wage earners pay 37% of taxes …”
But what if their fair share is considerably higher?
Here are some facts for you … if I can make the calculator work right.
15% of $20,000 ($10 hr) equals $3,000.
15% of $20,000,000 is $3,000,000, if we could get even the 15% out of the beggars (psychologically speaking), which we can’t.
Now then, at the poverty level, the 15% on $14,000 would be $2,100, leaving the impoverished person with $11,900 to live (and I’d like to see you try it).
Do you really think that an enlightened society should require 1,429 poor people to make up the $3M we can’t seem to get out of the rich person?
That doesn’t sound quite decent to me, somehow. Especially when the $3M will hardly impact the beggar’s standard of living.
And, of course, if we could actually get an actual 30% out of the greedy, selfish, and extravagantly profligate beggars, well … !
