President Barack Obama on Thursday launched a reshaping and shrinking of the military. He vowed that the Army and Marine Corps will soon shed about 32,000 troops and this number could go as high as 47,000 before it’s over. Obama is also determined to reduce our arsenal of nuclear weapons and also our drone aircraft that have wreaked havoc on terrorists.
In the next 10 years the Obama administration hopes to cut about $487B in defense spending. The changes won’t come without risk, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said. But he called it acceptable and, because of budget restraints, inevitable. No thought was given to America’s most wasteful and least effective bureaucracy, the Dept. of Homeland Security, thus saving well over $500B almost instantly.
Q. throwing money at a problem is what democrats do more than republicans…but they are both guilty, I admit. I tend to think we are throwing too much money at the military without enough oversight and justification. Too many bases overseas…we shouldn’t be the world’s policeman anymore…it’s a lose lose for us.
I hope this plan to build a smarter leaner military results in a smarter leaner military and not a gutted military which is the usual liberal plan which then requires the next republican to spend heavily on military just to restore readiness.
I just looked at one companies profit margin. 12.5% is not an obscene amount. This is a company that employs 90,000 people.
Government waste and unnecessary bureaucracy, where money is often just tossed down a rat hole, is much more repugnant to me than company profits, some of which will be spent on products and employees going forward. But I also agree that big companies are a lot like government.
EDD just sent me another stack of window envelopes for my deposits…I have hundreds of them from previous mailings…oh well.
