Shall We Ban Police Guns Now?

A woman celebrating the weekend before her 25th birthday was fatally shot Sunday when she hugged an off-duty police officer while dancing at a party, causing the officer’s service weapon to fire, according to police and her mother. Adaisha Miller would have turned 25 on Monday, according to her mother, Yolanda McNair.

The shooting happened at an outdoor social gathering about 12:30 a.m., said police Sgt. Eren Stephens. It happened on the city’s west side.

According to Stephens, the woman “embraced the officer from behind, causing the holstered weapon to accidentally discharge.” The bullet punctured Miller’s lung and hit her heart, and she died at a hospital.

This has set off a firestorm of controversy within the anti-gun community calling into question if police should be carrying firearms: “This is the kind of thing that can happen when cops carry guns, we need to stop these senseless deaths, even one accidental death is one too many!” said Ima Dumas-D. According to Ms. Dumas, in 2010, 387 people were shot dead by police officers and scores more were wounded in so-called justifiable shootings. “That is 387 people who would be alive today if only we could take the guns away from police. They (police) know judo and that’s all they need. At the very least we need to pass a law to prevent such things from happening again!” Said Dumas-D. “We should never miss an opportunity to ban guns” and “The more helpless you are the safer you are from criminals” and “Ordinary people in the presence of guns turn into slaughtering butchers but revert to normal when the weapon is removed” were among the top 40 comments by lawmakers on gun control. Anti-gun community/lobby. Idiots led by idiots.

    News tip:

Oh for crying out loud, this needs fed oversight and tax dollars? A crisis taking over the nation? What a load. Can’t states or local community organizers take care of this? Every day in every way both Democrats and Republicans burn money they do not have and must borrow. Frankly, I am disgusted.

  3. Libby says:

Yeah, well … this sort of oft-repeated lack of prudence, sense and discretion is what loses guys their privileges.

He’s hosting a party in his own house, and gotta wear the gun? … with the safety off, apparently?

  4. Sad little boys says:

He is wearing his gun, cocked? at a party?
They need to have counseling for policemen to deal with their issues of small-penis inadequacy. A little self-esteem would have saved a life.

  5. Soaps says:

Assuming it was a Glock, which is what most police officers carry, there is no safety. The safety is in not pulling the trigger. With a Glock, you also have to have a tight grip on the handle, which is pretty difficult to do if the gun is in any kind of holster. I am skeptical of the “facts” as reported. In most cases, there is no such thing as an accidental discharge. We could survey the Post Scripts readers who know about guns, but I think most would agree with my armchair analysis.

  6. Post Scripts says:

I agree, in fact I am wearing a loaded Glock right now in a shoulder holster. Just a second, let me, uh, let me slip this jacket on…okay, there… I’m calling my girlfriend upstairs now and I’m going to ask her to give me a big hug from the back…let’s see what happens.

(I minute later after 5 tries) Nope, absolutely nothing happened, she’s still alive! Amazing, by golly I think Soaps is right.

I would like to see a ban on stupid cops, but that would whittle the force down to a nub.

  8. Harold Ey says:

Consider the name of the Liberal that is proposing cops can’t protect us or themselves from armed criminals (who will always have access to weapons). fist read the name Ima Dumas, then pronounce the name as it was intended
    ‘I’m a Dumb Ass’

  9. Chris says:

Harold, you do know that “Ima Dumas” is not a real person, right? Jack was attempting satire.

It’s sad that a story like this gets a headline at Post Scripts, while the police brutality in Joe Arpaio’s department, which led to the death of an unarmed, mentally ill prisoner, doesn’t merit a mention.

  10. Toby says:

Did we hear anything from Ms.Dumass about Fast & Furious?

  11. Post Scripts says:

Chris, what are you talking about? You mentioned it several times here. Yet, nobody was every charged with a crime, just inuendo, guilt by suspicion. That’s what is sad.

  12. Post Scripts says:

Toby: No, but I’m confident if it was a way to get more gun restrictions her and all the other Dumas’s would be for it. -Jack

  13. Chris says:

A videotape is not “innuendo” or “suspicion,” Jack. Have you watched it yet? I’ll post it again:

  14. Post Scripts says:

Chris gee I am glad you were able to reach a verdict. I congratulate you on your medical expertise and clairvoyance. You should apply for a job at the coroners office in Maricopa County, they could use a guy like you. Their own medical expert was unable to say it was murder and listed the death as “undetermined.” I quote from a recent report:

“However, the examiner declined to say whether it was an accident or a homicide, instead marking the manner of death as undetermined.

The report also showed that Atencio, 44, was in pretty poor health on the night of the arrest, with heart problems, high blood pressure and a long history of psychological issues, including schizophrenia and depression.

He also had a history of alcohol and methamphetamine abuse, though a separate toxicology report showed he was sober the night of his arrest with only traces of antidepressants and Tylenol in his blood and urine.”

    Hmmm… lets see:

    1. Subject was in poor health prior to his arrest for assaulting someone.
    2. Oh, so he was combative before police arrived and he continued to be combative while in custody. Gee, that’s so unusual, image a combative person also being combative with the cops who arrest him?
    3. There was no evidence to show that officers acted inappropriately when they took Atencio to the ground. Having multiple officers hold a persons arms and legs are legitimate ways to prevent injury to themselves and the subject.
    4. Atencio had heart problems and high blood pressure and he died of cardiac arrest, but this was in your opinion murder?

Chris, the jailers didn’t cause his medical problems, they sure didn’t cause him to abuse methamphetamine and everyone knows that stuff will kill you! He already had acute psychosis, they didn’t cause that either, which is why they used a number of deputies to control him and why they put him in a rubber room.

These things rarely happen to crazy people in custody, even in Maricopa County death in custody is extremely unusual. So don’t be so quick to shout, “Murder!’ just because you watched a U-tube video.

By the way… that video was freely released by Sheriff Joe Arpio because he said his department had nothing to hide.

As of this date and after an extensive investigation there still is no finding of blame …except by you.

‘Harold, you do know that “Ima Dumas” is not a real person, right? Jack was attempting satire’.

You know Chris I am not sure, hummm I better switch back to caffeine in the morning, so many Obama kool aid ads on TV has just lulled me senseless. I guess my attempt at humor is not on par with Jacks, because after reading a couple of posts prior to mine I thought maybe they needed a hint. You would assume by how they replied was a indication that they did not understand anything about the post at all and just wanted to Lib off, (am I getting better?). And actually I think Jack was using sarcasm not satire, he got that from our mutual friend Wendy Shoofitz
