A couple of friends have indicated I should post more about local issues. Very good point (and thanks to both of you). Here’s a local issue post:
The Noise Ordinance. Where is logical thinking on our City Council? Our police officiers (Chico PD) are highly trained men and women. They use descretion all day long. Give a speeding ticket, don’t give a speeding ticket. Engage in a high speed chase or abort for public safety reasons. Use the baton, the taser, or the handgun. Etc., etc.
Do we really think they can’t decide when people deserve to be ticketed (immediately) when violating noise ordinances? Of course they can. Give them the tool.
As for the people against a stronger ordinance, their arguments weren’t very good. Almost to a person they claimed it was only a few people causing the problem. Ok then, the problem people will be ticketed and everyone else will carry on as normal.
What about the new kid to Chico State who has a raging party and doesn’t realize the rules. Two comments:
a) New students go through student orientation and are told
b) New students are seldom 21 and shouldn’t be throwing any kind of party that potentially gets out of hand
Finally, if we want Chico to be a safe place to raise a family, and a premier place to live: Out of control parties need to be shut down. I went to Chico State, I get it. Students will party. Out of control, noise violating, drunk students in the street parties, however, are good for no one. Why not? Fights break out, people get raped, our town becomes a little less safe. If you doubt it, talk to a police officier. They live here too…..

When the students get out of control they should be given one warning and one only, if they repeat their actions they should be expelled for the semester.
We cater to these folks too much, the PC stuff is not helping.
I went to a summer session at Chico State, I was at a party that got a little loud, the policeman came to the door asked we turn it down the owner of the apt said yes, and apologized. end of story.
As a Chico taxpayer, I’m tired of paying for the Chico Police responding to student parties, when I want them protecting my home. Campus Police should respond to student noise and parties. The University needs to take responsibility for their problem student.
I completed my teaching credential at Chico State and I’ve seen the wild parties and the aftermath as a police officer..so I know the problem.
Sean, you said exactly what people need to hear. The police were hired in part for their judgment and intelligence. The exercise good judgement every day.
I wish I could say the same for all of our City Council, maybe after Nov. I can!
You can be assured that the liberal council members will not do ANYTHING about a new noise ordinance until AFTER the election. It’s all about politics and not wanting to tick off their college votes. They would rather our full time citizens be annoyed and have their rights violated than to risk upsetting part of their voting base. Too bad they can’t grow a pair and do what is right instead of thinking about their political future.
