Update: 9/11/2012 – Man killed by Chico police after standoff had pipe bomb in apartment bedroom.
Here we go again, more violence in the headlines. Wow…seems our nice little town is being overpopulated with dirtbags and druggies! Once this happens it’s almost impossible to go back to what once was. The picture at the left was taken in LA, but I thought the name of this gang was sort of ironic…”Chicos Locos.”
The brutal truth is, for years we’ve reached out with our kindness, our compassion and our generosity to one too many loser and now we’re overrun. Another fine example that no good deed ever goes unpunished. Many of these criminals are in some way being subsidizing by the taxpayers to live here, isn’t that pathetic? Most recently we’re a dumping place for convicts due to prison overcrowding.
So get used to the headlines like we’ve seen in the past couple of days. “College Student Attacked Twice in 2 Days” – that ought to be good for enrollment. Or this story…”Suspects threaten to kill victims, their child. One man allegedly held a gun to a victim’s head early Monday morning at a south Chico bar, while another man and woman threatened to kill the victims and their child…holy #@$%? Police arrested, Filiberto Vasquez, Eric Esparza, Selina McDermott and Christina Vasquez in the case, according to a Chico Police Department press release.
Or this doozy… A naive, but well intentioned man sought to help a woman (allegedly) high on methamphetamine in a parking lot. He left his truck running as he approached her, then she sprints right past the guy, jumps in his truck, tries to take off and in the process of stealing his ride she smashes him against a tree. The woman, Mayra Morales, was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, driving under the influence causing injuries, hit and run causing injuries, and grand theft auto, police reported.
And last week it was car-jackings, armed robberies and home invasions! Well, at least our City Council got tough on one public enemy…they banned plastic bags.
Jack, your attempt to awaken people is meaningful to those who care about the future of the City of Chico. The need to awaken people in Chico prior to this November has never been more critical. Plastic bags might be the perfect icon for the Liberals running for office, It is time to recycle their “empty seat”. Chico was a wonderful city in the past, with a nice balance of caring hard working citizens, and the spark of youth created through the University. Then political Liberalism took advantage of a voting base, and as a result of many majority Liberal Councils we have the mess you report in this blog. We need to rekindle both the past balance of humanity, and bring budget basics back to the fore front. This has to happen before Chico and it’s citizens once more can become a safe community. Any elected person needs put the basic requirements of citizens first, before their personal ideals like the privileged plastic bag ban you identified.
Thanks Harold, we do have a challenge ahead of us! Yes, we do.
This is probably a symptom of nation wide problem more than it is a Chico problem. The US population is having problems. I see it as sliding towards a whole host of bad things like poor work ethics, entitlements, low expectations, prison culture, the me generation, the gimme generation, sure are a lot of people living among us that don’t rise to the standards set by our grandparents.
Civilization has its ups and downs and I would have to conclude base on what I see around me every day that we are truly on the wrong side, the downside.
What attracts these people to our community? Are they gang members or associated with drug dealing? Is it the section eight housing? What percentage, if any, is part of the student body at Butte or Chico State? Are federal Pell Grant recipients involved in any of this? If any of these are contributing factors I would think the city has little control to stop it.
Volunteers keep the graffiti in check.
What tools, beyond a larger police force (presence on the street; mop up the mess) does the city have at it’s disposal?
The commentary on the mindset of the “gimmies” is why I fear Obama may be reelected.
Tina, you ask a really good question that deserves a really good answer, and I wish I could give it to you. I’m not sure anyone can because it’s so convoluted and complex.
Part of the problem is the bad economy. Part is the way liberals in schools teach students. Part of this problem is the lack of values in society, formerly instilled by one’s church…which ties in to my comment about liberal teachers.
Part of our problem is a trend towards the prison culture. Why in the heck would kids want to dress and look like hardcore convicts?
Part is the way government manages welfare, or rather mismanages welfare, and then makes it way too easy to stay on it for generations.
Part is our own affluence, making one part of society soft and lazy, while another part becomes hard and ruthless.
Part is the way we manage our prisons and we can thank the lawyers, the prisoner unions and even the ACLU for that. These forces give rights to criminals before trial and then rights to prisoners after trial. Then they tie up the legal system and force standards on prisons never before encountered anywhere. It takes about a year or two to bring a person to court these days on a serious charge, and justice delayed is never justice.
There is also this pop culture that seems to embrace drugs and violence. They are also responsible for the glorification of gang life, prison life and the portraying of cops as bad guys. They portray the poor and minorities as victims of the rich old whites. And they sow their hate all in the name of a cultural revolution. Even sports stars play up this bad guy role, packing heat and doing drugs. And drugs…that’s a whole culture unto itself that involves all kinds of people with serious mental problems who frequently get into trouble and pass along their dysfunctional behavior to the next generation.
Then there is illegal immigration and the underground movement it has spawned, that is not so underground anymore…in fact its right out in the open! The movement for Hispanic dominance is rampant among Hispanic teachers that espouse open borders, and they sell the message about the rich taking advantage of the poor minorities and the victimization of Mexico by the USA, about stealing California, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas and Arizona and how they (Hispanics) are owed something by whites. But, it’s not just the teachers, they are but the tip of the iceberg.
And then we have the Blacks and some of their beliefs about racism, oppression and they too buy into the hate rhetoric from the left and they often times think they are owed something. Probably half of America thinks crazy stuff, be they Indians, Blacks, Hispanics, native Hawaiians, Puerto Ricans, you name it…way too many of them feel totally victimized, resentful, hateful and worse…they feel they are owed something. And guess what? They are all very over represented in the prison systems… victims of poverty, right? Yep, all victims of rich old white people who had slaves in 1776.
I doubt there is anyone right now who can give a definitive answer why so many minority Americans commit a disproportionate amount of crime, nor can they account for the new wave of a young generation of trashy people that move from town to town only to live off charity and do nothing with their lives, except get into trouble and do drugs when available.
So many angles and it involves all races at some point, so it’s not just a demographics thing…although unchecked illegal immigration does play a role. Along with the good, we’ve absorbed much of the trash that couldn’t make it in Mexico and they brought all their bad habits with them. But, I don’t want anyone to think this is about minorities or illegals, far from it, I’ve noted a whole host of problems, generational problems, rooted in our welfare system, our school system, a shift away from the church, a shift in cultural values, a change in economics, even language barriers play a role. The whole criminal justice system needs an overhaul as much as welfare and schools.
I’m just a simple guy, but I know what I am seeing. I do read a lot about these things. I do know the stats and that is very telling about where we are headed. I talk with a lot very smart people and yet I can’t give you a very clear answer to why we are in so much trouble. I can only tell you that I believe we are in serious trouble… as in… a society that is lost it’s core values and is having trouble telling right from wrong.
My 80 year old next door neighbors grand-daughter has just moved in with them because she no longer feels safe in the apt. shed lived in by Chico State, while she was a student.
The crime had gotten so bad the apt. building owners hired security guards to patrol at night and to escort the tenants to and from their cars. Even with this added security she didnt feel safe.
Pepper spray has not been outlawed yet, so I would suggest that anyone who wants some personal security invest in a can or two and keep it handy around the house. The only problem is, if the bad guy has a gun, you may not have a chance to use your pepper spray.
Hey Jack, I’ve heard a can of wasp spray is good to use too because of its long distant spray.
True of false?
Peggy, I have not heard of that one before.
Peggy,I do not know how legal it is, but YES as a defense spray you can direct and hit a target well before they become more of a threat, or a pest.
