State Department: More Environmental Damage Without the XL Pipeline

Posted by Tina

Barbara Hollingsworth of CNS News reports that the State Department has concluded not building the Keystone XL Pipeline could result in “42 percent more greenhouse gases” being released:

Not building the pipeline “is unlikely to significantly impact the rate of extraction in the [Canadian] oil sands or the continued demand for heavy crude oil at refineries in the United States,” the department noted in a long-awaited environmental report released January 31st.

But the “No Build” option is likely to result in an increased number of oil spills, six more deaths annually, and up to 42 percent higher greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the State Department concluded.

Time to build…will we have to wait to announce just prior to the election?

If we told the Koch Brothers and Canada to transport their tar sands across Canada since they are in route to China anyway and just worried about US oil from US companies we would be better off.

The report is a sham. That is a low grade tar sand that belongs to Trans Canada and will be processed in Houston for export. The number of permanent jobs is around 30. So why are we patsy’s for the Koch’s and Canada who told the Koch brothers no to a pipeline? USA gets nothing out of the deal. GOP and some Dems in Congress voted no to even demand soe of that oil stay here.

How many pipeline leaks have there been from noral crude not sandpaper crude and the destruction?

LOL name 1 benefit long term for the USA besides the Koch’s doubling their wealth?

I will laugh if ya think that is our oil!

All oil is sold on the world market by treaty,

Tea Party is anti American interest and all for wall street ownership and a fascist society.

I have toured the Keystone pipelines and they are leaking timebombs. Let’s worry about USA not Canadian/Koch Profits

How about learning about stuff instead of repeating bought out media?

Dewey what you have posted is not an “official” site and doesn’t represent original documentation for claims made. How about you practice what you preach!

The radical green movement is wildly exaggerating the damage done by spills which are infrequent considering the amount of oil that is brought out of the ground, refined and distributed. Yes a lot of money is made but the profit margin to the oil companies is small compared to the huge chunk that the government takes in taxes…there’s your robber baron! Except for government intrusion and political strife or natural disasters that raise the prices we have enjoyed the benefits from this fuel source for decades at very reasonable rates and employed a lot of people in the process. Those who have taken big risks and invested money to deliver this product deserve to make money in the process. Unlike radical activists the oil companies take responsibility for the spills and the clean up. Activists produce nothing but hot air. They are not conservationists; they are bullies and trouble makers.

    Tax Foundation:

According to data compiled by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration, the domestic profits of the 25 largest oil companies in the U.S. have been highly volatile since the late 1970s.

As illustrated in Figure 1, between 1977 and 1985, the oil industry recorded relatively high profits—averaging nearly $33 billion per year, after adjusting for inflation. These good times were followed by ten years of relatively flat profits, averaging just $12.3 billion per year. In 1996, profits began to rise again but have been anything but stable, ranging from $9 billion to nearly $42 billion per year. Between 1977 and 2004, the industry’s domestic profits totaled $643 billion, after adjusting for inflation.

Figure 1. State and Federal Taxes on Gasoline Production and Imports Exceed Oil Industry Profits in Most Years

In contrast, federal and state taxes on gasoline production and imports have been climbing steadily since the late 1970s and now total roughly $58.4 billion. Due in part to substantial hikes in the federal gasoline excise tax in 1983, 1990, and 1993, annual tax revenues have continued to grow. Since 1977, governments collected more than $1.34 trillion, after adjusting for inflation, in gasoline tax revenues—more than twice the amount of domestic profits earned by major U.S. oil companies during the same period.

You might even call this taking of private money fascist!

    “Wall Street ownership”…you’re kidding right?

Wall Street is a place, a street, on which the stock exchange is located. This is a place where stocks are bought and sold to the public and to brokers representing the interests of their clients. These clients include the retirement accounts of private investors and groups…teachers and other unions too!

    Fascism:

A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.

A political philosophy or movement based on or advocating such a system of government.

    Oppressive, dictatorial control.

This describes the current administration’s direction and philosophy. It does not describe the Tea party in any way shape or form!

    You sir are confused.

Chico Tea Party Patriots: Constitutionally Limited Government * Fiscal Responsibility * Free Markets:

The goals of Chico Tea Party Patriots are:

to make our voices heard through rallies, contact with elected officials, and media.

to educate the public on the important issues of the day, focusing on solutions based on our core values.

to act as a watchdog, to ensure that our elected officials are held accountable for their votes.

to effect change through the legislative process by identifying and supporting candidates and legislation that are consistent with our core values.

If you believe in these core values and goals, then you maybe a Tea Party Patriot!

And I say if you don’t believe in those values and goals you could be a Marxist, fascist, socialist, or communist.
