As Americans do battle over immigration law prior to the coming elections one of the things we should keep in mind is the number of people who lose their lives every year as they attempt to enter our country illegally. The loss in human life is described by some as a “”very serious human rights crisis on the border.”
The easiest thing America could do to prevent some of the tragedy and waste of human life is to send a clear message that America is serious about controlling entry into our country and will severely prosecute traffickers. Doing the opposite, which is to consider the border open and to encourage illegal entry through enticements, sanctuary cities, and looking the other way is grossly irresponsible, unthinking and cruel…it is costing desperate people their lives.
The L.A. Times reports about an organization that is expanding and improving on the mission to account for those who die in the desert:
Since 2006, the group has made 100 matches in collaboration with the Pima County Medical Examiner’s office.
Colibri, headed by executive director Robin Reineke, still helps people find their loved ones and track information on the dead and missing, but now also aims to educate people on the high number of deaths and disappearances along the southern border through research and storytelling.
According to the article 2000 people have been reported as missing; who knows how many more go unreported or are never found. In Arizona alone 900 remains have yet to be identified.
Tight immigration law is important and should be designed to serve both the United States and the people who wish to come here. Irresponsibly enticing people to break the law and risk their lives is a sad legacy of politics for selfish interests…politician who seek votes, well meaning citizens trying to assuage personal guilt about their own good fortune, and citizens with sympathies but no real understanding of the full consequences of their misdirected caring. There are higher principles and methods that must be embraced so that thousands seeking freedom and opportunity will have a better choice and a better chance.
In Mexico life is cheap. Cheaper than dirt. The corrupt, criminal drug-lord culture dependent, and depraved Mexican ruling class cares so little for its citizens that it encourages them to flee and die in the desert.
Exacerbating this painful and vile environment is the Obama administration colluding with the decadent Mexican government run by a cruel and callous oligarchic elite.
Life is cheap in Mexico. Sadly, America seems to be slouching in the same direction giving the good people of both countries a more difficult road to hoe.
This is one aspect of the immigration issue that I hadn’t considered, at least not in this way.
You mean difficult “row to hoe”. “A hard row to hoe” is the original idiom, with “hard” being replaced by “tough” in the more modern vernacular. No one hoes a road. Maybe a road bank, but not a road. 😉
Tina, I just realized “The African Queen” is on TV. Another DVD I must get. Signing out.
LOL, Pie…keep me straight. I get a bit old brained at times…I’ve been using roll for role lately too.
Enjoy your movie! Just has dinner so I’ll be doing dishes.
