The Black Community Needs to Do Some Introspection Before Blaming the Cops

by Jack Lee

A 2007 special report released by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, reveals that approximately 8,000 — and, in certain years, as many as 9,000 African Americans are murdered annually in the United States. This chilling figure is accompanied by another equally sobering fact, that 93% of these murders are in fact perpetrated by other blacks. The analysis, supported by FBI records, finds that in 2005 alone, for example, African Americans accounted for 49% of all homicide victims in the US — again, almost exclusively at the hands of other African Americans!

•Black males were more vulnerable to violent victimization than black females.
•Younger blacks were generally more likely than older blacks to be victims of violence.
•Blacks who had never married were more likely than all other blacks to be victims of violence.
•Blacks in households with lower annual incomes were at a greater risk of violence than those in households with higher annual incomes.
•Blacks living in urban areas were more likely than those in suburban or rural areas to be victims of violence.
•Black victims of homicide were most likely to be male (85%) and between ages 17 and 29 (51%).
•Homicides against blacks were more likely than those against whites to occur in highly populated areas, including cities and suburbs.
•About 53% of homicides against blacks in 2005 took place in areas with populations of at least 250,000 people, compared to about 33% of homicides of white victims.
•Blacks were killed with a firearm in about 77% of homicides against them.
•In CA black inmates represent 2992 per 100,000 of the jail population compared to 460 whites per 100,000.
African-Americans represent 7.2% of the CA population, but 27% of the prison population.
•In Ferguson, Missouri it’s said that 75% of traffic stops are on black motorists, which sounds terrible until you discover this is in a reasonable proportion to the racial demographics and crime stats.
•Crime in Ferguson has been exponentially increasing in proportion to the sharp increase in the black population since 1970 when it was less than 25%.

In New York City in just the first half of 2013 70% of all shooting suspects were black. That is roughly three times the percentage of blacks living in the NYC. Similar stats can be found in most large American cities. The next time some moron says cops are killing black males at a rate 3X that of the national average for other races you can respond with the facts that show violence is a black community problem for whatever the reasons, be it drugs, poverty, broken homes, etc. They are still overrepresented in the criminal justice system for reasons that have nothing to do with police officers doing their job. Blacks are overrepresented in homicide and felonious crime statistics for reasons other than racial profiling.

The fact that three times or more the number of black males wind-up being shot by cops compared to other races is a reflection of an endemic social problem within the black community, not the police community. This is called cause and effect, it’s action and reaction. The opportunity to lower these appalling statistics is squarely within the black community.

Nobody here is saying there’s not room for improvement within law enforcement, there’s always room. They make mistakes, and sometimes on rare occasions an officer may violate department policy or even the law. That needs to be addressed too. I’m only saying that on the whole law enforcement does not have an endemic racist problem or a trigger happy mentality that warrants AG Eric Holder to investigate every police shooting of a black offender, armed or not, by a white officer.

I fail to see why the facts of this case are ignored…

Instead a constant dialog by those who claim not to be racist.

Well good to know justice is served in the media by Fox news. Let’s just transfer all cases to them.

How many days now and no official Police report just friends speaking for Wilson? 17or so?

Not any mention yet by Fox Wilson came to Ferguson PD after being in a police force that was completely disbanded because of racism?

Or how about Dan page speech that aired?

What about the white kid that just got killed in Kansas? He was white but may have been suicidal.

What about the militarized response? Police do not need to dress like military and point guns at innocent peaceful people.

Or how about the fact they rolled out to Browns neighborhood blocked the street and pointed guns at kids playing?

To sit in a small town and armchair quarterback is not reporting news nor responsible.

You have your opinion that is fine .. But the fact remains Wilson will get off and it will become a civil rights case.

The way the cops respond is not OK. A retired police officer has not a clue of these other police outfits in known Klan territory.

So Black people … they are a problem in general is that the message?

Jack the Brown incident is a local matter. Eric Holder had no business inserting himself in the process or suggesting a racial motive. He should remain neutral and silent until all of the evidence was collected and examined and a racial motive was indicated by the evidence. At that point it would be appropriate to investigate and prosecute if necessary. His activism is unseemly and potentially poisoned the jury pool if the case even comes to trial.

His conduct and the conduct of race baiters, activists, and lawyers for the Brown family have all ginned up racial tensions and created false impressions and narratives. The hype is immoral IMHO and does nothing to actually help the black cause or ensure that justice is served.

This case was used politically. It follows a well worn activist pattern prior to elections. Democrats needed an issue to fire up black voters and found and exploited it in Ferguson.

I’m not sure the American people are buying it anymore. PEW:

69% of the public, including majorities of both whites (75%) and blacks (64%), say blacks and whites in this country get along “very well” or “pretty well.” Since 2009, the share of blacks with a positive view of relations between the races has fallen 12 points (from 76% to 64%) while remaining largely unchanged among whites (80% in 2009).

Confidence in police is unchanged since 2009. Police officers are a bit like IRS agents so its understanable that people are skeptical.

…Currently, 39% say they have a great deal of confidence in police officers locally to do a good job enforcing the law; 36% say they have a fair amount of confidence. Majorities also have at least a fair amount of confidence in police officers in their communities to not use excessive force on suspects (31% great deal/33% fair amount) and to treat blacks and whites equally (30% great deal/32% fair amount).

64% is not bad for an organization you meet only when you’ve done something wrong or need help. Both situations are emotional and can be life changing.

What we ask them to face on a daily basis is enough to give them the benefit of the doubt…at least until the evidence is in for heaven’s sake!

    Another poll:

Views of the police reaction to protests in Ferguson, Mo. have become more favorable since last week, but views on the subject have become even more racially polarized

Rallies and vigils are planned around the country for this weekend and Monday to mark the funeral of Michael Brown, the Missouri teenager who was shot to death on August 10 by a police officer. His death sparked weeks of unrest in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, centering on accusations of racial discrimination by the almost totally white police force against a majority black population. The police department’s reaction to the protests – which have led to looting in some cases – has also been criticized for being too heavy-handed.

YouGov’s previous polling on the subject revealed a national public divided on the police response but less sympathetic to the reaction of Ferguson residents to the shooting. The latest polling finds that public opinion has hardened further against the residents, and softened slightly when it comes to the police.

56% of Americans now say people in Ferguson have reacted in an “unreasonable” way, up from 45% the week before. However, the number who say the residents have been reasonable has increased too, albeit by an insignificant amount, from 25% to 27%.

The reverse (to a lesser extent) has taken place when it comes to views about the police reaction to the protests in Ferguson. Whereas last week the public was evenly divided between those who said the police have reacted reasonably (32%) and those who said the police have reacted unreasonably (33%), now the public tends to say the police reaction has been reasonable by 40-33%.

Maybe some need to review this instructional video, it might help?

  5. Tina says:

Harold Chris Rock nails it. Great find! And good for him…his advice would save lives…it would also give young black men a shot at a good life if they took it to heart generally.

Interesting his advice is the same as the white cops that Chris went apoplectic over.

  6. Dewey says:

Tina the DOJ was requested by the family. maybe you should have watched the videos

All I want to know is when the DOJ files the civil rights case and the evidence is shown will you correct your stories?

The cop did not even fill out his story on the inncident sheet Tina. Why? To build a case on evidence. The cop came from a force that was disbanded for rascism….

yet you try the case on this blog using media

Like I said the cop will not be prosecuted there is a tight network there. Why even the fund raiser for Wilson abt 60 miles away was taken off the police blog… LOL Oh BTW it was hosted by the Klan

really have to turn off Fox entertainment. they did win their case saying they were not news they are entertainment

  7. Tina says:

Dewey: “Tina the DOJ was requested by the family.”

Since when does the DOJ ask, “How high,” when a citizen says jump?

“maybe you should have watched the videos”

What video’s and have they been tagged as evidence?

“The cop did not even fill out his story on the inncident sheet Tina. Why?”

Evidence of this comes from what source? If true…maybe he couldn’t see. He was taken to the hospital.

“The cop came from a force that was disbanded for rascism ”

    Evidence and source, please.

He has a perfect record in his current position…no complaints lodged against him.

“yet you try the case on this blog using media”

Excuse me Bud…you are the one making a negative case against the cop on this blog.

This discussion is about personal behavior…anyones personal behavior!

You are making a number of specious charges here Dewey and you need to stop before it gets you thrown off the blog…again!

  8. Harold says:

I read in a prior post and thought Dewey was through with participating in Post Scripts, I guess that’s as meaningful as all of his other comments he posted.

  9. Tina says:

I read that too. I guess he just can’t resist our magnetic charm? 😉

  10. Tina says:

Excellent commentary by Dr. Ben Carson. The following excerpt is appropriate to our discussion:

Regardless of one’s position on the political spectrum, we can all agree that this was a horrible tragedy and needless discarding of a precious life. How could this have been avoided? Two obvious answers: The officer could have simply ignored his duty and backed off when it became apparent that his instructions would not be followed, thereby avoiding a confrontation, or Mr. Brown could have complied with the officer’s instructions, according to his civic duties.

If police officers generally adopted the first solution, chaos would reign supreme in all of our streets. If the populace generally adopted the second solution, there would be even fewer incidents of police violence. Last year, 100 black males were killed by police in the United States. In the same year, 5,000 blacks were killed by other blacks, the vast majority being males. Could it be that we are erroneously being manipulated into making this incident into a racial issue when, in fact, it is a component of a much larger social issue?

Why are there so many young black men in the streets of America with defiant attitudes that frequently lead to incarceration or death? Could it be that a large number of them grow up without a father figure to teach them how to relate to authority and teach them the meaning of personal responsibility? This is not to say that mothers cannot convey these important social lessons, as mine did. But in too many cases, these young, unwed mothers have never themselves been exposed to personal responsibility and self-esteem, and the vicious cycle continues. As a society, we must concentrate on ways to break this tragic cycle, which is producing a higher poverty rate in black communities across America over the past five years with the attendant increasing frustration that can easily produce potentially explosive, tinderbox situations, as we have seen in Ferguson.

Dr. Carson speaks the truth from his heart. I hope our readers will follow the link and breathe in all of it.
