California loses out on 6500 jobs with Tesla Motors’ decision to build its new $5 billion “gigafactory” in Reno, Nevada, a state where government is more friendly. Construction jobs are a bonus in the deal to build a plant that will produce cheaper batteries for what Musk hopes will then make possible his dream of an affordable electric car:
“This is a critical step in Elon Musk’s long-term goal of creating a viable, high-volume electric car,” Kelly Blue Book senior analyst Karl Brauer said in an email. “The battery pack makes up a sizable portion of any electric car’s total price, but if Tesla can reduce the cost of this component with its own factory it has a real shot at producing a $30,000 electric car with a 200-plus-mile range.”
In Reno’s favor are its proximity to Tesla’s assembly plant in Fremont, California, and its sunny climate — “supporting Musk’s desire to incorporate solar energy into the plant’s manufacturing process,” Brauer added.
Also noted is the Reno sites “four-hour proximity to Silver Peak, Nevada, home of North America’s only commercially active lithium mine.”
Texas and Arizona were also in the running.
To me Nevada is a win. They need several acres near a rail line. Also it is going to be a green factory with solar power ect. They mine some lithium in Nevada and also there is a new mine in a northern state that will supply all we need. That would be a win.
So you see location is everything. Reno is perfect acres by a rail line and easy transportation to factory in CA and elsewhere.
So I hope it is Reno and not Texas where R Perry was driving a Tesla around Sacramento on his trip to steal Californian jobs.
Creating new good paying jobs is honorable not stealing existing jobs like China giving them deals that can not sustain.
I have been watching them for awhile and that would seem to be a great solution
California was never in the running so we did not loose out on jobs. Also next remember it is a Green Factory! So the usual let them destroy anything they need for jobs will not work here.
Of course they went to Reno. What company that wants to succeed would come to Calif.?
Tesla is also working on developing batteries for home solar systems for when the power goes out or to go off of the grid completely homes will still have electricity.
This is why I went with the solar company for my home. They’re working with Tesla to develop the battery for home systems.
Peggy we found a good source for lithium in Wyoming.
The factory needed to be on many acres near rail to where it also made sense to transport this lithium from Wyoming.

The decisions for where to build the mega battery factory was an example of partnerships formed at Clean Energy Summit per Harry Reid.
Green Energy is the enemy of Koch and other fossil fuel barons.
The Tea Party is against Green energy and also the Koch summit that was just held at Dana Point came out with a goal of attacking green energy and trying to pass laws and do things to raise the cot of Solar power and panels.
http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php/Koch_Network
So you are supporting the Party that is against Tesla and solar power. Can not have it both ways you know.

Also if you do not like california please move.
This post should be titled good “no green energy jobs in California” to be a tea party party alliance.
Ivhope it is Reno it is good for Nevada and california and is a perfect transfer spot from Wyoming.
Hint: buy Panasonic stock
California made an effort to get this plant built here:
But the message fro Tesla was loud and clear: “California will have to meet the same criteria as other locations in terms of speed to implementation. Speed is of the essence.”
Regulatory compliance is a nightmare in California and the tax situation compared to Nevada is a no-brainer….
California has a high corp tax rate (8.84%) on S corporations…Nevada 0.00%. State tax California 12.3% for high earners…Nevada 0.00%…Sales tax in Calif varies up to 7.5% to 10.0%…Nevada 0.00%. Even workers comp for manufacturing in Nevada is 2% as opposed to 6% in California.
Regulatory compliance places California at The worst state for business by 650 CEO’s in a poll.
The headline is accurate. Tesla has a factory in Fremont. IF California were not such an anti-business state those jobs would have been California jobs hands down. The thousands of businesses that have left California in the past 10 to 15 years would also still be in California.
California is just STUPID!
Earth to Dewey, Tesla’s auto plant is in FREMONT, CALIFORNIA!!!
If you’d get your head out of the clouds looking for ways to attack the Koch bros. you’d see your party’s buddy Harry Reid and his son will make more off of this deal than the Koch bros. would have on a similar deal.
Your party needs to change it’s mascot from a Jackass to a vulture.
Tesla to Choose Nevada for Battery Factory:
“State Likely Offered Large Incentives to Lure $5 Billion Plant.”
“By choosing Nevada, Tesla would get a site close to its Fremont, Calif., assembly plant and ready access to lithium, a key raw material for the batteries. The maker of a $71,000 and up electric sedan has said it plans to employ up to 6,500 workers and to produce 35 gigawatt hours of battery cells annually in its so-called gigafactory. The plant eventually is expected to produce more than all of the current lithium-ion battery production in the world today.
“I think the single most important factor is the [site’s] low-cost green power,” said John Boyd, principal of The Boyd Company, a site selection firm that had forecast Nevada as the likely winner. Reno offers Tesla choices among solar, wind and geothermal energy for the plant. He also said Nevada’s lack of corporate and personal income taxes aided its selection.”

YOU can’t have it both ways. If your going to attack Koch you need to hold Reid accountable for his actions too. You don’t want to look like a hypocrite now do you? There are lots of articles about Reid and his son’s connection to the China solar company, so I’ll let you look them up if you really want to be informed and not just a progressive water boy.
Federal loan guarantee gives northern Nevada waste-to-fuel plant boost toward construction:
“The developer of a northern Nevada biofuel production plant declared his project ready for construction, after receiving a federal loan guarantee for about half the cost.
Fulcrum BioEnergy chief E. James Macias said during the start of Thursday’s annual National Clean Energy Summit that the Sierra BioFuels Plant in Storey County will cost $200 million and take two years to build.
Macias says construction will start this year in the same McCarran, Nevada, industrial park that will host a $5 billion factory for carmaker Tesla to produce batteries.
Federal Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack joined Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Macias in announcing the $105 million loan guarantee.
The plant will convert 200,000 tons of trash per year from the Lockwood Regional Landfill in Sparks into diesel, maritime and jet fuel.”

Dewey: “Peggy we found a good source for lithium…”
Who is “we” in that sentence?
“The decisions for where to build the mega battery factory was an example of partnerships formed at Clean Energy Summit per Harry Reid.”
Hypocrite! This is an example of corporatism in action, the very thing you are supposedly against.
You should have told us it’s okay for big green to run our government if that’s what you had in mind.
Elon Musk, born in South Africa, is a “Canadian-American, engineer, entrepreneur, business owner with a net worth well in excess of $5 billion.
Please explain why this billionaire should need loans from taxpayers or “partner” with Harry Reid?
Please explain, given your non-corporatist position why green companies like Tesla should be offered waivors for environmental regulations that other companies must follow by the green lefties running California?
Don’t bother with the questions…they were rhetorical! I can tell you myself. You green jerks want government to pick winners and losers to advantage the green energy field.
You don’t stand on environmental principles or principles of neutral government but on the principle of special interest favor (And disfavor).
You bend the rules to suit yourselves and collude with government officials to create advantage for your interests and against your competition.
So typical of socialist minds. They refuse to compete for the dollars and support of the people directly.
They prefer to put tax dollars at risk to finance their businesses.
They prefer government regulations to force ideas on the people.
They prefer the big Jack boot of government!
Dewey you are a big green fascist corporatist! Admit it!
You misrepresented yourself here in order to slam the Koch brothers and have now stumbled and exposed yourself as a total hypocrite.
Peggy: “Your party needs to change it’s mascot from a Jackass to a vulture.
I love it!
And that vulture dons a Santa suit at election time.
Re: #8 Tina “And that vulture dons a Santa suit at election time.”
Heh.
Subject: Election time,.. heaven or hell HEAVEN OR HELL?
While walking down the street one day a Corrupt Senator was tragically hit by a car and died.
His soul arrives in heaven and is met by St. Peter at the entrance.
“Welcome to heaven,” says St. Peter. “Before you settle in, it seems there is a problem. We seldom see a high official around these parts, you see, so we’re not sure what to do with you.”
“No problem, just let me in,” says the Senator.
“Well, I’d like to, but I have orders from the higher ups. What we’ll do is have you spend one day in hell and one in heaven. Then you can choose where to spend
eternity.”
“Really?, I’ve made up my mind. I want to be in heaven,” says the Senator.
“I’m sorry, but we have our rules.”
And with that, St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell.
The doors open and he finds himself in the middle of a green golf course. In the distance is a clubhouse and standing in front of it are all his friends and other politicians who had worked with him.
Everyone is very happy and in evening dress. They run to greet him, shake his hand, and reminisce about the good times they had while getting “rich at the expense of the people.
They played a friendly game of golf and then dine on lobster, caviar and the finest champagne.
Also present is the devil, who really is a very friendly guy who is having a good
time dancing and telling jokes.
They are all having such a good time that before the Senator realizes it, it is time to go.
Everyone gives him a hearty farewell and waves while the elevator rises…
The elevator goes up, up, up and the door reopens in heaven where St. Peter is waiting for him, “Now it’s time to visit heaven.”
So, 24 hours passed with the Senator joining a group of contented souls moving from “cloud to cloud, playing the harp and singing. They have a good time and, before he realizes it, the 24 hours have gone by and St. Peter returns.
“Well, then, you’ve spent a day in hell and another in heaven. Now choose your eternity.”
The Senator reflects for a minute, then he answers: “Well, I would never have said it before, I mean heaven has been delightful, but I think I would be better off in hell.”
So St. Peter escorts him to the elevator and he goes down, down, down to hell.
Now the doors of the elevator open and he’s in the middle of a barren land covered with waste and garbage. He sees all his friends, dressed in rags, picking up the trash and putting it in black bags as more trash falls from above.
The devil comes over to him and puts his arm around his shoulders.
“I don’t understand,” stammers the Senator. “Yesterday I was here and there was a golf course and clubhouse, and we ate lobster and caviar, drank champagne, and danced and had a great time. Now there’s just a wasteland full of garbage and my friends look miserable. What happened?”
The devil smiles at him and says, ”Yesterday we were campaigning …Today, you voted.”
Earth to Peggy I know exactly where the Tesla factory is I have been to it!
Like I said California was out of the running. Why do I say that? Because I already knew they were asking for cash up front and the Gov was not going to do that to tax payers….
I knew about this and even mentioned it here awhile ago!
I say reno is a good spot we should not pay to play. We produce electric cars here in California and BTW they are not on your platform….. Remember no green for Koch!
Hint buy Panasonic and keep eye on Sony
I keep up with stuff not wait until it’s over….
#9 RHT447 – Boy, this sure describes the deception and hell we’ve been in since they voted for Obama.
Oh that’s a keeper…I’m so grateful for funnies that lighten the moment. Reminds me that its all just so much stuff.
And that reminds me of the George Carlin routine about stuff…look it up yourself if you want, its X rated – It’s Carlin so expect bad language
For those who prefer things nicer one of his better quotes would easily apply in politics:
“Honesty may be the best policy, but it’s important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy.”
Well, I hope the plant will be all greeny … but I doubt it. Probably Nevada is going to reap all myriad forms of pollution created by industrial development and, even better, pony up “$1.3 billion in tax breaks over 20 years that includes waiving sales and use taxes, property and payroll taxes.”
All that will be made up by taxes paid by Tesla employees. Good deal. And Nevada is welcome to it.
Libby they have the good fortune of being able to be as green as its possible to be since they are building. let’s not place expectations higher than its possible to achieve. ( a favorite trick of the left)
“…includes waiving sales and use taxes, property and payroll taxes.”
No need for waivers there…Nevada is free of some and much lower in others already.
“All that will be made up by taxes paid by Tesla employees ”
You really don’t know how this stuff works, do you?
You really don’t know how this stuff works, do you?
I know the civic infrastructure to support the plant has to be paid for by somebody. If not by the corporation, then by whom?
And we’ll be wanting a short, credible, answer … not a lot of partisan drivel.
Why on earth would Tesla want to come to Taxifornia with it’s onerous over-regulation, even more onerous taxes, and environuts just waiting to pounce?
Libby: “I know the civic infrastructure to support the plant has to be paid for by somebody. If not by the corporation, then by whom?”
Well, which are you worried about, the employees, the corporation, or Nevada “ponying up” tax breaks? You suggested all three:
The employees will make whatever Tesla agrees to pay them and pay whatever taxes are due. Tesla will pay whatever taxes are due for the corporation.
If Nevada has given the company an advantage they expect that the taxes they will collect will outweigh the cost of infrastructure.
Gasoline taxes are high in Nevada, I imagine a lot of it comes from them. The casinos used to pick up the tab handily for just about everything but social changes and Indian casinos have changed that a bit. The lousy economy hasn’t helped much either in the last six year.
What is it with you and infrastructure? To hear you talk, anyone would think the poor are forced to pay for it or labor like dogs to build it.
Where do you think the money for anything comes from? Where?
“The employees will make whatever Tesla agrees to pay them and pay whatever taxes are due.”
Which would be all monies necessary to provide the infrastructure to support the plant.
“Tesla will pay whatever taxes are due for the corporation.”
Which would be not one thin dime for 20 years. You may be a willful ignoramus … but the rest of us are not.
Someday you’ll be honest about it. But nobody around here is holding their breath.
Libby you are the one being obtuse.
You love to pretend that evil business doesn’t do anything to contribute but the truth of the matter is, it is business that generates ALL of the tax money one way or another. They build the wealth that government takes in taxes from the businesses and from the people. They provide the jobs and the pay that allow people to buy things, own property and pay taxes.
And I have said many times that whatever “deals” municipalities make with business they make it with the knowledge that it will benefit the community…that the return on the tax break investment will be GREATER than the original tax break was.
“… nobody around here is holding their breath.”
Good to hear; we wouldn’t want you turning blue.
You’re the one who is dishonest…pretending that government is some saintly giver when in fact it provides nothing that it hasn’t taken first or created as a debt for the people.
