Of course, Obama has offered special recognition to police officers killed in the line of duty numerous times.

Editors note: In the most literal point of fact Obama, did on 6 occasions, either had a proclamation written (3 times) or he personally gave a brief speech at the law enforcement memorial ceremonies (3 times) held once a year in Washington DC. Its expected that presidents attend the memorial service. However, the above poster was not created by anyone at Post Scripts. We hope this point of clarification will satisfy any anal retentive types lying in wait to find some flaw with this site. Chris did you not notice the source citation that appeared on the photo?

Added perspective helps to unwrap the numerous times the President has offered special recognition to police officers.

In October 1991 President Ronald Reagan signed “Public Law 98-534, authorizing the Law Enforcement Officers Fund to establish a Memorial in Washington, D.C. to honor law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty. On October 15, 1991 The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C.

Since then our presidents have routinely delivered remarks at this and other police officer dedication and memorial services:

Dedication of the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial -Remarks by the President of the United States, The Honorable George H.W. Bush, October 15, 1991

Remarks at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Ceremony, President Wiliam J. Clinton – May 13, 1993

Remarks at the National Peace Officers Memorial Service, President William J. Clinton – May 15, 1996

Remarks by President G.W. Bush at 24th Annual National Peace Officers Memorial Service – May 15th

This sampling illustrates that this is a yearly tradition. All of the remarks made by the presidents, with the exception of the dedication, occured in the month of May… routine…scheduled into the president’s calendar.

This tradition does not rise to the level of special effort made by President Obama in the Gates, Martin, or Brown incidents. He has used these politically and opportunistically to advance a racial agenda.

Although the President can be commended for continuing a tradition the example offered by Politifact rings a bit hollow.

There is no excuse or defense for the callous, bigoted intrusion by the President in the three local police events, especially since he did it prior to his knowing the full facts in at least two of the cases. There is no plausible explanation for the extraordinary effort made by him and others in his administration/party to take sides based on color.

The office of the President is being used as a political weapon against local (white) law enforcement. His is the most, to quote the rhetoric of our liberal friends, privileged and powerful voice in the nation. He has squandered the opportunity to unite and heal using that voice. In doing so he has tarnished the remarks he’s made at the memorial events and encouraged further derision and division between the races. SAD. He is neither like Lincoln nor like MLK.

    Milestone or Millstone?

You know what would really help your cause? If you didn’t lie so much.

Dang, now you’re calling Jack a liar.

  5. Post Scripts says:

Jack didn’t lie about anything, Jack just thought this picture expressed the feelings of many Americans…that the president made a personal gesture for the family of a robbery suspect, but not quite so personal for any of the officers killed on duty. He has now made three intrusions into local police matters, but never to support the actions of the police and that is the gist of this poster shown above.

  6. Chris says:

Not only was it a lie, it was a “pants on fire” lie according to Politifact. That you did not originate the lie is of little consequence; very few of the lies spread here on Post Scripts actually start here. Passing them on without verifying them is still a form of dishonesty.

  7. Tina says:

Politifact based its “pants on fire” determination on remarks inspired by presidential tradition and without considering whether the remarks were in keeping with the Presidents actual record.

Given this lack of “thought” and failure to “research” one could say Politifact’s determination is a “lie.”

Chris accepts this dishonest appraisal without question because he doesn’t hold his source to the same standards of absolute perfection that he applies to contributors at PS.

The President is never short of positive sounding flowery words and can rise to any occasion. Like Bill Clinton before him, his remarks are peppered with the first person, which offers a window into the reasonable, affable, “man for all people” pretense he wishes to convey. The problem? His actions often contradict what he says.

Obama’s behavior toward police officers has been deplorable. In the three prominent instances when he chose to insert himself into events, speaking harshly of officers before being made aware of facts, the seeds of his racial agenda were planted, there for all to see. Even after the facts were known to all Obama didn’t change course or correct his error. Instead he allowed the lie to fester and grow. Given the power of his office, and the resulting social damage in our society, I’d say Politico should have given more serious thought to the subject before rendering their dishonest, inadequate “pants on fire” edict.
