    No wonder the communist gets it wrong, he went to Harvard. Religion is not central to maintaining a democratic republic.

    So… we are born moral? I’m not sure I get your point.

    As moral teaching has diminished so too has responsible functioning in our society. I have witnessed the change brought by this destructive reality since the mid fifties when religious training began to be questioned, attacked, dismissed and denigrated by the forces of pop psychology and the political atheism of the Marxist left.

    We are a republic! We’ve forgotten the difference that made the founders choose to create this nation a republic, and that’s a dam* shame. The article is worth a read for those seeking understanding greater than flippancy!

    Here’s the basic difference:

    The chief characteristic and distinguishing feature of a Democracy is: Rule by Omnipotent Majority. In a Democracy, The Individual, and any group of Individuals composing any Minority, have no protection against the unlimited power of The Majority. It is a case of Majority-over-Man. …

    …A Republic, on the other hand, has a very different purpose and an entirely different form, or system, of government. Its purpose is to control The Majority strictly, as well as all others among the people, primarily to protect The Individual’s God-given, unalienable rights and therefore for the protection of the rights of The Minority, of all minorities, and the liberties of people in general. The definition of a Republic is: a constitutionally limited government of the representative type, created by a written Constitution–adopted by the people and changeable (from its original meaning) by them only by its amendment–with its powers divided between three separate Branches: Executive, Legislative and Judicial. Here the term “the people” means, of course, the electorate.

    In a democracy, which those pushing “one man one vote” seek, the individual is not respected. We’ve been on this slippery slope for some time. Group special rights are achieved through bullying and the rights of the individual come under attack. The cops are targeted at present but Christians, corporations, the 1% have all had their turn in the docks. The left has accomplished this democracy rules power for “fundamental transformation” by creating a coalition of groups with grievances.

    too many young people today have no understanding of the value of individual rights given by a higher power or the fact that our republic is the only nation on earth to acknowledge the distinction in its founding documents. Sad!

    Do you believe that moral teaching is impossible without religion? Do you believe non-religious people cannot be moral?

    We have been through the republic v democracy discussion before. A republic is a TYPE of democracy. That is by definition. What you are describing every time you say democracy is a “direct” democracy. It’s important to use accurate terminology. To make such generalizations about democracy as a whole as your quoted portion does, or to describe the “differences between” a republic and a democracy, is misleading and inaccurate. If you want to talk about the differences between a republic and a direct democracy, then use that term and no one will disagree with you. But to say that republics and democracies are fundamentally different simply isn’t true; it would be like saying baseball caps are fundamentally different from hats.

    Furthermore, your suggestion that liberals are pushing for direct democracy in a way that would suppress individual rights is highly ironic given your oft-repeated defense and support of voters being able to determine which civil rights your gay neighbors should enjoy.

    “As moral teaching has diminished so too has responsible functioning in our society.” Agreed, but I do not think that any religion is the sole arbiter of moral teaching. Religion has shown itself to be as abusive as any other human construct. It is not free from evil.

    “We are a republic!” Damn straight we are. Note how Chris and the left in general mock that.

    Our constitution, with all its later amendment flaws is one of the most moral documents on earth. Teach your children well.

    And yes, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.”

    When it comes to morality, what document is more powerful than the Declaration of Independence?

    I’m not mocking the idea that we are a republic. We are a republic. I am mocking the idea that we are not a democracy. A republic is, by definition, a type of democracy.
