The Civil War soldier was a remake of an older painting that I wasn’t satisfied with, but the eyes and skin tone on this one are much improved. The original eye color was brown, but my daughter insisted I change it after the painting was done. The eyes are tough for me, there’s a technique for getting them to look translucent, but I’m not quite there yet. I really don’t like to do portraits, way too hard.
The next painting is an experiment in unconventional colors for a landscape. The large cliff was not added until the last minute, just seemed like it fit. I was inspired to do the latter by Robert Bennett Race, a local artist with a national reputation.
Both paintings are done in acrylic, then I bring out the colors with a semi-gloss clear coat.
Unfortunately the camera is using fluorescent lighting and it doesn’t pick up the full spectrum of color. Needless to say the color in daylight is a lot richer.
Expect more paintings here soon. I’m enrolled in an art class, so my homework assignments will appear here. Your criticisms are always welcome – its how I learn.
I do declare right fine work of a Parlor Soldier, but ifn’ y’all was to dabble with some Butternut Gray it would be fine as frogs hair…..

Seems only fair to have a matched pair.
Interesting style, it’s growing on me. I kind of like the paintings.
Thanks Dewey.
Some of your best work yet! I really love the green in the second one. Very soothing.
Thanks Chris, I’m glad you noticed that. I did a little experiment with this one specifically to generate a feeling of calmness or soothing and you keyed right on it. I’m four for four now, so I think it works. This is a new area for me, because normally would paint the colors as I find them, but I’m being forced to go outside my color box! Paul Gauguin, Cezanne, Degas, used color in amazing ways, so my challenge is to explore various colors.

Jack I don’t think you’re far off on those eyes.
It may be easier to get the desired effect with blue eyes, rather than with brown. The blue eyes look pretty translucent to me!
Good job.
The second painting is a study in vibrancy and serenity. While the water has a calming effect the bright yellow sky suggests liveliness.
A quiet evening that follows a day of playing in the sun, perhaps?
Thank you Tina, if I have painted those feelings then I have done it right. That was great to hear and glad you are back. Are you feeling like your old self yet? Sure hope so. You have really had a time of it!

Wow, thanks Pie for finding the three M’s and the movie, enjoyed them all very much. I hope all our commenters will take a look.
Really like them both. The only change I can suggest is to match up the soldier’s eyebrows. One is arched and thicker than the other. I like the thinner one on the right/his left.
Thanks Jack. I am feeling much better but still have a few issues to resolve. My RA has flared up again and we’re still not getting the results we need from my medication but participation here should improve now.
It feels a bit weird since I’ve been out of the loop for so long 🙂
I don’t know what kind of arthritis I have, but it’s getting into my fingers. Wish you much luck Tina, at least they are making great strides with RA.
Ooooh, ouch! Do little bumps form on the joints in your fingers from time to time? If so it may be osteoarthritis.
