Republican Debate: “Turn About is Fair Play”

Posted by Tina

I was without internet all day, bummer, and then I missed the beginning of the debate tonight on CNBC, double bummer.

I did tune in just as Ted Cruz was blasting one of the hosts: “The questions asked in this debate illustrate why the American people don´t trust the media…Everyone home tonight knows that the moderators have no intention of voting in a Republican primary. Look at the questions: “Donald Trump, are you a comic-book villain?” “Ben Carson, can you do math?” “John Kasich, will you insult two people over here?” “Marco Rubio, why don’t you resign?” “Jeb Bush, why have your numbers fallen?” ‘How about talking about the substantive issues that people care about?”

Wild applause followed!

I don’t know what went on before I tuned in but from that point forward, the candidates seemed to have grown a bit of a spine, clarifying on the gotcha questions, not taking any crap, delivering on important issues and (for the most part) refusing to be sucked in to personal jabs at each other. They didn’t run from areas of disagreement but they kept it civil.

The state of the economy ruled the night with establishment Republicans in Congress smacked down for their poor performance as much as Obama policies and their more of the same Democrat opponents. The flat tax came up several times as well as the need to address SS and entitlement programs. The case that the federal government should never have become this big and controlling we should be was made clear…we were meant to be a free people.

Trump’s showing tonight was sub par. I was surprised that Bush did as well as he did. Cruz gets my vote for top performance when he broke through the curtain of media control. The audience agreed. Marco Rubio hit the media and the opposing party, “The Democrats have their own super PAC, It’s called the mainstream media.” Dr. Carson had a similar moment when a question to him was booed. he had the last word, “They know.”

I’ll be interested in your thoughts. Everyone sees things from his own perspective. Did ya watch? Let’s chat.

Flipped between the debate and the World Series. Once it was evident that the “moderators” were asking smarmy, snarky questions I didn’t have much hope. Then came Cruz’s comments on the questions and I cheered along with the audience.

Kept flipping between the channels so I missed a couple of the moments, but caught them in the after-debate analysis. This time, the winners were the candidates – with the possible exception of Bush – and the losers were the moron moderators with the exception of Rick Santelli. But when you stop to realize that CNBC is just another NBC gaggle of presstitutes blindly repeating Demwit talking points, the moderators’ performance shouldn’t have been surprising. Next debate is with Fox Business and should be interesting, and won’t have to compete with the World Series. Ya gotta wonder about the intelligence of those who schedule the debates against major sporting events . . . . . . .

    • Tina says:

I’m really looking forward to the Fox business debate. We can expect substantive questions on the economy and taxes for sure. November 10th…mark it on your calendar!

What I saw last night was Ted Cruz lead the charge against the biased moderators, their gotcha questions and the other candidates joined him in taking control of the debate. I was actually cheering and yelling in response to many of the answers given. Never done that during any of the previous debates.

IMHO Cruz scored a grand slam home run, Rubio scored three runs, Huckabee, Christie, Fiorina, Carson scored and Bush, Paul, Kasich and Trump struck out. Kasich got the first question of the night and blew it by responding with his talking points. Trump showed his lack of economy knowledge and his response to the H1B Visa question sealed it that he had no idea what he was talking about. Bush is done. He was so bad I’ll bet the contributors to his super PAC are asking for their money back. Paul is gone too. He just can’t connect with the people.

The moderatos were exposed last night for the Democrat party shills they are. The candidates on the stage commanded the evening and gave us more of an insight into their position’s than the moderator had planned.

I learned yesterday that Cruz has a audiographic memory, which is a non-visual version of a photographic memory where a person remembers everything they hear. His Cruz Missile moment in response to the moderator was not only almost verbatim it was in sequential order. I can’t wait to see him go up against Hillary in a one on one debate.

Here’s a WSJ article from over a year ago that mentions his memory skill when they refer to it as a photographic memory.

  3. Harold says:

The Liberal media will contentiously ask those types of ‘in your face’ and clearly opinionated questions, which are not what concerned voters are viewing to hear. And by doing so they can misdirect information , however at the same time they clearly establish themselves as far left leaning Liberal bias.

As Cruz pointed out about their bias style of moderating.

It is the only way they (media) can remain steadfast in praising Obama and the DNC without need to bring to light of day the reveling facts of this administrations constant failures.

  4. Peggy says:

Ben Carson calls on rival campaigns to help him end ‘gotcha’ debate questions:

“Republican presidential front-runner Ben Carson told reporters Thursday that he was reaching out to every rival campaign to lobby for changes to future debate formats.

“Debates are supposed to be established to help the people get to know the candidate,” Carson said at a news conference before a speech at Colorado Christian University. “What it’s turned into is — gotcha! That’s silly. That’s not helpful to anybody.”

[The 5 big confrontations between CNBC moderators and GOP candidates]

Carson, who got less time at Wednesday night’s CNBC-hosted debate than candidates who were faring worse in polls, was raising the already high-decibel volume of criticism. Shortly after the debate ended, Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus tweeted that it had been ruined by “improper and unprofessional” questions from moderators.

“Using it for political purposes just doesn’t make any sense at all,” Carson said. “The first thing we’re looking for is moderators who are actually interested in getting the facts, and not just gotcha questions.”

    • J. Soden says:

Certainly hope Carson is successful. The viewers deserve better!
Actions have consequences and were I making the decisions, there would be no further GOP debates on any channel affiliated with a network whose talking heads are nothing but presstitutes blindly regurgitating Demwit talking points (Nothing But Crud).

      • Peggy says:

Besides the moderators loosing the viewers really lost. They tuned in to learn what the candidates planned to improve our economy and they got question like Ted Cruz pointed out.

Reince Priebus tonight on the Hannity show said CNBC would never hold another debate. Note none of the Democrat debates are hosted by Republican moderators. Priebus should do the same with the GOP candidates.

I like Cruz’s suggestion that Mark Levin, Sean Hannity, and Rush. Priebus liked the idea too.

Also remember that CNBC is a business, stock market, finance channel. Who are their major daily views? Wall street. There’s no way they were going to ask questions of the candidates that would have reflected badly on their main source of revenue.

        • Tina says:

Peggy the questions on the Fox Business debates (Nov 10th) should be much better. I watch that channel and the people there are all very concerned about taxes, government and money policies, and regulations and how they affect our economy.

  5. Chris says:

I missed it. What were the questions that conservatives are seeking unfair?

  6. Chris says:

    That should say “deeming” unfair.

    • Tina says:

So far I haven’t found a specific list of them. Scouring various articles I found a few examples.

John Harwood asked Trump if his fiscal policy amounted to a “comic-book way to run a presidential campaign.”

after citing a long list of financial troubles he’d had Marco Rubio was asked, “Do you have the maturity and the wisdom to lead a $17tn economy?”

Ted Cruz was asked, “Congressional Republicans, Democrats and the White House are about to strike a compromise that would raise the debt limit, prevent a government shutdown and calm financial markets that fear another Washington-created crisis is on the way. Does your opposition to it show that you’re not the kind of problem-solver American voters want?”

A question to Ben Carson was pressed and then booed by the audience:

“This is a company called Mannatech, a maker of nutritional supplement, with which you had a 10-year relationship. They offered claims that they could cure autism, cancer. They paid $7 million to settle a deceptive marketing lawsuit in Texas. And yet your involvement continued, why?” CNBC’s Carl Quintanilla asked Carson, also questioning whether it spoke to his “vetting process or judgment.”

      Carson dismissed the question.

“That’s easy to answer. I didn’t have an involvement with them. Total propaganda. I did a couple speeches for them. I did speeches for other people — they were paid speeches. It is absolutely absurd to say that I had any kind of relationship with them. Do I take the product? Yes. I think it’s a good product,” he said.

The moderator then pointed out that Carson was on the company’s webpage. Carson said he didn’t give them permission to do that.

After the audience loudly booed the follow-up question, Carson simply said: “They know.”

In contrast with these petty, down in the mud gotcha questions the Democrat candidates were asked serious questions that set them up to make mini campaign speeches to defend their positions and records. Example:

COOPER: Senator Sanders. A Gallup poll says half the country would not put a socialist in the White House. You call yourself a democratic socialist. How can any kind of socialist win a general election in the United States?

  7. Chris says:

Well, I have to agree with you that those first three questions were out of line and overly confrontational for a debate.

The one they asked Carson, however, seems valid to me. And his answer is as incompetent and dishonest as ever:

““That’s easy to answer. I didn’t have an involvement with them. Total propaganda. I did a couple speeches for them. I did speeches for other people — they were paid speeches.”

Doing paid speeches in promotion of a company obviously constitutes a “relationship.” Especially videos such as this one:

    http://youtu.be/xQSoHRwtwvI

“It is absolutely absurd to say that I had any kind of relationship with them. Do I take the product? Yes. I think it’s a good product,” he said.”

He is literally still endorsing the product in front of millions of people while denying he has any relationship with the company! Hilarious. I’m glad this question was asked, as I wasn’t aware of his work with this disreputable company, and his answer revealed a lot about his character.

The only explanation for Carson is that he’s such a brilliant neurosurgeon, he’s actually managed to remove his own brain.

    • Tina says:

Wow! Your as vicious as the host was to Carson!

Carson was first accused by the “host”of being on the companies board. It’s possible he was denying that, more formal, relationship.

Endorsement of a product does not equal sitting on the board of the company.

“The only explanation for Carson is that he’s such a brilliant neurosurgeon, he’s actually managed to remove his own brain.”

If you were a Republican you’d be labeled a racist by now.

If this is all they have on Dr. Carson they haven’t got much.

On the other hand there’s a boatload of direct involvement in shady transactions and deals in Hillary’s past. See this NYT article. See also here, here, here and here.

Bernie Sanders has a few questionable things in his closet as well. See also here.

New definition of host: Person who invites you to an event and then lays in wait to cut you to shreds…just in time for Halloween…synonym “goul”

      • Chris says:

Oh, Hilary has the ethics of a mollusk, I don’t doubt it. I don’t have time to look at the links about Bernie right now, but I won’t be voting for him either, as he has the leadership qualities of a mollusk. If I had to choose, I’d reluctantly choose Hilary.

I agree that this debate did show liberal bias in the media.

        • Tina says:

          Thanks Chris.

The point is that America needs our media to serve the people. They must be neutral if they are going to serve in the best interests of the people. I hope this makes a difference and inspires change going forward.

    • Pie Guevara says:

Re: “The only explanation for Carson is that he’s such a brilliant neurosurgeon, he’s actually managed to remove his own brain.”

Like no one saw this coming. Chris burns a negro.

      • Chris says:

        “Chris burns a negro.”

You have been repeatedly told by Jack and Tina to stop using this racist language here.

What is going to be done about it?

        • Tina says:

Chris expllain what you think is racist about the comment.

          • Chris says:

No. I won’t even dignify that with a response. You are playing stupid.

Edited by Tina to respond directly: No Chris I am not playing stupid. You made a disparaging remark about Ben Carson, the black conservative running for President. Most of us on the right have experienced that such remarks about any black candidate on the left would be met with accusations of racism. Joe Biden made a remark about our current President that implied similar things about other blacks. No one on the left objected. I am simply asking you to explain why your remark is different and you should not be called out for it.

  8. Peggy says:

Can you say why America is the greatest country in the world?
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJh9t9h6Wn0

    • Tina says:

America is the greatest country in the world because we are the only country with a Constitution that protects the rights of people against government tyranny (king, dictator)…not that we’ve been able to keep it.

We haven’t lost it completely yet but we are well on our way. The things articulated in the video about America’s accomplishments in the past were possible because we had freedom…not because were “informed.”

I’m not positive but I believe this was made when GWB was president. It was a kinder gentler anti-Bush (Hollywood is smarter?) ad. If anyone knows otherwise please correct me.

  9. Peggy says:

Here’s a good example of just how bad the moderators were.

Proof: NBC Debate Moderator John Harwood Lied About Rubio’s Tax Plan:

“A document has been unearthed proving John Harwood, the left-wing moderator of Wednesday night’s CNBC debate, lied when he attacked Senator Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) 79% over his tax plan — and that document is Harwood’s own tweet from just two weeks ago.

Here’s the false gotcha Harwood launched at Rubio:

The Tax Foundation, which was alluded to earlier, scored your tax plan and concluded that you give nearly twice as much of a gain in after-tax income to the top one-percent as to people in the middle of the income scale. Since you’re a champion of Americans living paycheck to paycheck, don’t you have that backward?

Rubio immediately hit Harwood back: “No, you wrote a story on it, you had to go back and correct it.”

Harwood laughed and lied again, “No, I didn’t.”

Except Harwood did. Here’s Harwood’s own tweet from just two weeks ago:

  10. J. Soden says:

Well, well, well. Looks like actions have consequences after all!!!

    http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/oct/30/rnc-pulls-out-nbc-debate/

  11. Ken Churchill says:

“The Republican presidential candidates’ debate on CNBC wasn’t so much a debate as it was a firing squad manned by left-leaning journalists.

“Over and over journalistic equivalents of, “When did you stop beating your wife?” were asked of the candidates.

“The reporter-moderators weren’t just asking questions: they were prosecuting the candidates at a televised show trial. Personal attacks were disguised as questions.”

“With Republicans at each others’ throats, manipulated by agenda-driven left-wing journalists, Wednesday was just another night in the life of America’s biased mainstream media.”

    From
    http://www.frontpagemag.com/fpm/260620/cnbcs-televised-show-trial-matthew-vadum

The statement “Personal attacks were disguised as questions” exactly describes how the CNBC panel conducted the “debate.” This is but another demonstration of the daily abuses showing just how blatantly corrupt the leftist circus of mainstream “journalism” has become.

Republicans should turn their backs on such venues. I wish one of the candidates had announced that he or she was not going to continue to participate in this reprehensible farce and had walked off stage. Maybe others would have joined in. I would have loved to have seen an empty stage leaving the CNBC panel of hatchet clowns to snigger among themselves.

    • Tina says:

Ken you have a point. it would have been great to see them turn their backs and walk off stage.

I think it’s also great to see them stand their ground and fight back. It’s good to see the push through that veil of media control to grab the narrative.

We are hungry for honesty and candidates and leaders who present themselves authentically.

Yours is a thoughtful comment, I hope you will join in our discussions often.
