Out of the Past: A Guide for Choosing Our Next President

As we all contemplate our own choice for the Republican nominee for president it might be useful to seek guidance from those we perceive to have walked down the road we’re on and won. That’s exactly what Bruce Walker does in his article, Losing What Reagan Won at the American Thinker. Walker begins by showing us where we’ve been in the past, where we are now, and finally, where we must go in the future if we are to reach the goal of “a new and happier world” in which America becomes a winner again. He ask important questions and makes striking comparisons that point toward the model we should seek in a candidate:

What happened? Why are we today facing a sinister web of Islamic terrorism, a renewed Russian empire, a menacing China, and a dangerous North Korea? Why are we facing a second recession – a serious economic spiral downward, global in scope, with no good way out? Why is Western Europe, which stood pretty firm against the Soviet Empire, unable to stop an army of angry refugees?

Reagan inherited an America as wretched as America is today. Carter no more feared communism than Obama fears radical Islam. Carter preached austerity as blithely as Obama’s flacks soothingly tell Americans that we are really in good shape economically. Carter, like Obama, leaves an America despondent and unsure. What will the next president, as the revitalizer of our nation, need to do? What did Reagan do?

The answer is threefold, which is not surprising given Reagan’s three legged stool analogy. Reagan believed that for our nation to be strong it must have strength in three major areas, 1. Strong Free-market economic principles, 2. A strong National defense, and 3. Strong social/moral values. When all three are present the stool stands firmly in support of our nation. Lose one and the stool will collapse. We need a president that leads in such a way that our nation remains united behind those three principles.

In terms of foreign policy Walker takes from past history, again applying three lesson: 1. Boldly name the enemies of freedom, 2. Be a bold champion of the oppressed, and 3. Proudly stand behind our Judeo Christian moral code. I hope you will read Mr. Walkers article. It offers food for thought.

Which candidate will best lead in terms of what’s needed the most right now. Which candidate is best suited to stand up for America, the American people, and America’s friends and allies around the world? The choice you make will help to determine our future. More of the same will not end well.

Peggy great video; any idea who compiled it?

I wouldn’t vote for Trump either. If he was the only other choice I would vote against Hillary/Sanders/Other by casting a symbolic vote for Trump. It just isn’t in my nature to sit on the sidelines. The way I look at it, sitting out is a symbolic vote for Hillary/Sanders/Other. There is one caveat…if I perceived the “other” candidate had a prayer of being honest, reasonable, and pro-America as I see Joe Lieberman.

I find it particularly fascinating that Trump said he lived in NY all his life so that obviously his values wouldn’t be the same as the people in Iowa…the very thing he jumped on Cruz for saying. He deflected by turning his response to 911. Savvy but also sleazy.

None of his flip flops surprise me.

One of the things that’s puzzling is that he had to know all of this would come out so he must have dismissed it as irrelevant. He’s another who thinks he can effect outcomes by the sheer force of his personality…and says so. He wouldn’t be more of the same but the person I’m looking for he is not.

The next few weeks will be interesting to watch.

Tina, As I understand it. Republican’s votes will only count in the primary. Because we are a winner take all electoral college state dominated by Democrat voters Republican’s vote in the general election are only symbolic since the populace vote doesn’t count. If our electoral college votes was based on a percentage of votes cast for the candidates then Republican votes would count.

My vote for Cruz will count in the June primary, but whether I vote or not for whomever the Republican candidate is in the Nov. general it makes no difference. Let me know if I’m wrong.

The video says it was produced by Stand for Principles PAC. Here’s there website. Turns out it’s also where I got the information from for earlier comments I’ve made. Didn’t realize it until I saw their homepage.

Peggy you aren’t wrong as far as I know.

As I wrote before my vote in the general election will be symbolic because I can’t justify not participating in the vote since not voting would still be a symbolic vote for Hillary/Bernie/other.

I respect the different position you take.

Also, saw Trumps polls today shot up because of Palin. Wonder how his statement about his supporters being so loyal and dumb he could shoot someone and they’d still stay with him.

Hopefully, the next poll which should reflect Beck’s support for Cruz and Trump’s shooting remarks will change his positives into a negative.
