Republican Debate

Posted by Tina

All in all the Republican field represented conservatism well tonight with only a few exceptions, some of which were roundly booed. One such instance occurred when Trump tried to defend eminent domain for his hotel parking lot as “in the public interest.” Another followed an attack on Ted Cruz. By the end of the debate I was once again satisfied that a vote for any of our candidates would greatly improve the nation in terms of our safety, our military, the economy, jobs, healthcare, taxes, and the size of government. Realizing the bar has been set very low by the current administration and Congress this may not mean much, but the alternative (Hillary or Bernie) will spell disaster for America.

Bush and Christie both spoke boldly of downsizing the federal government by giving power back to the states. Rubio stumbled once again by seeming too polished and repetitive on economic issues but was stronger on foreign policy. Cruz demonstrated his steady support of the Constitution and took the opportunity to say he was the only candidate with a record of standing up to Congress. Kasich was strong on economic issues, citing his past record but Drudge reports him as saying, “I ought to be running in the Democrat Primary.” Why? Because they desperately need a candidate or because he’d get more attention? Carson was given too few questions but comported himself well. It seems his candidacy is ill-timed. I think of the Eisenhower years when I hear him speak…after the storm when calm, reflection and serious care is important.

Moderators at ABC can be commended for asking good questions on a variety of issues that are important to the people. ABC deserves credit for following the lead of FOX Business and FOX News as opposed to the MSNBC disaster, even if that one did open the opportunity to for Cruz and Trump to slice through the veil of media bias and politically correct thinking.

Thought it was the best debate so far. Liked the way the moderators let the candidates argue out issues instead of adhering hardline to the cut off bell. I was surprised there were no questions on the economy.

Trump did the worst and showed how little he understands the issues and was exposed for his eminent domain beliefs. Christie and Bush did much better and should move up in the polls. Carson’s statements against Cruz surprises me based on the evidence that CNN did broadcast live on TV his temp. departure from the campaign. Tweets were sent, but no correction was made right away on the live shows.

It is odd that the economy was left out of the program, Peggy, except with respect to governors touting their records. That provided some contrast even if it wasn’t direct. The candidates also brought up the numbers of companies leaving America because of high taxation and ridiculously oppressive regulation…and healthcare alternatives, which is part of the economy.

On the other hand this is ABC. I doubt if they wanted to encourage talk about the lousy economy, a hollowed out middle class, and the sorry state of joblessness and underemployment in America.

Apparently Rubio’s team made the same mistake as Cruz’s but Cruz, having just won Iowa, became the target. I think it was a mistake that would easily happen in the midst of a caucus which, lets get real, is a bit chaotic and intense. I think too much has been made of it, especially after Cruz on several occasions apologized. Trump’s cheap shot at the end was adolescent and wrong. I think he was still pouting for having lost.

The economy is the elephant in the room the ABC moderators and the other left leaning networks don’t want to talk about. Fox just announced they’ll have another debate in March, I believe. Hopefully, they’ll bring it up then.

CNN is using Cruz as a scape goat to cover their butts. The Rubio info is on the internet with copies of the tweets done by his team. One just has to look for it, because we all know the media won’t tell the truth.

Very disappointed in the way Carson has dealt with it. His team is the one who started it with their announcement he was headed for Florida for a change of clothes. Not a rational reason for a presidential candidate. Last I heard Iowa and NH have cleaners and clothing stores.

Carson and Trump seem to be playing tag team with Cruz. Trump backed off when Carson started crying foul. Surely, someone has pointed out to him about Rubio’s team’s tweets. This all lets me know who they think is their real threat.

I think I posted this before, but in case you missed it here is the story about Rubio’s support of amnesty when he was working with Schumar and the Gang of Eight.

Had company, so I missed watching the Twitter comments – which is the best way to handle any political debate. And in reading the reporting on what happened, I don’t think I missed anything important with this version of Debate-a-thon.

I missed the debate, but saw parts of it later. I think Rubio is in trouble, he stumbled when hit by Chris Christy. I agree he looks too polished and he has canned answers, which does not play well to the voters this year. Christy and Bush still have a shot I think. Bush is making a comeback.

After a questionable start this debate, as Peggy noted, was the best yet. The candidates got more of a chance to expound on issues and their positions. When the field whittles down I will be happy.

It’s a shame Rubio seemed too canned in his remarks since the point he was making was right on the money. Obama isn’t an incompetent; he is doing exactly what he said he would do.

Bush did have a very good night and although I am tired of the dynasty aspect of politics I think he would do a good job.

We miss you Jack. Hope things are continuing to go well.
