When Enemies See Weakness

In the last five years, we’ve had a number of incidents where our military people were taken hostage or harassed by unfriendly nations, namely North Korea and Iran. But, lately even Russia is entering into the mix. We’ve had several warships buzzed, sometimes as close as 30 feet and the latest Iranian patrol boats deliberately crossed into the path of a U.S. Navy destroyer, forcing it deviate from its course or risk a collision.

The message they are sending is clear, “You’re not so tough, but we are!” They’ve got Obama’s number and his tepid response has only reinforced their low opinion and led to more incidents.

He has been sending clear signals since he took office that he is absolutely above the nastiness of fighting!  He prefers turning the other cheek or appeasement, if necessary. Obama see’s this as a personal attribute, something enlightened and educated people should do.  Well, this might work great at Harvard, however to our enemies it is a sure sign of weakness.  It’s a green light to finally tweak the nose of the tiger.   To his people, Putin looks like a strong leader when he sends his jets to buzz our fleet.  Iran and North Korea just hate us, so whatever they can do to insult us, they will, and they probably score political points at home too.

Throughout the 50’s, 60 and 70’s the United States military power was enough to give pause to everyone, except one insane leader in North Korea. But, the mismanagement of the Vietnam war tarnished our image and we started a downward spiral as the “paper tiger.”  Oh, its not because we couldn’t win that war, but because of radical leftists in America influenced by the cold war and the liberals in politics. They were enough to undermined every military gain we had and turned it into political defeat.   We the people, sent mixed signals to the enemy in a time of war….so of course they took advantage of it.  This is human nature.

Now Obama is showing weakness on the world stage and predictably our worst enemies are once again taking advantage of it.   Why Obama couldn’t see this coming is hard to understand.  And just as it was in Vietnam, our service personnel must pay the price for a president’s political incompetence.

Obama has only 5 months to go, and by all appearances he’s already done with being president and can’t wait to leave office. So, the last thing he wants is a military crisis. But, don’t you think our enemies in Iran can see this as a time of great opportunity? Of course, and so can Putin in Russia.   It doesn’t take a swami to predict that we will see more of this humiliation until Obama is gone.  Hopefully, nobody will die because of it, but you never know. The last time a USN plane was buzzed the Russian plane came within 10 feet.
