Amherst – Burning Old Glory on Veteran’s Day

by Jack

The Dean of Hampshire College in Amherst, Mass., decided its better to give students their way than defend the flag or tell them no.

But, thank God the Vets didn’t see it that way.  Around 1,000 veterans gathered at a western Massachusetts college Sunday to protest the school’s decision to stop flying all flags, including U.S. flags, after students allegedly burned a flag in protest of Donald Trump’s election victory.

Hampshire College in Amherst outraged many with its decision to remove all flags from campus. Protesters expressed their displeasure and hoped to reach out to students during their demonstration.

“They took down my flag, they have a right to that, I’m here to defend their right to do that but I want them to understand how bad that hurts me,” veteran Jerry Maguire told WWLP-TV.

The station reported that hundreds all over the New England region joined the protest, including Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. He stood with the veterans as well.

The students are wrong.  It may not be illegal to burn the US flag, but it is wrong.  Personally, I would like to see anyone who burns the flag on US soil do a little jail time. If they burn the flag flying at a public place, like a college, it comes under vandalism,  destruction of public property and possibly arson.  These are illegal acts and the law can sentence the offender to jail.

Why the college dean chose to remove the flags and appease the no-nothing children/students and upset adult Americans, is beyond me.  It was a typically liberal thing to do, I get that part, but I will never understand the deeper… why?

These quasi-adults (children really) need direction, direction involves being told no, it involves being accountable and they need to toughen up and show some patriotism and respect.  If they don’t, they ought to get their collective asses kicked hard.  That was not the message this weak kneed Dean sent.  He missed a wonderful learning opportunity.

The supreme court ruled against the schools who tried to block military recruiters from their campuses. It’s time for it to do the same with our nation’s flag.

“All eight sitting justices who heard oral arguments in Rumsfeld v. Forum for Academic and Institutional Rights (FAIR) last December rejected the schools’ argument that being forced to allow the recruiters on campus violated their First Amendment rights.”

Burning the flag is a sign of dissent. it is not wrong.

BTW where were those Flags made? China?

it is OK to Burn the flag as a sign of distress.

it is OK to not stand and pledge to the corporations that run this country

It is not Ok to lie to Americans about these wars and kill our citizens over pipelines, Oil, and profits.

We are no more than a Fascist Imperialist Bully who has lied over and over again.

Hey Wikileaks released 1970’s communications. very good to read. Especial as we overthrow govs for our own gain.

Hillary has done what those have done before her. Wee took her down but you protect your own crooks.

I will burn a Flag if I ever feel the need to.

I will take out every crook politician I can. You can not say the same.

I will protect the Earth that gives us life,

    • Tina says:

Yes Dewey your superiority is mind boggling, hail Dewey, king of self congratulatory delusion….

      YOU took out Hillary?

HA! Your guy CAVED to Hillary, possibly for a piece of shoreline property.

TRUMP was our guy; he WON. We CHOSE him to stop the progressive destruction and turn this ship to a strong new course. YOU do not get Trump or his intention, therefore you stomp your little feet and wave your little fist. At least it will keep you busy.

Dewey, you need to get over yourself. Imagining that you can “protect the earth” is over the top narcissism. The earth renews and restores itself, as designed. In comparison, you are no bigger than a grain of sand. The best you can do is clean up after yourself and get out of the way as others do the same.

Some of us revere the flag as it stands for the principle of our founding: Freedom! It stands for liberty and justice for every individual citizen. Communicating the strength of that reverence sometimes requires bold, even outrageous, statements in this land of ignorance and attitude. Gotta poke the sleepy puppy if you want him to wake up to begin to explore the wonderful nation he is privileged to occupy.

Dewey: “it is OK to Burn the flag as a sign of distress. ”

WRONG! Flying the flag upside down is the sign of distress.

      THE UNITED STATES FLAG CODE
      Title 4, Chapter 1

      Upside Down Flag

Flying the American flag upside down is an officially recognized signal of distress.

Here is the relevant part of the US Code of Laws regarding how to fly the flag when in distress:

§ 8(a)The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

Most individuals who have served in military service of our nation should recognize this signal.

People ask if it is OK to fly the flag upside down in protest, for example: to protest the economy, an election or against the war. The Flag Code states it should only be displayed upside down when there is extreme danger to life or property. It would be quite the stretch to make an argument that any type of political purpose would constitute “dire distress”. It is recommended that people who wish to make a protest in this fashion do so that it is respectful of the flag. We must remember that our flag represents the government of the United States and all of its policies. It also stands for our freedom of speech, our right to practice or even not to practice the religion of our choice and it represents one united nation in all its glory and the American values.

Most importantly it stands for the sacrifices made past, present and in the future to protect our freedoms. Read the proper ways to display the American flag under specific circumstances on our Displaying The Flag page.

Dewey you should also know, we do make flags right here in America:

      Flags Unlimited

      American Flags

      American Flag Company

  3. Tina says:

I fear Jack that the “deeper why” is disdain for the republic and full embrace of the progressive ideal,a romanticized notion of the superiority of socialism.

When a higher power is rejected, when you are void of humility, when you see the self as more important than it actually is, control over others becomes an underlying driving force. The delusion is that somehow, through the power of superiority alone (YOU CARE), Nirvana can actually be realized. It becomes a moral imperative to bring “your gift” to the world. People jump on that band wagon to “make a difference,” not realizing they what they really seek is a sense of self-importance. We can never make a real difference in our lives or in the world until we humble ourselves, until we realize our value is limited and perfect within a larger scheme. In this state, others are appreciated and recognized as pieces in the greater puzzle. In this state we are free to make a difference within our sphere of influence. In this state we are not wrapped up in delusions of grandeur.

President Obama is a perfect example. His intentions and goals sounded good but his ability to deliver was hampered by his lack of common sense, humility and experience. In that speech he admitted his limitations and then promptly set that aside. His tool box was filled with a belief that he was right. We had clues. His intention was sometimes expressed in ridiculous, delusional, statements…”this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal…”. His record is one of failure across the board. He had opportunity for profound contribution and instead…

    It’s history now…thank God!

    Onward and upward.

Burning the flag as a form of protest is a deeply offensive and visceral insult to a majority of Americans. Who burns the flag? The left-wing.

I applaud the left every time they make themselves even more hated than they already are by burning the flag. I applaud Dewey. Stupid is as stupid does, bless their tiny hearts. Burn it, Dewey, burn it! Burn, baby, burn!

By the way, a ceremonial burning is the preferred way of disposing of a worn and old flag. Boy Scouts know this.

    • Libby says:

Whereas the utterly righteous right wing leaves it hanging ragged in the dark.

There’s a sign of agedness. I’ve been noticing way too much of this, and it does piss me off.

If you’re pissed, burn it. But if you’re going to fly it, do it respectfully.

      • Post Scripts says:

Libby if you were to weigh flag burning as an ethics problem, what factors would be involved and what would be your course of action?

As a learned person we both know there are at least considerations of modern ethics, utilitarianism, greater good, virtue, duty (Deontological), egalitarianism ethics come to mind. Where exactly does flag burning fit? Would it be the greater good theory? How about duty, we had an obligation to burn the flag because… and generally this is linked somewhere to the greater good. Would you indulge me in this ethical exercise….I promise its not a trap. I just think ethics should be involved in decisions regarding an act of protest. You share and then I will give you my thoughts.

I encourage Lippy and her ilk to burn the flag every time they get “pissed.”

  7. Harold says:

United States Flag: From a article

“The flag of the United States is sometimes symbolically burned, often in protest of the policies of the American government, both within the country and abroad. The United States Supreme Court in Texas v. Johnson, 491 U.S. 397 (1989), and reaffirmed in U.S. v. Eichman, 496 U.S. 310 (1990), has ruled that due to the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, it is unconstitutional for a government (whether federal, state, or municipality) to prohibit the desecration of a flag, due to its status as “symbolic speech.” However, content-neutral restrictions may still be imposed to regulate the time, place, and manner of such expression. And if the flag that was burned was someone else’s property (as it was in the Johnson case, as Johnson had stolen the flag from a Texas bank’s flagpole), they could be charged with petty larceny (a flag usually sells at retail for less than USD 20), or with destruction of private property, or possibly both.”

Yes Jack, I am with you on some sort of time served, maybe not Jail, but a good dose of community service at a VA hospital.
