An unruly mob of leftist activists caused the strangulation of free speech and the peaceful exchange of ideas early this evening. The mob moved on the Berkley campus turning over cars over, bashing ATM’s, setting fires, and breaking windows as they shouted obscenities in hatred of our new president and “fascists.” UC campus police told the animals they had 10 minutes to disperse from Sproul Plaza at around 7:00 PM but the updates to the story indicate they just continued causing trouble in and around the campus.
UC Berkley issued a statement saying they condemn “in the strongest possible terms the violence and unlawful behavior that was on display,”:
The University and the UCPD went to extraordinary lengths to plan for this event and put the appropriate resources in place in order to maintain security. Officials were in contact with other campuses and paid close attention to lessons learned at the speaker’s prior events. Dozens of additional police officers were on duty. Multiple methods of crowd control were in place. Ultimately and unfortunately, however, it was simply impossible to maintain order given the level of threat, disruption, and violence.
We regret that the threats and unlawful actions of a few have interfered with the exercise of First Amendment rights on a campus that is proud of its history and legacy as home of the Free Speech Movement. As Chancellor Dirks made clear in his message to the Berkeley campus community, while Mr. Yiannopoulos views, tactics and rhetoric are profoundly contrary to our own, we are bound by the Constitution, the law, our values, and the campus’s Principles of Community to enable free expression across the full spectrum of opinion and perspective.
When you consider some of what has passed for higher learning on the American college campus in the past half century it’s pretty easy to see the university has helped to make this bed and now we all get to lie in it.
The scheduled speaker, Milo Yiannopoulos, spoke with Tucker Carlson tonight:
When this stuff hits the news like tonight it’s national news on every network has been carrying it. When stuff like this happens people start to ask questions and start to reconsider sending their kids to these colleges in the first place, donating to these colleges and whether these colleges afford the revered position we afford them in society. I think tonight is odious and horrible spectacle and very humiliating for American higher education. But I would like to think it will have a silver lining. I like to think that good will come of it… Name-calling, slander, words, insults and now violence. They never want to debate because they’re scared. They don’t have the facts on their side.
Indeed, they have absolutely nothing of substance to say. How could they with such fried brains! They live to create chaos and discord. They aspire to invoke fear. All they invoke in this American citizen is loathing. Sensible democrats be aware…this is the crew your party encourages and emboldens. The sixties radicals have reinvented themselves on two fronts, sniveling scaredy cats that require therapy rooms and raving maniacs bent on violence all in the name of social justice.
Those who want answers to how to turn little snowflakes graduates into raving idiot activists must read, “Welcome to the ‘Social Justice’ University,” by Carl Salzman of the Gatestone Institute. Yes, you too can be the proud parent of one of these lunitics…just send them to one of today’s many elite colleges.
Yes. The children are claiming that “hate speech” should not be “free speech”, which is very idealistic of them, but incorrect, and we will make this clear to them.
The world is NOT coming to an end; settle down.
However, Milo is … well … “groady” is not usually a term I apply to a young man, but here it fits:

Good points! Glad you’re not excusing this.
Have any of these “snowflakes” (I hate that word, but it applies here) ever heard of not showing up to see a speaker they dislike? Don’t they realize that this kind of behavior only makes Milo look like a victim, and brings him more attention? He’s called himself a master troll, and this is what trolls want. I’m OK with protests but not when they defeat their own purpose, and especially not when they’re violent.
If my college Republicans invited Milo to speak I’d probably ask them to rescind their invitation and find a better conservative speaker. Milo doesn’t have anything to offer a college-educated audience. But if they want to invite someone like him, let them. College campuses do NOT just belong to liberals. Maybe if they’d stop protesting, he’d get smaller crowds.
There IS a problem with violent protests on the left that does not exist on the right, and it’s up to us to get this under control.
