A number of US attorneys resigned following the election of President Donald Trump but today it was announced that an additional 46 US attorneys were asked to resign, “in order to ensure a uniform transition.” Trump will have the final word on whether to accept the resignations.
Chuck Schumer said he was “troubled to learn of reports of requests for resignations from the remaining U.S. Attorneys, particularly that of Preet Bharara. Trump met with Bharara, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York, following his election in what appeared to have been a positive meeting. (Question marks all around.) Schumer also claims this move is unprecedented:
“While it’s true that presidents from both parties made their own choices for U.S. Attorney positions across the country, they have always done so in an orderly fashion that doesn’t put ongoing investigations at risk. They ask for letters of resignation but the attorneys are allowed to stay on the job until their successor is confirmed,” he said.
“By asking for the immediate resignation of every remaining U.S. Attorney before their replacements have been confirmed or even nominated, the President is interrupting ongoing cases and investigations and hindering the administration of justice.”
Diane Feinstein also weighed in:
“Under previous administrations, orderly transitions allowed U.S. attorneys to leave gradually as their replacements were chosen,” Feinstein said. “This was done to protect the independence of our prosecutors and avoid disrupting ongoing federal cases.
At a time when Attorney General Sessions has recused himself from major investigations into the Trump campaign, the independence of federal prosecutors could not be more important,” she added, reiterating the call for a special prosecutor.
These two Democrat politicians are such phonies. They are relying on the ignorance of youth and the short memories of most adults to get away with specious accusations. But those in the know will recall the actions of AG Janet Reno under Bill Clinton during his first weeks as President:
n March 1993, Janet Reno began her tenure as President Bill Clinton’s attorney general by summarily firing United States attorneys for 93 of the 94 federal districts (one, Michael Chertoff, was retained in New Jersey, at the request of Democratic Senator Bill Bradley). That is more than twice as many as Trump attorney general Jeff Sessions fired on Friday.
.
Reno fired 93 of 94 attorneys! The one remaining survived only as a favor to fellow Democrat, Senator Bill Bradley. And these attorneys weren’t the only ones to get the axe in the first days of Bill Clinton’s presidency. A move made by Hillary dubbed “Travelgate” involved the firing of the entire travel office and with it unfounded charges brought against the director, Billy Dale. He was later acquitted of all charges. The unsavory attack featured confidential FBI files of a private citizen, Dale, obtained unlawfully. There is nothing unusual going on in the Attorney generals office. This is just another example of the brand of politics that has the nation frustrated and angry. As Andrew McCarthy explains at National Review, “U.S. attorneys are the instruments through which the president exercises his policy discretion. That is why they are political appointees. They do not have power of their own. Under our Constitution, all executive power is reposed in the president alone. Every officer of the executive branch is thus a delegate. The U.S. attorney exercises the president’s power and can be removed at the president’s will.”
I agree with Sessions’ decision. This will help to ensure a smoother transition, especially at a time when Democrats are all about undermining and obstructing the new President in every way possible.
The people want action from DC. These ridiculous distractions are not hurting Trump, they are hurting the American people looking for relief and a new way forward.
This is, I have to admit, CNN making something out of nothing. They would all be replaced in the normal course of events. The only odd thing is they’re being sacked, but required to stay on until replacements are found … which the TA seems to have a little trouble doing.
Once upon a time, the hundred day mark was when a President had an administration in place and commenced upon an agenda. Not this time, apparently.
According to Andrew McCarthy it isn’t unusual for dismissed attorney’s to remain until replaced.
Once upon a time the opposition party had the decency and grace to approve the new presidents choices and offer a “honeymoon” period.
Your party is the one preventing movement and obstructing progress in this administration…quit playing dumb. We know that you know what’s gong on.
Once upon a time, Presidents did not issue unconstitutional orders on a Saturday morning (when their Keepers were at Temple and could not prevent it). This all is going to write up spectacularly well … on down the timeline.
Nonsense! You are quite aware of a recent president who issued unconstitutional orders:
An Executive Unbound: The Obama Administration’s Unilateral Action revisits the Constitution with regard to executive and legislative powers and then point to examples where Obama overstepped his constitutional authority.
President Obama took it upon himself to amend the ACA, to invent labor law exemptions, to waive the TANF Work Requirement, ignore a statutory deadline, attempted to make “recess” appointments while the Senate was in session, and much much more.
The End
Happens regularly whenever there’s a change in administrations and the Demwits complain loudly every time.
Nothing to see here. These aren’t the Droids you’re looking for. Move along. . .
The MSM once again is acting like political spokesmen instead of news reporters. They fail to give credit to those who can read and to have acquired enough common sense to figure out that according to their “reporting” one party can do no right, while the other can do no wrong.
With the trail of tears nation wide left by the Dems for the last four years I am hoping the MSM continues being their spokesmen/women. LOL
My guess is Sessions himself will be resigning soon.
To make such a public showing of partisan spite is unusual … especially if it, you know, it really just shows up yer incompetence.
If you are a nefarious industrial polluter, go to it, cause there ain’t nothing like work comin’ out of this DOJ for a good six months.
Lot of noise, I have no doubt, but nothing that does us peasants any good.
Not at all Libby. Bill and Hill were arrogantly partisan and public in there firings.
“…nothing that does us peasants any good.”
What are you expecting other than justice?
Don Surber:
Yes, well, Bill and Hillary, for all their faults, are not industrial polluters.
Someday, you are going to posit rational argument … not change the subject.
The subject remains the same. You said nothing good would come out of the DOJ…and I posted something good that came out of the DOJ.
Bill and Hill have polluted philanthropy. In fact they pollute just about everything they touch. Lying, greed and deceit will do that.
The industrial folks you condemn at the drop of a hat have contributed to society much more than they have incidentally done damage, including R&D that solves pollution problems.
Hopefully one day you will learn to be less hateful and more willing to evaluate based on all of the facts rather than an emotionally based agenda driven by greedy, power hungry players and fraught with unintended (or are they?) consequences. Some of the consequences have cost people their jobs, Others cause ridiculously high prices for services and goods. Still others have been suffering and deadly…banning DDT for instance.
Liberals are like cranky three-year-olds, demanding as he77 and totally irrational in their demands.
No, Tina … you changed the subject. The subject was what good is an understaffed DOJ gonna do us peasants. As Bill and Hils no longer work for us, they are in no way pertinent.
On November 30th, Donald Trump personally asked Preet Bharara to stick around during the new administration. Jeff Sessions also asked that Preet stay on.
https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/30/nyregion/preet-bharara-says-he-will-stay-on-as-us-attorney-under-trump.html
Preet is well known for his non partisan prosecution of corrupt Politicians. Party did not matter, he put them in jail.
I wonder how many NY cases Trump just helped get off….
I suspect we will uncover them soon.
Interesting thing though
Sean Hannity (Trumps FAV) used his Fox News show Thursday night to urge Trump to fire any holdovers from the Barack Obama era.
The next morning, Trump’s Attorney General Jeff Sessions abruptly fired Bharara and forty-five of his colleagues, in a reckless move which left the DOJ with far too few remaining attorneys and no replacements ready to go.
Trump reacts to media and they use it to control him. Last Trump idiot tweet was after reading Breibart.
Now what could be any possible reason why Hannity (who knows Trump) and that he is watching his show…. Do this?
Preet Bharara was investigating Hannity’s own network Fox
corruption is All these parties have.
Can not wait for more.
How much has Trumps golf and new york wife cost us so far? More than 8 yrs of Obama?
Both the GOP and DNC need to go.
Then what?
Add Preet was asked to check into Trumps violation of the emolument’s clause in the Constitution.
Wall Street is happy, no doubt he was one of the only ones left who would prosecute white collar crimes.
Conservatives should be proud. They have exceeded the Clinton Corruption.
Congrats! But never fear corrupt wall street dems will get ya! They will become king of corruption again!
Judge and jury without evidence or a trial?
Dewey if this is an example of the justice you would give us in that brave new world you imagine forget it.
Libby: “The subject was what good is an understaffed DOJ gonna do us peasants.”
Libby’s original “subject”: “…there ain’t nothing like work comin’ out of this DOJ for a good six months. Lot of noise, I have no doubt, but nothing that does us peasants any good.”
Sorry no, the subject was “work” coming out of the DOJ that would do you peasants any good.
My response was to show you work coming out of the DOJ that does all of us some good! The actual law being upheld is just one of the benefits!
This makes no sense.
