For a very long time the left has operated under the delusion that their hate speech was the same conservatives political criticism. Because they have conflated two diametrically opposed subjects, I’m going to try to explain the difference so they see how guilty they are of promoting hate speech and division.
Valid political criticism has an objective or subject, i.e. taxes, border control, military, healthcare, etc., that is being opposed. For example, “The president is spreading a false narrative about the Benghazi incident!” This is a reasonable opposition and the correct use of the 1st Amendment.
Hate speech goes like this, “You’re the presi-dunce, but you’re turning into a real prick-tator. Sir, you attract more skinheads than free Rogaine. You have more people marching against you than cancer. You talk like a sign-language gorilla that got hit in the head.” Stephen Colbert 5/1/2017
Valid criticism is saying, “Obama’s economic policies are suppressing economic growth, costing us jobs and forcing businesses into bankruptcy.”
Hate speech is making a homophobic slur in order to degrade and mock the President of the United States, “The only thing your mouth is good for is Vladimir Putin’s cock holster.” Stephen Colbert 5/1/2017
The left has been guilty of using hate speech for decades and they’re becoming increasingly more obnoxious and hypocritical about it. Colbert’s comments as noted above are unacceptable in a civil society. It lowers the bar for decency and that damages us. For that, he’s a despicable human being and I hope his viewers drop him. That is not hate speech, it’s an opinion based on facts. Are we clear now?
Colbert’s potty mouth was a great example of not only hate speech, but totally inappropriate comments on the public airways. Now if someone had said something like that about Obumble, the LunaticLeft would be in full hue and cry.
Funny how accusations of hate speech and racism always seem to pop up by the Lefties whenever they can’t argue a topic on its merits . . . .

Libby, thank you for mentioning this “Ape in heels” slur. That is hate speech in my book! I’m curious, what national leader of the GOP said that terrible remark anyway? They should be rebuked. Wait a second, I just found out. According to the news this person was not a GOP party leader or a party anything. She was a minor business functionary (1) in county government. She posted the ugly remark on Facebook. Whoa… Facebook? Hardly the grand pulpit Colbert has, eh? Anyway, she was soon suspended from her job for 6 weeks without pay! She was punished for her free speech, even though we find it hateful, I also find that extreme. Colbert said far worse and used his national broadcast to do it and he’s received NO punishment. He did receive a lot of cheers and accolades from the left, but not much else. Comparing the two, how is that fair? You liberals sure have a funny sense of proportion. Sure glad you brought it up.

Jack, how do you define “hate speech?”
Typically hate speech is defined by the left, and by several European governments, as as speech that targets a specific group based on an immutable trait. Some lefties go as far as saying that we need to have hate speech laws like they do in some European countries, but those people are idiots who don’t understand the first amendment.
Broadening the term to include insulting language against an individual, motivated by that individual’s conduct/behavior, seems to go too far for me.
You left out the worst part of Colbert’s speech–understandably–which I agree was hateful. I’m not sure I’d call it “homophobic,” but I’ve seen some gay people claim it was, and they’d know better than me. “Pricktator” was also unnecessary and hateful.
The rest are nowhere even close to hate speech. If “Presi-dunce” offends you, you are, to quote the alt-right, a triggered snowflake. And this is simply funny:

Finally, your framing suggests that only liberals engage in hate speech and conservatives always use reasoned dialogue, which…no. You know that’s not the case.

Let me be clear: NEVER in my life have I ever believed that hate speech was generated only by the left. C’mon, that is patently absurd. However, it’s my opinion that the left’s mendacity, mocking, ridiculing and insulting have been perfected to levels never attained by the right. They are they reigning champions of specious provocation! Maybe this is because of a complicit MS media with all their creative literary champs? Whatever it is, the left is hands down better at it than the right, that much I truly believe.
Jack, I did not mean to put words in your mouth. You chose to use only examples of conservative speech in your examples of “valid political criticism,” and only examples of liberal speech in your examples of “hate speech;” but thank you for clarifying.
I do agree that Colbert’s “cock holster” remark was over the line and hateful, but I don’t think it was “hate speech.”
