President Obama Announces Plans to Curb Gun Violence

by Jack

President Obama announced today, ”This time, the words need to lead to action, (unlike his previous promises).” President Obama set a January deadline for the recommendations.” VP Joe Biden to head the new committee.

At the emotional height just days after the shootings, fully 57% of America said they wanted assault weapons to be banned and this was the polling the president needed to take action on more gun control laws. As a result, before the committee has even been formed President Obama is pressing forward with his own plan and that involves pressuring Congress to reinstate an assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. This is despite the fact that Connecticut already had a strict assault weapons ban. But, facts and logic at this point seems to make little difference, when actions is demanded.

He also called for stricter background checks for people who seek to purchase weapons and limited high capacity clips, both of which Connecticut already had in place prior to the school shooting in Newtown. The purchaser of the weapons in the Sandy Hook School shooting was 100% legal and could have passed a background check in any state, but the owner of the guns was murdered and her guns were used illegally.

Obviously politics being what they are, the president was under pressure to do something! He’s obliged to give the appearance that he has a handle on the problem and that he is now acting quickly in the best interest of the country! This tough talk about banning certain guns will no doubt help placate many of the uninformed, the over-emotional, the non-gun owners and the stupid voters. Obama’s actions on behalf of this majority of Americans will go a long way to give them that false sense of security at a time when they needed it the most. It’s a exactly the kind of political move you could expect from his brand of politics.

Let’s hope this goes better than the war on drugs, but I have no reason to believe it will.
I think we headed for more disarming of the good guys, just like always. When guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns…will we never learn from history?

United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit

    Si vis pacem, para bellum
    – H/t The Smallest Minority viz Judge Alex Kozinski dissenting in Silveira v. Lockyear:

The majority falls prey to the delusion—popular in some circles—that ordinary people are too careless and stupid to own guns, and we would be far better off leaving all weapons in the hands of professionals on the government payroll. But the simple truth — born of experience — is that tyranny thrives best where government need not fear the wrath of an armed people. Our own sorry history bears this out: Disarmament was the tool of choice for subjugating both slaves and free blacks in the South.

All too many of the other great tragedies of history — Stalin’s atrocities, the killing fields of Cambodia, the Holocaust, to name but a few—were perpetrated by armed troops against unarmed populations. Many could well have been avoided or mitigated, had the perpetrators known their intended victims were equipped with a rifle and twenty bullets apiece, as the Militia Act required here. If a few hundred Jewish fighters in the Warsaw Ghetto could hold off the Wehrmacht for almost a month with only a handful of weapons, six million Jews armed with rifles could not so easily have been herded into cattle cars.

My excellent colleagues have forgotten these bitter lessons of history. The prospect of tyranny may not grab the headlines the way vivid stories of gun crime routinely do. But few saw the Third Reich coming until it was too late. The Second Amendment is a doomsday provision, one designed for those exceptionally rare circumstances where all other rights have failed — where the government refuses to stand for reelection and silences those who protest; where courts have lost the courage to oppose, or can find no one to enforce their decrees. However improbable these contingencies may seem today, facing them unprepared is a mistake a free people get to make only once.

Here’s another great endorsement for gun control…the Chinese government’s official news agency has demanded that the US government act. This is the government spawned from the communist People’s Republic of China whose revolution led by Mao Zedong managed to kill an estimated 40-70 million people through starvation, executions, and re-education camps. China is pro Obama and Democrats and anti Republicans and NRA. With friends like these how can America under Obama go wrong?

A mental health professional should be able to simply contact the Dept. of Justice and notify them that (insert name of patient) is deemed unsuitable for the ownership of firearms and this should go right on on his rap sheet immediately. This would show up anytime the mentally ill person tries to buy a firearm. If we can do it for checking for felons, we can do it for mental patients.

Jack I think our friends on the left are looking for risk free solutions and a tragedy free society. It will never happen but going for it makes them feel so…superior? Caring? Compassionate? Thoughtful?

“Tell the American people never to lose their guns. As long as they keep their guns in their hands, what happened here will never happen there.” – 1990, a student from Beijing, China, describes the last words of her parents, killed at Tiananmen Square

We must do what we can to ensure that criminals and the mentally ill do not have access to guns. Law abiding Americans actually have a duty and responsibility to own and know how to competently and responsibly use them.

Sadly President Obama has no plans for guns other than deprive Americans of their right to posses them. He has stated prior that in his second term he will have more latitude in doing so, and will use Newtown to his advantage. Newtown killings were horrible, the person who did them was a sick person and his mother knew it, and because of that she appears to be an irresponsible gun owner, and is as much to blame for the tragedy that befell everyone in Newtown as her son. The resulting anger from the rest of America needs to channeled in responsible gun ownership, and please try to realize it is not the weapon, it was the person using it! Mass murders can take place without guns, sick people have no limits on what they can use to kill. RHT447 has made a excellent post about results from the absence of gun ownership, that along with Tina and Jack comment about mental heath. Behavioral health seems to be a subject spoken in silence, it needs to be recognized for the health issue it is, as well as the potential danger to society of someone not properly supervised. Government has a behavioral health program, then it’s forgotten about or even ignored and they underfund it thereby reducing any effectiveness. If we can GIVE billions to world powers that are not real allies, why can’t we fund our problems here at home? So when you hear Obama talk about what he is going to do, just stop and think about the obstacles we face with what he has done already, there are a lot of issues concerning his concepts that aren’t W’s fault!

Biden is going to head the commission? He’s never found a gun control law that he didn’t like.

However, gun owners might be OK since Biden is unable even to find Connecticut . . . . .

Gun Crime Soars in England Where Guns Are Banned:

UPDATE Correction: The data on the UK is from 2003 and it is not new as prviously written however, newer data from 2009 shows gun violence in the UK has increased by 89 percent in the past decade, making the 35 percent figure insufficient.
