Environment: Gas Better Than Electric – Free Market Better than Keynesian Collectivist Corporatism

A new study by a former electric car enthusiast suggests what we have sensed all along: “Electric cars are among the environmentally dirtiest transportation options”. The opinion is based on a broad study comparing gas driven cars to electric driven cars over the entire life of each:

Writing in the journal IEEE Spectrum, researcher Ozzie Zehner says electric cars lead to hidden environmental and health damages and are likely more harmful than gasoline cars and other transportation options.

Electric cars merely shift negative impacts from one place to another, he wrote, and “most electric-car assessments analyze only the charging of the car. This is an important factor indeed. But a more rigorous analysis would consider the environmental impacts over the vehicle’s entire life cycle, from its construction through its operation and on to its eventual retirement at the junkyard.”

Will this good idea go the way of the Edsel? Collectors take note.

Maybe the hydrogen car will fair better. They’re already being produced for the general public…in South Korea:

The first hydrogen-powered car set for mass production rolled off the assembly line this week in South Korea. The vehicle, an SUV by Hyundai called the ix35 Fuel Cell, creates only water in its exhaust.

Unfortunately the sticker price ranges from $50-$100K and won’t be available in the US. Europe, ahead of the curve, has already begun to install hydrogen fueling stations. However smart this will turn out to be for them unless they change their ways economically the new option won’t do much to clean up the air. Who can afford the sticker price without a job?

America isn’t any better off. Under the leadership of Barack Obama we are stuck in an unfriendly business environment that discourages entrepreneurs and investors and stifles strong growth. We are also becoming a nation of poor people suffering under high unemployment, wages that continue to fall, and prices for necessary goods and services going up, up, up. On July 1st California added a 3.5 cent a gallon gasoline tax…so our budgets just took another hit. Healthcare and healthcare insurance costs will increase dramatically next year under Obamacare. Ugh…we’re walking in sludge and losing the battle to keep up!

Wake up Americans…both the environment, and the people, would be much better off in a free market environment…but don’t expect the Obama, most Democrats, and Republican Rhino’s to give us the relief we need any time soon.
