“1000 Children Fleeing Violent Honduras Heading to Violent Chicago”

Based on reporting by Chicago Tribune staff, there were 440 homicides in Chicago in 2013, down from the 500 counted by the FBI in 2012. So far this year, 223 people have been killed by the Tribune’s count, including an 11-year-old girl shot by a stray bullet at a sleepover with friends.

U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.), an amnesty advocate who is pressing President Obama to stop deportations for most illegal aliens in the U.S., says he’s proud that Chicago is leading by example in “welcoming migrant children and working with them as their cases are resolved.”

The essence of that Fantasy Island” photo you posted recently, Jack, becomes more realistic by the hour!

PLEASE…can we begin the return of adults to the stage; we desperately need order restored to our nation and its various departments!

I’ll bet after being in Chicago they’ll want to go back home.

Here is one of the comments.

“Sad but not surprising how every poster missed the larger point of this protest. It’s not about Obama miraculously making people stop shooting each other. It’s about HIS OPEN PREFERENCE AND DEFERENCE TO ILLEGAL ALIENS OVER BORN AND BRED BLACK AMERICANS. WHERE IS HIS 3 BILLION DOLLAR BILL FOR BLACK MEN IN TROUBLE??? WHY IS HE ASKING TAXPAYERS FOR 3 BILLION DOLLARS TO TAKE CARE OF ILLEGAL ALIENS??? Do any of you recall how dismissive he was back in the 08 campaign when he was asked about illegals taking jobs normally done by Blacks? Look it up. He essentially denied that reality and told Blacks to “get over it.” It was as insulting as his “a rising tide lifts all boats” answer when asked about the disproportionate unemployment among Black men. YET PEOPLE LIKE YOU POSTERS SWEPT THAT UNDER THE RUG TOO. There is “nothing” he–the most powerful man in the world–could possibly do for Blacks…BUT HE CATERS TO ILLEGALS AND GAYS AND JEWS IN FRONT OF YOUR FACES AND YOU PRETEND NOT TO NOTICE.”

Wait a minute. I thought Obama was a dirty Jew-hater who hates Netanyahu and loves Hamas? And now you say he’s “catering to Jews?” Which is it, Peggy?

Rep. Steve King Reveals Attitudes About DREAMers During Heated Confrontation

    by Chris

Representative Steve King (R-Iowa) is a unique voice in the immigration debate. Recently, he’s gained attention for claiming that America’s borders were established by God, comparing immigrants to dogs, and stating that for every 1 valedictorian supported by the Dream Act there are 100 “drug smugglers” with “calves the size of cantaloupes” who are protected by the act–an utterly ridiculous charge, since criminals are not eligible for the DREAM Act.

But that’s just rhetoric, right? Certainly it doesn’t indicate that King lacks compassion for immigrant children. That’s just a liberal talking point, meant to smear people concerned about our nation’s laws. Surely Rep. King would be nothing but kind and compassionate toward actual undocumented immigrants who were brought into this country as children, if he were to meet one. Right?

Well, a video of King at an event in Iowa gives us our answer, and it isn’t pretty.

In the video, King is seen having lunch with Rand Paul when two DREAMers and college graduates approach him and begin questioning him about his stance on their continued residence in this country. A lot of the media attention in response to the video has focused on Rand Paul’s speedy exit upon hearing one of the activists, Erika Andiola, identify herself as a DREAMer. But Paul’s decision to book it is at least somewhat understandable when you see what comes next.

    Here’s the video:

After Andiola asks King if he would be willing to tear up her DACA card himself–thus forcing him to confront the reality of what his policies would do to real live individual people–King interrupts her, grabs her by the wrist to get her to stop talking, and tells her that she is “very good at English.” He then accuses her of misrepresenting his words (she didn’t), sarcastically asks her if she is a drug smuggler, and repeatedly asks her if she understands the language and if her ears are working. (King made similar derogatory remarks referencing “the language” about against a Latina Republican strategist on a recent interview with David Gregory, seen here:)

Towards the end of the interview, you can clearly hear at least one man yelling “GO HOME!” at the two college graduates who were raised in this country.

Throughout the entire exchange, King repeatedly returns to the theme of lawbreaking. He even goes as far as to accuse the two activists–one of whom is a lawyer who says he wanted to join the armed services after 9/11, but was rejected–of having no respect the law. But King never articulates what exactly he expects people who are brought to this country illegally as children to actually do. Does respect for the law mean that these kids should self-deport as soon as they are able? Should these immigrants leave their real home, the place they were raised, the country they love because of their parents’ mistakes? Why is it so offensive to King that these individuals would instead stay and fight to change the law so that kids who are raised as Americans can stay Americans?

King doesn’t seem to care about the answers to any of these questions. The activists repeatedly try to stress their accomplishments, their histories, their love for America, and their desire to serve their communities, but King refuses to engage with these people as people. Instead, he merely repeats that their continued presence in this country is a violation of “the law”–a law that King could easily vote to change. King’s argument is circular–the law shouldn’t change, because it’s the law.

King is steadfast in his refusal to consider or discuss the human ramifications of his policy preferences. It almost seems as if he doesn’t see the two people in front of him as people–his domineering attitude toward Andiola, most obvious in his decision to grab her by the wrist at the beginning of the video, demonstrates that he believes he is superior to her. Even when Andiola tells King about the reason her mother fled to the U.S.–to escape her abusive husband–King merely counters, “Why didn’t she go to the police?” When Andiola tells him that she did go to the police, and they would not help her, he blithely responds “I’m sorry you come from a lawless country,” There isn’t a flicker of sympathy in his eyes as he goes back to his blind veneration of “the law,” completely ignoring the unique experience that drove Andiola’s mother to violate the law in order to make a better life for her family in the land of the free.

Liberals are often accused of “taking things personally,” but videos like this show why that’s sometimes necessary, and how much worse the alternative is. To King, the immigration debate is abstract. It doesn’t effect him on a personal, human level, so he is blind to the concerns of those who are profoundly effected. Not only that, but he believes the people who do talk about those things are misguided and shouldn’t talk about them. He doesn’t want to hear about the accomplishments, struggles and dreams of those who are protected by DACA or the DREAM Act, because that gets in the way of his black-and-white worldview of “lawbreakers” vs. “law abiding citizens.” But sometimes laws are broken for good reason. The Founders were lawbreakers. MLK Jr. violated segregation laws. And today, millions of people flee to this country to escape violence, hunger and economic desperation. In times like these, there is a need to look at our laws and reform them in order to protect the innocent and make the best use of our country’s resources. There will always be a need to monitor our border, but certainly children who were raised in this country and have had educational success shouldn’t be punished for their parents’ violation of the law.

All Americans, whether they were born in this country or merely raised here, deserve better than this. We deserve better than the cold, sterile moralizing of politicians like Steve King, who are unaffected by the policies they support and refuse to show an ounce of empathy toward the people who are. King is clearly an extremist on immigration, and I don’t believe his views are representative of most Republicans. Some of his previous comments have already been condemned by prominent Republicans like John Beohner and Paul Ryan, and that is to their credit. But his comments do represent a significant problem for the Republican party. Perhaps that’s why Rand Paul ran away before King could start talking.

Republicans believe that they are often unfairly characterized as heartless racists who don’t have compassion for the poor and dispossessed. And certainly, labeling every Republican this way is wrong. But this perception was not created by Republicans’ political opponents; it was created by radicals like King, who is still considered a respected voice on immigration by many on the right. If Republicans truly want to broaden their appeal and confront the perception that they lack compassion, they need to start by weeding out Republicans who talk like Rep. Steve King.

    This statement:

“Towards the end of the interview, you can clearly hear at least one man yelling “GO HOME!” at the two college graduates who were raised in this country.”

Should read, “Towards the end of the video…”

Also forgive the multiple mixups of “affect” and “effect.”
