This latest incident of Asian gang violence in Chico ought to serve notice that we’re not Mayberry anymore! It began with a volley of shots in the area of Chico Nissan on Cohasset, followed by a deliberate vehicle ramming. This was followed by a pursuit, then a vehicle roll all in the scope of a few blocks. This is nuts!
In the last 12 months street violence has seen a sharp rise, from drive by shootings to stabbings. The latter (stabbings) seems to be endemic among our local bum population. Same can be said for the rise in thefts from vehicles in the downtown and miscellaneous petty thefts in the same area.
A two on one transient attack resulted in a homicide just a few weeks ago… in the parking lot of the downtown 7-11.
During the Great Recession Chico suffered more than most because of air-head liberals on the city council that overspent. When the recession hit the city coffers were virtually bone-dry. And at the recession’s peak we were a breath away from being bankrupt. This debacle forced major cuts to city services and lay-offs, including many in public safety. A series of connected events followed, like the elimination of the Chico Gang Unit.
The gang unit officers were sent back into a short-staffed patrol division just to cover the bare essentials of city policing. And what followed? Well, the headlines are full of what happened. We’re seeing the results in more violent crime, right on down to a proliferation of drugs and prostitution, on a scale never seen before. Speaking of prostitution… the word is the women transients use Craigslist to solicit sex for money, but to my knowledge no arrests have ever been made. There have also been rumors of at least two fixed sites for prostitution, maybe more, and those locations will be published here, if and when, they become known.
Have you noticed the change in Chico? Please let us know your experiences.
Are you trying to tell us that cops stop crime? How dim are we supposed to be? Cops clean up the mess … occasionally arrest the miscreants, but they don’t prevent diddly.
If these gang-bangers had been educated toward gainful employment … and had gainful employment, they would not be careening around town shooting at each other. (Well, not so many of them, anyway.)
But they have not been educated, and they are not employed. This is how you prevent crime.
And I’m going to let you get away with that cheesy attempt to conflate the bums and bangers only because the solution to both problems is identical.
Libby, you make a good point, and it’s one that I accidently overlooked. There is no doubt in my mind, and apparently yours too, that a large portion of gang activity in CA and the arrival of so many out of state transients, can be tied to failed economic policies.
Certainly the failure of our education system plays a part in the new crime problems too.
I see all this as mostly President Obama’s failed economic policies and misspending and education bungling. Arguably education has been severely hurt in CA by irresponsible local liberal policies involving in some measure lack of school choice, lack of vouchers, too strong teacher unions, too liberal tenure policies, etc. This all intersects eventually with our all democrat state legislature and governor.
Thank you Libby helping us focus on where the blame where it belongs, we are in full agreement with you!
Ref post 1: “But they have not been educated, and they are not employed. This is how you prevent crime”.
Maybe its about time you study the results and educate yourself about growing crime conditions, as we readily cut police budgets and expand government largest in this area, I must add this about education and employment, yes its necessary, and needs to be effective, BUT….
” you can lead a horse to water, but you can not make it drink!”
…. with all the money spent on those issues of assisting the poor or even providing a free comfortable life style for the aimless able bodied bums that exist in todays society, most all those programs have been less than successful, and waste of most the tax dollars that support them as well as bloat the Government!
And instead of retiring those failed policies you want more?…..sigh!
Harold … I feel your pain. But you don’t have a better answer.
So we’re just going to keep plugging away at this social service and education thing.
Libby: “you don’t have a better answer”
Sure we do but it will take some time and the will of the people.
1. Vouchers for parents with kids in bad schools. In fact vouchers for every parent would be a better choice. Our schools should never take for granted that they are the only choice any parent has.
2. More Power to Teachers & Principle to deal with rowdy, disruptive students.
3. Schools for Problem Students to include a boot camp atmosphere and approach with barracks and the whole nine yards. We could recruit military vets to be the teachers with a bit of training. Quontset Huts will do nicely for the barracks. Graduates will have an opportunity to enroll in the military at graduation if they keep a clean record and graduate to help motivate them further. Others will be on track to go to a trade school.
3. Discourage transients by discouraging begging. a. Create a local misdemeanor law with a fine for anyone caught offering cash to grifters and bums. b. Post a prominent sign at all entrances to the city that it’s against the law to beg or camp in local parks.
4. Change mental health laws so that the mentally ill can be placed in hospitals again. Create an interview process for transients to determine mental health status.
5. Determine status of (non-mental) transients and help those willing to work to improve; others have to move on.
6. Never vote radical progressives to office again!
7. Elect smarter representatives to all levels of government who know how to create an atmosphere for vibrancy in the economy and JOBS!
8. Reaffirm commitment to values, family, and country.
9. Teach Economics in our schools
10. Educate kids about their prime learning and earning years…so many are wasting their youth!
Ooops, gotta run…but its a start!
1. Vouchers = racial and economic discrimination.
2. No argument … but this does not deal with the bums extant.
3. No argument … but this does not deal with the bums extant.
4. So … they should starve? This does not deal with the bums extant.
5. So … you have facilities funded to receive these people? Spiffy. Tell us all about it.
6. Sorry, but until you actually make some attempt to deal with ANY of this … progressives are all there is.
7. No argument. Now go have a chat with the folk who have returned that flaming ignoramus, Michelle Bachmann, to the Congress … how many times?
8. Blather.
9. Whose … exactly?
10. And your campaign to repair the effects of Prop 13 will begin exactly … when?
Libby: “Vouchers = racial and economic discrimination.”
Well that’s the BS line the liberals that back teachers unions and tenure over the parents of kids stuck in really bad schools. But if you want to avoid the monstrous claim then give power to ALL Americans by giving vouchers to All parents (students) so they can spend their “fair share” of school dollars as they see fit.
“4. So … they should starve? This does not deal with the bums extant.”
You are working for lawyers now!
You and I both know that those who will not help themselves or accept help are likely on a path to their own demise. If they don’t want to starve to death they will seek help. It is, as Al- Anon would tell you, not helpful to save a dysfunctional person by saving them from facing their problems. Hunger is a great motivator…yes “let them starve.”
5. “So … you have facilities funded to receive these people? Spiffy. Tell us all about it.”
Yes we do. A number of them. Homeless shelter Directory:
Sabbath House
530.345-2640
1.17 miles from city center chico
Chico, CA 95928
Torres Community Shelter
530 891-9048
1.95 miles from city center chico
Chico, CA 95928
More listed here, including the Salvation Army, The Jesus Center, and Youth for Change.
You knew that.
“6. Sorry, but until you actually make some attempt to deal with ANY of this … progressives are all there is.”
Exactly wrong and heres why: 1. These shelters do not disappear when republicans hold office, and, 2. when republicans hold office the economy and the local budget is better managed. Since the people have more disposable income under Republicans, they have more to give to charity…well, they do if they are republican or any person of meager means.
“Now go have a chat with the folk who have returned that flaming ignoramus, Michelle Bachmann, to the Congress … how many times?”
Snarky! How about you remove dim bulbs Boxer and Nancy, ” we have to pass it to find out what’s in it,” Pelosi. Feinstein is a tad smarter but she needs to go as well. (You really didn’t think you could escape the snark, did you?)
“8. Blather”
Sure, let it be known that sixties progressive, Libby, doesn’t support values or the family like the President she, and a bunch of young people elected do:
“Whose … exactly?”
Interesting that you asked. Unlike the progressive left, conservatives are in favor of broad treatment of subject in teaching. Students shouldn’t be indoctrinated, as liberals in education have done for decades now, they should be educated. I would teach all popular theories and let them decide what they think as they move forward into work.
“10. And your campaign to repair the effects of Prop 13 will begin exactly … when? ”
That would be stupid, Libby! And if we did number nine adequately, tomorrows youth would know it!
We’ve had quite enough of democrats stealing the cash that empowers the middle class so they can waste and spend “other people’s money,” instead of earning and spending their own!
Tina, I really enjoy your writing… maybe it will reach some readers, but Libby is walled off in her own little progressive world.
