For over a decade Post Scripts has existed for free thinkers. You folks come here for one basic reason, you love to think, you love knowledge and exploring new thoughts and ideas. There is no end of that here, and we can guarantee that some subjects will tick you off, they will challenge your beliefs, and some will reinforce them, but it’s all good, because this is about thinking and of course being true to our “core values.”
If you are not afraid of being challenged on what you believe, its probably because you are comfortable with your core values. These are your most personal values. However, most people never stop to think about exactly what are our core values, they just sort of instinctively go with what feels right at the moment. Ag3 has a lot to do with our values. People at 20 years of age are far less likely to know their true values than say someone at 50. Living life does that – age brings about wisdom (er,most of the time).
When we’re just starting out in life we tend to make a lot of mistakes, I know I sure have! It’s because we’re shooting from the hip, absent employing our core values when knowing them makes for better decisions. A reward unto itself. Now that we are older…we’re taking aim and hitting our values target (most of the time). So, for the sake of trying a little mental experiment, why don’t you take a look at the following list of core values, then pair them down to what matters most to y-o-u. These will be the kind of values you would probably risk your life to keep.
Click here and once at the site, click on “core values.” You can use this list to help you find your values. Just check off what works for you, and don’t worry about the count the first time. In my first go around I checked about 50. Then I had to think what was overlapping. I removed the duplicates, then I had to look up the definition of a few and that helped me zero in better. And finally I prioritized my list down to my final top 10 core values. I now keep it as a reference whenever I have a big decision to make. Why bother to do this? Again, because you’ll find its very helpful to decision making. This experiment will give you peace of mind knowing when you made the big decision… you stayed true to your values. That’s worth a few minutes of your time, right?
Okay, one last helper, when defining your core values (confidentially and only for yourself) think of what you would like people to say about you at your funeral. That’s pretty close to defining our core values. Have fun, but, just a word of caution, never share all your core values with other people. It’s like giving them the combination to your safe. This is just for you. However, if you want to discuss a couple of your core values that’s great, no harm in that. Could be very helpful to defining what you believe.
