Thank you for clarifying the rules regarding libel.

Chris I just want you to know that we respect differing opinions, even if we reserve the right to offer a rebuttal to said opinions, its of course what we do. As you know from history, political commentary is often passion driven and we try to weigh that against free speech and strike some sort of fair and responsible balance. Trust me when I say…it ain’t easy!

There is a historian in Chico who loves to tell the story of a local politician who pushed a political rival down a flight of stairs here in Chico over a hundred years ago. There’s really nothing new under the sun and politics has been heated for a long time. Still, if I ever get out of line Jack don’t hesitate to call me on it. I usually come back and apologize after I’ve cooled off!

Speaking of historians, I still deeply miss Mike Hamilton who passed in 2014. Mike was a colorful, passionate, and sometimes reckless sort of guy who once interrupted a thief stealing from The Sierra Market on Park Avenue and got his head bashed in by a skateboard as the result. (His assailant/thief was later brought to justice; Mike suffered some major head trauma.)

Bigger than life, and balls to the walls, when Mike first moved to the North State he lived in a tent, in snow country, for over a year. Besides being a mountain man and historian, he was also a gifted and skilled carpenter.

I listened to every one of Mike’s 6am Sunday history programs on KPAY 1060 AM since 1987 and after the change of ownership and move to 1290 AM.

One unfortunate Saturday night Mike had an extended drinking and billiards session with a visiting long time friend. I listened to the resulting debacle on his 6am Sunday morning program. It was excruciating. I almost drove to the station to bring him some reading glasses and stand in for a bit, but by the time I got dressed and organized it was really too late.

That was the sad end of Mike’s “history dude” incarnation on KPAY but he persevered and went on the be The History Dude on KHSL channel 12 television. I was soon tuning in to every KHSL new news broadcast just to make sure I didn’t miss a history a production from Mike.

Mike also wrote book of history on Chico and the North State which was sold locally.

Rest in peace, Michael Dennis Hamilton, you had more fans and friends than you ever knew.
