Paul Ryan Sworn In as New House Speaker

Paul RyanPosted by Tina

After much ado Paul Ryan won the votes to become the 54th Speaker of the House beating Nancy Pelosi 236-184. Eight conservative members cast their votes for Rep. Daniel Webster, R-Fla.

Paul Ryan vowed to restore the House to normal function…no more back room deals. If anyone could deliver on that I’d be surprised but I suppose it doesn’t hurt to keep the idea alive. Ryan hit all the right talking points, for this conservative, reminding the House that they serve the people and that laws should empower the people not government.

Ryan’s challenge was articulated perfectly in an article this morning by Alan Fram of the Associated Press:

Ryan’s ascension was coming as Congress neared completion of a bipartisan accord to avert a jarring federal default next week and likely prevent a December government shutdown by setting spending levels for the next two years.

The House approved the bill Wednesday 266-167, with final Senate passage on track in a few days, despite opposition from conservatives including senators seeking the GOP presidential nomination.

The budget vote underscored Ryan’s challenge in leading Republicans who often have scant interest in compromise, especially with a GOP presidential contest dominated by candidates who vilify Washington insiders. Republicans opposed the budget deal by 167-79, but Democrats supported it unanimously.

Republicans have scant interest in compromise?

Why do we never hear that Democrats have scant interest in compromise?

When have Democrats ever really compromised or cooperated with Republicans on anything? Democrats play to win…too bad they don’t have the same tenacity for fighting our Islamic enemies. Too bad they don’t have the same tenacity to work for ALL of the people instead of pitting groups against each other.

Paul Ryan will have an enormous challenge ahead in getting the radical Democrats to compromise. As we saw on stage last night in the so-called debate, Paul Ryan will also be challenged by a left wing media cabal that will be out to destroy his speaker-ship and Republican proposals.

I wish him well. Our nation depends on his success.

“Why do we never hear that Democrats have scant interest in compromise? ”

Probably because your idea of compromise is capitulation, which you’re not going to get. The budget bill was a compromise, in which your “Freedom Caucus” refused to participate.

Thank goodness there are still a few Republicans left in the House who can function in an emotional range beyond a two-year-old’s.

  2. Tina says:

Two year olds? Ha! Libby I think you have your parties mixed up. The liberal agenda has marched forward for seventy years. there’s nothing worse than a two year old bully! It took a lot of Republicans “compromising” to get that agenda accomplished.

Democrats have worked with Republicans on occasion as Tip O’Neill did with Reagan and Clinton with Gingrich.

I was asking about the media. The media never points to a lack of compromise on the part of Democrats. It’s ridiculous. (I don’t expect the Democrats to cooperate with the majority party in the House (Republican). The radicals that run your party now are too arrogant. I hope I’m wrong.

Pelosi wrote the ACA behind closed doors leaving out moderate Democrats and Republicans. Only the most extreme elements were allowed to fashion the law. That’s not radical? That’s not the result of a fringe radical group taking the position “my way or the highway?” Capitulation? The Republicans didn’t have the opportunity!

Obama has legislated from the oval office with his pen and his phone.Where’s the cooperation? Where’s the compromise?

Who among Democrats or the media calls them out on this extremism and control?

    Nobody!

It’s not like you don’t have similar groups in your party. So it’s hilarious, but typical, that you place so much scorn on the Freedom Caucus.

  3. J. Soden says:

The Demwit idea of compromise was demonstrated immediately after Obumble took office and had a sit-down with leaders of both parties in Clowngress. Obumble said “I won.” to a suggestion by John McCain, and it’s been downhill ever since.

    • Tina says:

      Exactly right, J.

There was also the time when Ryan was invited to an event on the budget. He was given the impression that his opinion was being sought and welcomed. He brought his notes, prepared to meet with the new president and work in a “bipartisan fashion.” Then from the podium with news camera’s rolling Obama snubbed and dissed Ryan being particularly critical.

Obama tried to explain it away later:

President Obama told author Bob Woodward that he didn’t know Rep. Paul Ryan was going to attend at a major speech he delivered last year on spending and debt, and says in retrospect that it was “a mistake” to dress down Ryan and his budget plans to his face in that setting.

In the interview conducted July 11 — about a month before Ryan was tapped as Mitt Romney’s running mate – the president also misstated the first name of the man who is now on the opposing presidential ticket.

“I’ll go ahead and say it – I think that I was not aware when I gave that speech that Jack Ryan was going to be sitting right there,” the president told Woodward according to audio transcripts of their conversations, provided to ABC News.

“And so I did feel, in retrospect, had I known – we literally didn’t know he was going to be there until – or I didn’t know, until I arrived. I might have modified some of it so that we would leave more negotiations open, because I do think that they felt like we were trying to embarrass him,” Obama continued. “We made a mistake.”

      Un-huh.

It’s that ridiculous sense of smug superiority that gets in the way.

  4. Steve says:

Democrats see compromise only one way. You have a loaf and they want it. So they demand you fork it over. Instead, you compromise and give them 20%. Then they come back later and demand more, prompting another compromise until you have nothing. You worked for and earned the bread. All they have to do is show up with their hands out.
That is how democrats compromise every time. They never give up anything sacred to them. We couldn’t even get them to agree to cut funding to an organization that illegally sells human baby parts.
But Republicans, they just keep giving up the farm and wondering why the freedom caucus is gaining in support.
Don’t believe me? There wasn’t a single poor democrat on stage at their debate. One of the oldest, whitest, and richest line ups of candidates I’ve seen in my lifetime.

  5. Tina says:

Boy, Steve, you really nailed it on all four points. Thanks.

  6. Libby says:

“We couldn’t even get them to agree to cut funding to an organization that illegally sells human baby parts.”

No, you couldn’t ,,, but thanks for the laugh.

    • Post Scripts says:

That’s not funny Libby, unless you think its going to be funny to live in the poor house because America is flat broken and the dollar is worthless.

      • Dewey says:

Donating the tissues of aborted fetuses to research companies which use the the tissue for research does not equate to illegally selling body parts.

If you dislike something it would be wise to talk factually about the issue not repeat Right Wing fake Propaganda. That video was edited and debunked.

        • Tina says:

“Donating the tissues of aborted fetuses to research companies which use the the tissue for research does not equate to illegally selling body parts. ”

          That isn’t the issue

The claim is that abortion procedures have been altered in order to acquire intact organs and body parts for money. The matter is being investigated. It is a felony to change a procedure to ensure a heart or liver isn’t “crushed” and can be exchanged for money.

          • Chris says:

            Tina: “That isn’t the issue.”

Dewey responded to EXACTLY the issue that Steve brought up–Steve said that PP was “illegally selling human baby parts.” You told Steve that he “nailed it on all points.” Now you’re saying the claim was entirely different? That’s not intellectually honest. You were fine with Steve forwarding a bogus claim, but now that someone has called it out you’re acting like that claim wasn’t actually made? Foul.

Multiple investigations have been done and have found no evidence of illegal activity on the part of PP. The video absolutely has been debunked.

        • Tina says:

The video was edited for dissemination. It’s content was not altered.

After the left cried foul the entire video was released without editing.

The video(s) HAS NOT BEEN DEBUNKED!

  7. Libby says:

On the contrary, your irrepressible penchant for hyperbole is frequently good for a chuckle … “selling baby parts” … snort, chortle and snort.

  8. Dewey says:

I remember the congressional slogan “My Way or the Highway” Oh wait that was the Republicans!

The Caucus room meeting set a standard to Block everything the New president try’s to accomplish! The Guest List of about 15 people included Republican Reps. Eric Cantor (Va.), Kevin McCarthy (Calif.), Paul Ryan (Wis.), Pete Sessions (Texas), Jeb Hensarling (Texas), Pete Hoekstra (Mich.) and Dan Lungren (Calif.), along with Republican Sens. Jim DeMint (S.C.), Jon Kyl (Ariz.), Tom Coburn (Okla.), John Ensign (Nev.) and Bob Corker (Tenn.) Newt Gingrich, Frank Luntz. – Yep Republicans again!

I could go on and on! Who are you trying to convince yourselves?

Everything wrong in the conservative world is those radical evil Democrats! Republicans never would play games? Bottom Line the Tea Party Freedom Caucus whose major donors are the Koch Brothers are a coup.

The Republican party is drunk with greed and power. For them a game of winner take all. Current events look like a coup, not a political party. –

This coup started many decades ago. Read The powell memo 1972

    David Koch’s 1980 VP Platform:

“We urge the repeal of federal campaign finance laws, and the immediate abolition of the despotic Federal Election Commission.”

“We favor the abolition of Medicare and Medicaid programs.”

“We oppose any compulsory insurance or tax-supported plan to provide health services, including those which finance abortion services.”

“We also favor the deregulation of the medical insurance industry.”

“We favor the repeal of the fraudulent, virtually bankrupt, and increasingly oppressive Social Security system. Pending that repeal, participation in Social Security should be made voluntary.”

“We propose the abolition of the governmental Postal Service. The present system, in addition to being inefficient, encourages governmental surveillance of private correspondence. Pending abolition, we call for an end to the monopoly system and for allowing free competition in all aspects of postal service.”

“We oppose all personal and corporate income taxation, including capital gains taxes.”

“We support the eventual repeal of all taxation.”

“As an interim measure, all criminal and civil sanctions against tax evasion should be terminated immediately.”

“We support repeal of all law which impede the ability of any person to find employment, such as minimum wage laws.”

“We advocate the complete separation of education and State. Government schools lead to the indoctrination of children and interfere with the free choice of individuals. Government ownership, operation, regulation, and subsidy of schools and colleges should be ended.”

“We condemn compulsory education laws … and we call for the immediate repeal of such laws.”

“We support the repeal of all taxes on the income or property of private schools, whether profit or non-profit.”

“We support the abolition of the Environmental Protection Agency.”

“We support abolition of the Department of Energy.”

“We call for the dissolution of all government agencies concerned with transportation, including the Department of Transportation.”

“We demand the return of America’s railroad system to private ownership. We call for the privatization of the public roads and national highway system.”

“We specifically oppose laws requiring an individual to buy or use so-called “self-protection” equipment such as safety belts, air bags, or crash helmets.”

“We advocate the abolition of the Federal Aviation Administration.”

“We advocate the abolition of the Food and Drug Administration.”

“We support an end to all subsidies for child-bearing built into our present laws, including all welfare plans and the provision of tax-supported services for children.”

“We oppose all government welfare, relief projects, and ‘aid to the poor’ programs. All these government programs are privacy-invading, paternalistic, demeaning, and inefficient. The proper source of help for such persons is the voluntary efforts of private groups and individuals.”

“We call for the privatization of the inland waterways, and of the distribution system that brings water to industry, agriculture and households.”

“We call for the repeal of the Occupational Safety and Health Act.”

“We call for the abolition of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.”

“We support the repeal of all state usury laws.”

Americans do not want a fascist country ran by the Oligarch’s as we have become.

    • Tina says:

“The Caucus room meeting set a standard to Block everything the New president try’s to accomplish! ”

Gee, like that never happened before. Democrats wouldn’t dream of acting like fascists. They would never do everything possible (or illegal) to block any idea or contribution from the opposition party. Democrats are the very soul of compromise! Yeah right.

Dewey, when are you going to learn what fascism is?

Taking steps to empower the people and shrink the size and reach of government, the conservative goal, is NOT fascist.

Government control of business is fascist. Draconian regulations are fascist. Universal healthcare is fascist. Socialism is fascism light. Communists just go ahead and seize everything in sight as a means to having power and control. Their not “nice” about taking over like the fascists are. None of these is compatible with the ideals of America…with liberty!.

The American Conservative offers a telling view of Bernie:

I asked three of my favorite Vermonters for their impressions of Sanders.

John McClaughry of Kirby, self-described “decentralist agrarian Reaganaut,” offered the harshest assessment: “I have watched Bernie in Vermont for the past 35 years, since he and his radical hippie pals took over the tiny dirt-poor town of Stannard. To his credit, Bernie has defiantly called himself a socialist from the beginning, even under pressure to ‘tone it down.’ He remains fully committed to 1960s (if not 1860s) Marxism, and every morning he sets out to advance the socialist movement and defeat its enemies.”

“His performance as mayor of Burlington was overall innovative,” McClaughry concedes, “although he still takes flak from his radical comrades for promoting a corporate redevelopment of the city’s waterfront, and for arresting his radical friends protesting at the GE armaments plant (who were trying to keep union workers from their jobs).

“On the down side, Bernie is impervious to facts. He’ll say anything to advance the movement, and he’s not technically lying. You have to know the truth before you can lie, and for Bernie the Truth is what is required to be true by Marx’s scientific theory of history.

Is there a decentralist tinct to Sanders? “Only in the sense that the left must seize control of local institutions of government to advance the movement. Ultimately all power must be centralized in the national government, to advance the movement, correct inequality of wealth, defeat the little yellow and brown people who are taking American jobs, and thwart the evil Koch Brothers.”

Rob Williams, yak-herding Champlain College professor and publisher of 2VR, has worked with Sanders “on issues of corporate control of our U.S. imperial media culture.” He admires “Bernie’s independence, his outspokenness, his impatience with bullshit.” Sanders’s “ability to ‘live and let live’ with politicians on both sides of the D.C. aisle … makes him Vermonty. Other than this, he’s a Brooklynite through and through.”

“I like his slightly unkempt and casual appearance and his uniquely compelling charisma,” says Williams. “He is easily the best ‘honest deliverer of bad news’ we have of any of our elected politicians in D.C.—climate change, Wall Street takeover, collapse of the middle class, corporate greed—and he’s been saying all this for decades.”

“On the other hand, Bernie’s unequivocal support for the Pentagon’s F-35 Burlington-based joint strike fighter baffles and infuriates me. I find his cozying up to Lockheed and Sandia Labs perplexing, and his support for Israel maddening.” (continues)

Dewey, ya silly goose, most of what’s on that list amounts to fascism…government control over every aspect of our lives (and much of our money). Big government isn’t your protector. Big government is your jailer!

The founders devised a system to protect individual freedom, freedom granted by a higher power and not any person. They gave us a system of laws to settle disputes and egregious harms.

After seventy or more years of socialist “protections” what we have is a complex regulatory system that is easily exploited and loop hole designed to protect the powerful and rich. We have more fraud and abuse of power. Socialism doesn’t make people “more equal” or “safer.” Socialism is simply a means to power over the people.

  9. Steve says:

The democrats on here are will argue their points to the end. NO. COMPROMISE. EVER.

  10. Steve says:

But keep laughing Libby. Your party is running the oldest, whitest, richest ticket we’ve seen in some time. All of the youth and diversity is on the GOP side now. Your party has abandoned the middle class and it will bite you next year at the polls. Take your pick of Trump, Carson, Cruz, or Rubio, and get used to calling them your next President. Conservatives will be working to make sure that the policies they enact right all the wrongs of the past 8 years too.

  11. Tina says:

Steve wrote: “We couldn’t even get them to agree to cut funding to an organization that illegally sells human baby parts.

Evidence that abortion procedures were altered in order to avoid crushing hearts or livers so they could the be sold is, in Steve’s and my opinion, evidence that PP is illegally selling human baby parts.

I see no evidence of foul.

The article you cited does not prove PP has done no wrong. As it clearly states right there at the top, “Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster conducted a 30-day audit of more than 300 abortions performed by Planned Parenthood in St. Louis…. St Louis isn’t necessarily indicative of the entire organization. Nor do the abortions audited represent the abortions referred to in the video.

Congress <a href="http://www.lifenews.com/2015/08/18/congress-investigates-if-planned-parenthood-is-breaking-the-law-to-sell-aborted-babies/"is asking the DOJ to look into the matter and to clarify the law for them. A portion of the letter follows:

    Dear Attorney General Lynch:

The House Judiciary Committee has launched an investigation into whether Planned Parenthood abortionists altered procedures in order to harvest the organs and body parts of aborted children. “I’d say a lot of people want liver,” an executive from Planned Parenthood stated in a video released on July 15, 2015. “And for that reason, most providers will do this case under ultrasound guidance, so they’ll know where they’re putting their forceps.” She further stated: “We’ve been very good at getting heart, lung, liver, because we know that so I’m not gonna crush that part, I’m gonna basically crush below, I’m gonna crush above, and I’m gonna see if I can get it all intact.”

New evidence suggests that this disturbing practice of altering the procedure is more than an isolated instance. In a recent video released on July 21, 2015, yet another Planned Parenthood abortionist executive stated:

Let me explain to you a little bit of a problem, which may not be a big problem, if our usual technique is suction at 10 to 12 weeks and we switch to using an IPAS [manual vacuum aspirator] or something with less suction or to increase the odds that it will come out as an intact specimen, then we’re kind of violating the protocol that says to the patient, “We’re not doing anything different in our care of you.” Now to me, that’s kind of a specious little argument and I wouldn’t object to asking Ian, who’s our surgeon who does the cases, to use an IPAS at that gestational age in order to increase the odds that he’s going to get an intact specimen.

Later in the video, when asked if she would be happy with the dollar amount per specimen suggested by the undercover investigative journalist, the Planned Parenthood abortionist executive stated: “Well, let me find out from other affiliates in California [what they] are getting and if they’re getting more, then we can discuss it then.” She continued, “But, you know, the money is not the important thing, but it has to be big enough that it’s worthwhile for me.”

At least three federal laws may be implicated by this video: 42 U.S.C. § 274e, which states that “[i]t shall be unlawful for any person to knowingly acquire, receive, or otherwise transfer any human organ for valuable consideration for use in human transplantation if the transfer affects interstate commerce”; 42 U.S.C. § 289g, which states that “[i]t shall be unlawful for any person to knowingly acquire, receive, or otherwise transfer any human fetal tissue for valuable consideration if the transfer affects interstate commerce”; and 18 U.S.C. § 1531, which prohibits partial-birth abortions.

We’ve gone over this before, Chris.
