On the same day that three police officers were ambushed and killed in Baton Rouge, a black male convenience store clerk in Miramar refused to serve a uniformed police officer. Officer Morano:
“[he] walked up to me and asked why we had arrested ‘his boy.’ The individual stated he would not ring me up and stated, ‘you know why.’ I proceeded to ask him again to ring me up and the individual again refused.” … “I asked the individual why he was refusing to ring up a police officer trying to buy a drink, to which he stated, ‘Because I don’t have to, that’s why.'”
Apparently the clerk lost his job for the episode, which indicates that at least some Americans will not tolerate militant activism that crosses the line of civility and respect.
Washington Post – Unfortunately I’ve already exceeded my access to the WaPo for the month but here’s the gist of the story:
When the officer bit into his sandwich during his lunch break Monday, he heard a crunching noise. A few moments later, blood was dripping from his mouth. Investigators with the Columbus, Ohio, police department are trying to determine whether the shards of glass in the officer’s sandwich got there accidentally or were placed intentionally by an employee at the Lincoln Cafe on East Long Street. Neither the officer nor a worker who was questioned in the incident have been identified, and no one has been charged, but police want to know whether there was malicious intent, and whether it was motivated by the officer’s badge.
A group of Dallas Police officers say they were turned away from Genghis Grill on Greenville Avenue around 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
According to a source, the officers were told by an employee that their presence may frighten other customers.
The officers left without being seated, and word began to quickly spread.
The incident comes about a week and a half after the shooting spree that killed five officers, and left departments across America deeply shaken.
Genghis Grill, through both a local manager and a public relations representative, have apologized for the incident.
One of the officers that was killed in the Dallas attack of July 7, Officer Michael Krol, was a regular at another Genghis Grill location in Dallas.
The employee who turned the officers away was fired.
If a vendor in Missouri or Indiana or wherever can refuse to serve a gay guy, why can’t a store clerk refuse to serve a cop?
He can Libby. In some enterprises the act might be cheered. Would you object?
In most cases it isn’t appreciated…every owner knows that if there’s trouble it will be the cop, or fireman, or EMT that comes to help, will even put his life on the line to help.
If there is a difference I guess it’s a personal rather than a civic choice.
It is worth noting that out of all of America the number of establishments that have refused to serve “a gay guy” are few and when they have it was out of a personal religious conviction, not hatred or revenge.
It is also worth noting that the current hatred toward cops has been built on lies, false premises, and ignorance or denial that cooperative behavior in situations involving the authorities is smart. In nearly every instance when a shooting has occurred it would never have happened had the perp simply complied with the authorities (and lived to fight his battle in court). We should be asking ourselves why young people, and in particular young blacks, have not been taught to respect authority figures.

2014, US News:
Respect for everyone’s rights and respect for authority would clear up a lot of these niggling problems.
There’s nothing niggling about any of this … as your support for a candidate who does, and will apparently continue to, plumb the depths of public incivility.

And your point is what Dewey?
Just as it has always been if this man is guilty he will be prosecuted. Cops are people. The expectation that they will always be perfect is unreasonable and frankly ignorant.
