When Trump called Kim Jong Un, “Rocket Man” the air sucked in by the left nearly caused an oxygen shortage. Soon stories of wealthy scaredy cats building bomb shelters hit the air waves…Trump was a maniac and we were all about to die a horrible! Lil Kim attempted to up the anti with Trump but in the end it turns out the US does have bigger rockets and, with Trump in the White House, the US will not hesitate to use them if provoked. (Please turn the page) Silence was soon the only sound heard from North Korea. A diplomatic olive branch was arranged and Kim’s sister appeared as a guest at the Olympics. Behind the scenes talks continued and last night it was announced that Kim wanted a meeting with Trump. The President agreed and tweeted the following as reported by Don Surber:
Kim Jong Un talked about denuclearization with the South Korean Representatives, not just a freeze. Also, no missile testing by North Korea during this period of time. Great progress being made but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached. Meeting being planned!
Former Presidents have all failed to bring North Korean leaders out of the dark ages and into the modern world. Former Presidents have used diplomacy and sanctions but in the end it was obvious lopsided posturing made for very bad deals:
Back in 1994, President Clinton prepared to confront North Korea over CIA reports it had built nuclear warheads and its subsequent threats to engulf Japan and South Korea in “a sea of fire.”
Enter self-appointed peacemaker Carter: The ex-prez scurried off to Pyongyang and negotiated a sellout deal that gave North Korea two new reactors and $5 billion in aid in return for a promise to quit seeking nukes.
Clinton embraced this appeasement as achieving “an end to the threat of nuclear proliferation on the Korean Peninsula” — with compliance verified by international inspectors. Carter wound up winning the Nobel Peace Prize for his dubious efforts.
But in 2002, the North Koreans ‘fessed up: They’d begun violating the accord on Day One. Four years later, Pyongyang detonated its first nuke.
Bush and then Obama were also ineffective in dealing with the dictator:
Bush famously named North Korea as one part of the three-part “axis of evil” with Iraq and Iran in his State of the Union speech as president in 2002.
“North Korea is a regime arming with missiles and weapons of mass destruction, while starving its citizens,” he said.
Later that year, the country confirmed what Bush said by admitting it had been secretly conducting a nuclear-weapons program for several years and proceeded to withdraw from its agreement with the Clinton administration shortly thereafter.
By 2004, U.S. officials believed North Korea had developed between two and eight nuclear weapons. … (six party talks continued) In 2007, an agreement was reached to send $400 million worth of fuel, food and other aid in exchange for North Korea shutting down its main nuclear reactor. …
(Enter Obama) … Obama sent an envoy to North Korea…asking leader Kim Jong Il to begin denuclearization talks, but his regime didn’t make any major moves toward pursuing them. … new leader Kim Jong Un agreed to halt nuclear tests in exchange for food aid (2012).
North Korea’s pursuit of nuclear weapons continued, however.
Obama’s administration put the ball in North Korea’s court by outlining conditions it required before diplomatic negotiations could occur, but Jong Un’s regime has maintained for years that its nuclear program is necessary for defense.
He went as far as to threaten the “military might” of the U.S. in 2014 as debates over true capabilities of the North continued. …
… after yet another nuclear test, Obama said the U.N. and members of the original “Six-Party Talks” would “vigorously implement” those resolutions and that there were “consequences” for North Korea’s actions. (Ya dah, ya,dah, ya dah…another red line)
Obama had demonstrated his weakness all too often.
In Trump Un discovered a different animal entirely. Here is a man he cannot bluff or shine on.
Peace through strength is the model Trump has tapped to begin negotiations. He met Un’s provocations with equal or greater might. Trump will also adhere to the policy of trust but verify. He knows Kim Jong Un is not trustworthy.
Trumps approach is reminiscent of Reagan with the USSR and Nixon with China. Both presidents were able to alter the course of history in talks with tyrannical leaders. There’s a real possibility that Trump will be successful in negotiating with Un. But Un will have to do more than make empty promises if he wants to visit with former American basketball player, Dennis Rodman on American soil in the future. There’s a chance that Ung secretly wants to engage in the modern free world. He won’t soon allow his people to live out from under his control but a NK engaging more like China would be a good thing, yes? Time will tell.
The moron media presstitutes are in hysterics. And the rest of the country is laughing at their hysteria.
Let’s not count our chickens before they hatch since there are conditions upon which NK has to do before any meeting takes place.
J I have no expectations. Kim Jong Un has shown he can’t be trusted. He will have to legitimately meet the conditions the Trump team demands before concessions are made.
He does have a few bargaining chips.
Rocket man is a cold blooded murderer and an egomaniac. There is no way he can be trusted, so I agree with you. My concern is he will walk out on Trump at the bargaining table in an effort to humiliate Trump. That would be a huge mistake. Could the dogs of war be far behind that one? I think not.
I could be called optimistic, I really think the flip side of Kim Jong Un walking out is staying and agreeing to things he really doesn’t need, and compromise about others just to save face.
Yes he is a egomaniac , but with no national income to speak of, he may be awaking to the reality of a collapse of his empire.
Recent reports indicate his country is on the verge of bankruptcy, and he needs funds to build those rockets, maintain a army, continue to live in luxury, but who is going to carry him on credit for those materials and run the risk sanctions on themselves as well?.
Un is not readily willing to talk , but he is realizing it’s in his interest in world politics, if only to try to preserve his empire for his needs and save face from a national collapse.
What if Trump walks out?
The spirit of cordiality marks the opening of any summit arranged between enemies. It could just as easily be Trump that challenges the insincerity of Rocket Man by ending negotiations.
From Wikipedia: “The Reykjavík Summit was a summit meeting between U.S. President Ronald Reagan and General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union Mikhail Gorbachev, held in Hofdi in Reykjavík, on 11–12 October 1986. The talks collapsed at the last minute (Reagan walked out), but the progress that had been achieved eventually resulted in the 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty between the United States and the Soviet Union.”
The cease fire with Hussein resulted in UN resolutions and inspections that made them and the free world look like complete idiots. Tyrants can’t imagine such. When they want something they
are relentless and ruthless. they enjoy playig the weak like fiddles.
Un already knows he’s dealing with a man who will not be intimidated and who’s resolve is solid. Yes, Un acts like a maniac, he does things so evil that it shatters all notions of common sense and decency. But he is also human who wants to live and continue as his nation’s tyrannical ruler.
Chinese and Japanese leaders are backing the US along with South Korean leaders to make this happen. Where it goes depends entirely on him.
Harold, like you, I am cautiously optimistic.
And Jack, your position is in the back of everyone’s mind.
The left is going nuts in exactly the same fashion as they did with Reagan. At the bottom of their demeaning remarks is bitterness and covetousness. They feature themselves as more capable and they can’t stand the thought that if this works out well it will be Trump and his administration (the other party) that gets the credit.
How can you all be so silly as to take any of this seriously. The Donald’s invite came from an emissary from South Korea, after the two sides had done their initial scoping out of positions, and I am thrilled that Trump’s bloviating has seemingly made them realize that they’d better get to work on a reconciliation themselves, but I would give a very great deal to know what was the “back and forth” that spawned the invite:
Both: “How we gonna keep the jackass quiet while we pursue this business?”
Kim: “I wouldn’t mind seeing Disney World again.”
Moon: “It isn’t what it was … but if you’re game, let’s see if he bites.”
Me thrilled, but also a little embarrassed. Out big deal maker is actually a simple-minded patsy, but hell, anything that keeps him harmlessly occupied for the rest of the year is fine by me.
