Trump Agrees to Meet with Kim Jong Un

When Trump called Kim Jong Un, “Rocket Man” the air sucked in by the left nearly caused an oxygen shortage. Soon stories of wealthy scaredy cats building bomb shelters hit the air waves…Trump was a maniac and we were all about to die a horrible! Lil Kim attempted to up the anti with Trump but in the end it turns out the US does have bigger rockets and, with Trump in the White House, the US will not hesitate to use them if provoked. (Please turn the page) Silence was soon the only sound heard from North Korea. A diplomatic olive branch was arranged and Kim’s sister appeared as a guest at the Olympics. Behind the scenes talks continued and last night it was announced that Kim wanted a meeting with Trump. The President agreed and tweeted the following as reported by Don Surber:

Kim Jong Un talked about denuclearization with the South Korean Representatives, not just a freeze. Also, no missile testing by North Korea during this period of time. Great progress being made but sanctions will remain until an agreement is reached. Meeting being planned!

Former Presidents have all failed to bring North Korean leaders out of the dark ages and into the modern world. Former Presidents have used diplomacy and sanctions but in the end it was obvious lopsided posturing made for very bad deals:

Back in 1994, President Clinton prepared to confront North Korea over CIA reports it had built nuclear warheads and its subsequent threats to engulf Japan and South Korea in “a sea of fire.”

Enter self-appointed peacemaker Carter: The ex-prez scurried off to Pyongyang and negotiated a sellout deal that gave North Korea two new reactors and $5 billion in aid in return for a promise to quit seeking nukes.

Clinton embraced this appeasement as achieving “an end to the threat of nuclear proliferation on the Korean Peninsula” — with compliance verified by international inspectors. Carter wound up winning the Nobel Peace Prize for his dubious efforts.

But in 2002, the North Koreans ‘fessed up: They’d begun violating the accord on Day One. Four years later, Pyongyang detonated its first nuke.

Bush and then Obama were also ineffective in dealing with the dictator:

Bush famously named North Korea as one part of the three-part “axis of evil” with Iraq and Iran in his State of the Union speech as president in 2002.

“North Korea is a regime arming with missiles and weapons of mass destruction, while starving its citizens,” he said.

Later that year, the country confirmed what Bush said by admitting it had been secretly conducting a nuclear-weapons program for several years and proceeded to withdraw from its agreement with the Clinton administration shortly thereafter.

By 2004, U.S. officials believed North Korea had developed between two and eight nuclear weapons. … (six party talks continued) In 2007, an agreement was reached to send $400 million worth of fuel, food and other aid in exchange for North Korea shutting down its main nuclear reactor. …

(Enter Obama) … Obama sent an envoy to North Korea…asking leader Kim Jong Il to begin denuclearization talks, but his regime didn’t make any major moves toward pursuing them. … new leader Kim Jong Un agreed to halt nuclear tests in exchange for food aid (2012).

North Korea’s pursuit of nuclear weapons continued, however.

Obama’s administration put the ball in North Korea’s court by outlining conditions it required before diplomatic negotiations could occur, but Jong Un’s regime has maintained for years that its nuclear program is necessary for defense.

He went as far as to threaten the “military might” of the U.S. in 2014 as debates over true capabilities of the North continued. …

… after yet another nuclear test, Obama said the U.N. and members of the original “Six-Party Talks” would “vigorously implement” those resolutions and that there were “consequences” for North Korea’s actions. (Ya dah, ya,dah, ya dah…another red line)

Obama had demonstrated his weakness all too often.

In Trump Un discovered a different animal entirely. Here is a man he cannot bluff or shine on.

Peace through strength is the model Trump has tapped to begin negotiations. He met Un’s provocations with equal or greater might. Trump will also adhere to the policy of trust but verify. He knows Kim Jong Un is not trustworthy.

Trumps approach is reminiscent of Reagan with the USSR and Nixon with China. Both presidents were able to alter the course of history in talks with tyrannical leaders. There’s a real possibility that Trump will be successful in negotiating with Un. But Un will have to do more than make empty promises if he wants to visit with former American basketball player, Dennis Rodman on American soil in the future. There’s a chance that Ung secretly wants to engage in the modern free world. He won’t soon allow his people to live out from under his control but a NK engaging more like China would be a good thing, yes? Time will tell.
