Written with part of my tongue planted firmly in cheek… it was only days ago when I had the misfortune (and poor judgement) to insinuate that perhaps Sarah Palin was not sharp enough for a run at the White House… and probably never would be. Of all the subjects I should never have touched, I might as well have attacked Mary of Nazareth!
Like those wascally demon-crats who were out to destroy Sarah P because they fear her…I, your humble right-wing messenger, caught some of the same kind of double barreled buck shot they got! But, hold on…I’m a capital [C] Conservative, how could my side do that to moi? So, I tried again to make my point ever so carefully, and for that I used Karl Rove’s comments on Palin because he not only asserted what I thought, but he carries impeccable GOP credentials. However, even though I acknowledged what a nice lady Mrs. P was and how she might be good for fund raising and she might help the party find it’s way out the worst slump in its history, I still got a ratta-tat-tat of strafing fire from all directions.
My tepid assertion that Mrs. Palin was not ready for prime time was shot full of holes and it felt like my tail was on fire, I had taken that much flak! And before I could say, Good Golly Miss Molly, I was spiraling out of the big blue sky where her many supporters prowl.
Wait a sec, my critics just dismissed Karl Rove as…as… a no-nothing? ( ! )
I was not content to just go away now nor was I about to coerced into the Palin Fan club. I inched forward once again, into the open, armed with a couple of excerpts from the MSM on Palin and her woes and again gunfire erupted. I was forced to duck and cover! But, not before I found a surprising source that was about to come to my rescue.
Who’s that rescuer and what the heck does he know, you may wonder? Well, for starters he’s a she and she’s a very notable conservative woman. That’s gotta be a little in my favor, afterall it’s not just a couple of men (me and Karl) ganging up on poor little Sarah again. She was Ronald Reagan’s speech writer! Oh, now that’s not just good, that has to bring her close to Sainthood in the conservative world! Before I move on, let me invoke that name again…R-o-n-a-l-d Rea-gan, said ever so slowly and that she was his speech w-r-i-t-e-r! As infomercials are fond of saying, “But, wait there’s more!!!” She took time off from her presitgious New York job without pay, just to work on George Bush’s Presidential Campaign! This is a true blue Republican folks. If you loved Bush you have to love this ardent supporter too, right? And she holds all kinds of awards and fancy schmacy diplomas for her political acumen.
You can dismiss me and my thoughts (as benign as they may be), but this lady is an authoritative member of the inner circle of the GOP and it’s actually her title I quoted above.
I was no where near as critical of Palin as she was either…please see for yourself, as you read this portion of her article, A Farewell to Harms – Palin was bad for the Republicans–and the republic. By Peggy Noonan (Wall Street Journal).
“….The party rallied round, as a party should. She went on the trail a sensation but demonstrated in the ensuing months that she was not ready to go national and in fact never would be. She was hungry, loved politics, had charm and energy, loved walking onto the stage, waving and doing the stump speech. All good. But she was not thoughtful. She was a gifted retail politician who displayed the disadvantages of being born into a point of view (in her case a form of conservatism; elsewhere and in other circumstances, it could have been a form of liberalism) and swallowing it whole: She never learned how the other sides think, or why.
CONT-
In television interviews she was out of her depth in a shallow pool. She was limited in her ability to explain and defend her positions, and sometimes in knowing them. She couldn’t say what she read because she didn’t read anything. She was utterly unconcerned by all this and seemed in fact rather proud of it: It was evidence of her authenticity. She experienced criticism as both partisan and cruel because she could see no truth in any of it. She wasn’t thoughtful enough to know she wasn’t thoughtful enough. Her presentation up to the end has been scattered, illogical, manipulative and self-referential to the point of self-reverence. “I’m not wired that way,” “I’m not a quitter,” “I’m standing up for our values.” I’m, I’m, I’m.
In another age it might not have been terrible, but here and now it was actually rather horrifying.
McCain-Palin lost. Mrs. Palin has now stepped down, but she continues to poll high among some members of the Republican base, some of whom have taken to telling themselves Palin myths.”
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN I REST MY CASE! Feel free to talk among yourselves now and if you feel inclined to change your mind, you know where to find me.
PS Want to read the whole thing? Probably not, but here’s the link anyway.
PPS And yes Libby we conservatives do disagree from time to time because it’s healthy, it proves we are still free thinkers, unlike the lockstep lefties! lol And yes, I do think Peggy was a wee bit too harsh on the lady, if that is any consolation.
