This post was inspired by Jack’s latest aircraft art of North American Aviation’s long-range, single-seat fighter and fighter-bomber, the P-51 Mustang.
At 550 mph (plus) ground speed (average pass 531.53 mph), Aviation Partners’ racing modified P-51 “Voodoo” is the fastest propeller driven aircraft on the planet.

Thanks Pie, this is absolutely incredible. I looked at the blades on that prop and they were unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The horsepower it must take to spin those up to achieve 550 mph must be enormous. Did you know that by war’s end the German’s had the ME109 doing very close to 500 mph? Ironically they achieved this by reading a an aviation book by an Englishman on the principles water and ethanol injection coupled to a greatly increased manifold pressure. His approach would more than double the horsepower, but added very little weight. The English glossed over it, but the German’s stumbled upon this break-thru technology while seeking alternative fuels because of the short supply of gasoline.
