Click on the photo to be taken to the actual graph that compares states to countries, economically speaking. It’s very well done.

thanks so much for this link! We’re studying the California economy in our social studies lessons these days. Right now we have been looking over the Fortune 500 website of the 100 top companies hq’d in California. We’ve got to about #65 and we’re moving down the list looking at these companies, what they do, and where they are located. Some only locate their corporate headquarters in CA, but then there’s businesses, like Safeway, that also DO business all over the state.

We’ve noticed, consultants outnumber other businesses, including manufacturing of any type, at least 2 – 1. And, most of the businesses we’ve looked at are located somewhere within 50 miles of the Bay. LA is the other stronghold, but more in the Bay Area. The only business located in “Northern California” is McClatchy Newspapers in Sacramento. I knew they were a big deal in Sacto, but I guess they own tv stations and other media all over California and Nevada.

I’m trying to teach my kid to do research. Computers are nice, but you must check your sources. Thanks for this info, it will be something to talk about – we’re learning all these new terms like GDP, etc.
