The Muslim Brotherhood – An Overview

From the ADL: This is a factual, historical review of the Muslim Brotherhood, much of it taken directly from the organization’s own public documents. Compare this information with the statements by our Obama Administration (see next article below) and you’ll see a huge credibility gap.

Description: A brown square frames a green circle with a white perimeter. Two swords cross inside the circle beneath a red Koran. The cover of the Koran says: “Truly, it is the Generous Koran.” The Arabic beneath the sword handles translates as “Be prepared.”

Explanation: The swords reinforce the group’s militancy and, as traditional weapons, symbolize historic Islam. They also reinforce the group’s commitment to jihad. The Koran denotes the group’s spiritual foundation. The motto, “Be prepared,” is a reference to a Koranic verse that talks of preparing to fight the enemies of God.

The Muslim Brotherhood was founded in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna, an Egyptian seeking to overthrow Egypt’s monarchy, expel western influences and establish an Islamic theocracy. Since its founding, the Muslim Brotherhood, a Sunni Islamic movement, has pursued these goals through political activity, ideological influence and acts of violence. The group became known for its extensive terrorist operations, including the failed assassination attempt of Egyptian leader Gamal Abdul Nasser. Its activities led to violent crackdowns by the governments of Egypt and Syria; it is banned in those countries.

While forced to limit its violent activity, the Muslim Brotherhood continues to have a large following throughout the Muslim world, where many of its supporters are politically active. The group has influenced many terrorist leaders – including Osama Bin Laden and Ayman al Zawahiri – and many of its members have engaged in terrorist activities.

Focus of Operations –
Headquartered in Egypt; satellite groups throughout the Muslim world

Major Attacks –

  • The Muslim Brotherhood no longer openly conducts terrorist operations; it is primarily a political organization that supports terrorism and terrorist causes. Many of its members, however, have engaged in terrorist activities and the group has spawned numerous terrorist groups, such as Hamas and Egyptian Islamic Jihad.
  • 2002: Suspected in suicide bombing in Grozny.
  • 1979: Suspected in attacking Syrian military academy in Aleppo. 50 Syrian artillery cadets killed

Leaders –
Leader: Muhammad Mahdi Akef (in Egypt)
Founder: Hassan al-Banna (assassinated, February 12, 1949)
Ideological influence: Sayyid Qutb (executed by Egypt, August 29, 1966)
IdeologyThe Muslim Brotherhood’s theology is based on the doctrine of salafiyya: the belief that present-day Muslims have been corrupted and must return to the pristine form of Islam practiced at the time of the Prophet Muhammad. Many Muslim Brotherhood members believe in a radical application of Jihad, which was developed by their ideological leader Sayyid Qutb. Qutb advocated a violent and belligerent approach to the concept of Jihad. This ideology was adopted by terrorist organizations such as al-Qaeda, and Hamas. The group motto is: “Allah is our objective. The Prophet is our leader. Koran is our law. Jihad is our way. Dying in the way of Allah is our highest hope.” The Muslim Brotherhood aspires to establish a caliphate unifying all the Muslim nations.

Goals –
Establishing theocracy in Egypt, the Middle East, ultimately worldwide.

Methods –
Preaching, political agitation and advocating terrorism. The brotherhood participates in elections and attempts to gain influence through the political process. Although it is banned in Egypt, members of the brotherhood have been elected to the legislature there and in Jordan. It also promotes violence against the U.S. and Israel.

Sponsors –
Although banned by various governments, the Muslim Brotherhood presence is generally tolerated amongst Middle Eastern countries.

U.S.-Related Activities –
A document that has surfaced in the trial of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development (HLF), a charity long suspected of supporting terrorists by funneling money to Hamas and its officials, purports to outline a strategic vision of the future of Islamic work in North America. The document – An Explanatory Memorandum On the General Strategic Goal for the Group in North America – appears to be the work of the Muslim Brotherhood. It is written by Mohamed Akram (Adlouni), an alleged Muslim Brotherhood official and one of many unindicted coconspirators in the HLF trial. Some observers suggest that this document identifies a conspiracy by the Muslim Brotherhood to convert the United States to an Islamic nation. Other observers suggest that the document proves how several Islamic organizations are linked to the Muslim Brotherhood and are working together to achieve the goals listed in the document.

    Good job Jack!

Quentin, feel free to ignore “cut and paste portions” from the following websites of interest:

An important aspect of the Muslim Brotherhood ideology is the sanctioning of jihad such as the 2004 fatwa issued by Sheikh Yousef Al-Qaradhawi making it a religious obligation of Muslims to abduct and kill U.S. citizens in Iraq.

Former Brotherhood Supreme Guide Muhammad Akef declared in 2004 his “complete faith that Islam will invade Europe and America.” In 2001, the Muslim Brotherhood’s publication in London, Risalat al-Ikhwan, featured at the top of its cover page the slogan: “Our Mission: World Domination.” This header was changed after 9/11.

Four decades of teaching and cultivation have paid off. The student refugees who migrated from the Middle East forty years ago and their descendants now lead organizations that represent the local Muslim communities in their engagement with Europe’s political elite. Funded by generous contributors from the Persian Gulf, they preside over a centralized network that spans nearly every European country.

These organizations represent themselves as mainstream, even as they continue to embrace the Brotherhood’s radical views and maintain links to terrorists. With moderate rhetoric and well-spoken German, Dutch, and French, they have gained acceptance among European governments and media alike. Politicians across the political spectrum rush to engage them whenever an issue involving Muslims arises or, more parochially, when they seek the vote of the burgeoning Muslim community.

But, speaking Arabic or Turkish before their fellows Muslims, they drop their facade and embrace radicalism. While their representatives speak about interfaith dialogue and integration on television, their mosques preach hate and warn worshippers about the evils of Western society. While they publicly condemn the murder of commuters in Madrid and school children in Russia, they continue to raise money for Hamas and other terrorist organizations. Europeans, eager to create a dialogue with their increasingly disaffected Muslim minority, overlook this duplicity. The case is particularly visible in Germany, which retains a place of key importance in Europe, not only because of its location at the heart of Europe, but also because it played host to the first major wave of Muslim Brotherhood immigrants and is host to the best-organized Brotherhood presence. The German government’s reaction is also instructive if only to show the dangers of accepting Muslim Brotherhood rhetoric at face value, without looking at the broader scope of its activities.

Evidence that stealth jihad is working (fooling all kinds of Americans) follows:

Big Peace- CPAC and the Trojan Brotherhood

    http://bigpeace.com/dwest/2011/02/11/c-pac-and-the-trojan-brotherhood/

In 2008, as McCarthy notes, the Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, Muhammad Mahdi Akef, while praising Osama bin Laden, urged teaching young people the principles of jihad so as to create mujahidin who love to die as much as others love to live. In 2004, the 3/11 bombers in Madrid left behind a tape saying, We choose death, while you choose life. MEMRIs Steven Stalinsky has noted the origins of this necro-parable in the Battle of Qadisiyya, 636, when the Muslim commander called for the conversion to Islam of his Persian enemies for if you dont, you should know that I have come to you with an army of men that love death, as you love life.

Just to be sporting, heres more of the same mystery quotation: What are our oppressors going to do with a people like us? We are prepared to give our lives for the cause of Islam.

Chilling, but not helpful, right? Similar death-cult code could come from any jihadist, from Mohammed Atta, in his night-before-9/11 instructions, to Anwar al-Awlaki, in his e-mails ministering to the underpants bomber, Umar F. Abdulmutallab.

But could it also come from a former Bush administration appointee? A board director of the American Conservative Union (ACU), sponsor of the C-PAC convention in Washington, D.C., where the newest batch of 2012 presidential hopefuls have been speech-o-flexing before 10,000 grassroots activists?

The surprise answer is yes. The former Bush official and ACU board member who I am quoting above is Suhail Khan, a protege, you might say, of the weirdly influential, not-very-conservative activist Grover Norquist. Khans shocking quotation shocking, that is, for a classic conservative, but not for a classical jihadist comes from a 1999 speech Khan gave at another convention, that of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA).

A reminder: Leaders across the free world have recently announced multiculturalism as a failure.

  2. Quentin Colgan says:

All I see here is other people’s opinions.
Opinions are wonderful! I have no doubt that the ADL and the Washington Times have very strong opinions. Alas, they are not evidence–only opinions.

Here too, you have repeated the half-truth that the MB “influenced Osama bin Laden.” In what way was Osama influenced? Why did Osama leave? Is it because they DON’T believe in violence?

Do you guys have any evidence, ie, PROOF that the MB is a terrorist organization? “Suspected” in violence is NOT eveidence of anything. Repeating inflammatory statements actually adds to ignorance.
I am not saying the Brotherhood is not a terrorist organization (Truly, no accurate definition exists), I am not even saying they aren’t violent I am only saying you have not made the case they are. You are only repeating what has ben repeated ad mauseum since the uprising started by the haters on talk radio and FAUX News.

Do you have ANY evidence whatsoever that this Muslim Brotherhood is dangerous?

  3. Toby says:

In this case facts and evidence are irrelevant what is done is done. I fear that Egypt and the rest of the world are going to have another Obama moment.

  4. Tina says:

Since we are without benefit of mind reading capabilities we are left to gather information, as well as evidence, and then draw conclusions. The information that has been gathered here comes from historians, documents, publications and direct quotes like the following:

    http://www.investigativeproject.org/2581/fbi-chief-muslim-brotherhood-supports-terrorism

The scope of the Brotherhood’s vision for the United States was spelled out in a 1991 document called the “Explanatory Memorandum.” In that memo, which federal prosecutors introduced as evidence in two trials of the now-defunct Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, Brotherhood leaders said they planned to create an Islamic state in the United States.

In that document, the Brotherhood’s stated goal was “a kind of grand Jihad in eliminating and destroying the Western civilization from within and “sabotaging” its miserable house by their hands and the hands of the believers so that it is eliminated and God’s religion is made victorious over all other religions.”

We are dealing with an enemy of many stripes and loose associations and affiliations. They don’t wear identifying uniforms. they aren’t required to tell the truth to “infidels” in fact they are encouragesd to deceive for the sake of the mission. We have enough going against us without having to endure Americans who refuse to even consider the information and pieces of evidence that have been collected and shared to keep us advised of possible dangers.

Jacks opening statement, “This is a factual, historical review of the Muslim Brotherhood, much of it taken directly from the organization’s own public documents.

Why do you insist that this is all based on opinion?

  5. Tina says:

Quentin: “Do you guys have any evidence, ie, PROOF that the MB is a terrorist organization?”

Hmmm…are we trying to prove the MB is a terrorist organization? Or are we trying to demonstrate that the MB is a duplicitous organization that has adopted a different approach than violent terrorists but ultimately shares the same goal (and possibly continues to covertly fund terror activities)?

A stealth organization is a bit harder to nail down and is, therefore, much more dangerous in the long run. We would be wise to follow all clues. Can tigers change their stripes?

    http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Statement_to_the_House_on_Terrorist_Financing

In Germany the evil that remained hidden under Hitlers rhetoric allowed for vast approval of his leadership, even among the Jews. We can gather information, capture and prosecute violent terrorists following their violent attacks. We can investigate their activities and prevent some attacks. It takes a very different approach to identify and defeat those who would undermine our constitution with lies and deception while acting as a social organization and pretending to love America.

If proving the MB isn’t a moderate, harmless organization is so da**ed important to you I would think it up to you to “prove” we have nothing to worry about…good luck with that. In the mean time I would rather we erred on the side of caution.

  6. Post Scripts says:

I would rather err on the side of caution too Tina, that’s why I feel the MB is not a trustworthy org. I can’t begin to imagine why Quentin thinks we’re just doing a right-wing smear job on them for no reason or at least no good reason?

I think Quentin is just trying to wear us down. It’s like I say the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Quentin says how do you know that for sure? That’s just your opinion, wheres the proof. Then I say, because they admitted it in all the newspapers, and we have the pictures and the witnesses and the sunken ships. And Quentin then says or say you say, where’s your proof? I then say, because the freaking Emperor of Japan admitted to starting WWII with us!!! Quentin says, but how do you know it was the Emperor? How do you know he was even Japanese, maybe he only looked Japanese, did you check his birth certificate, maybe he was born in Hawaii? How do you really even know for sure there was a world war II!!? How do you know you are you, how do y…. ARRGGGGHHHHH! Enough…I’m dropping this thread!
