government overreaching is a HUGE problem.
    What is your solution?

Don’t throw all the babies out with the bathwater Jack – I consider myself to be an “environmentalist.” My step-dad, who was also from Texas, always told me, “smart birds don’t poop in their own nest…”

I don’t throw trash out my car window. I conserve water and energy around my house. I keep my consumption down to what I feel I need, and I think twice or three times about my actions. I wish our various government entities, and just people themselves, would think more about things.

I never asked for those twirly light bulbs. I knew immediately that they were bad – I had just spent over $1000 having all the mercury fillings taken out of my teeth! Let me tell you what a clam bake that was! My dentist had to work really hard, I had so many fillings. But I’m not stupid, and I can’t believe anybody ever thought it was okay to fill a child’s mouth with mercury. Some dentists still use mercury, I had a devil of a time finding a dentist for my kid who does not use it. Why do they use it? Cause it’s cheap. Know why it’s cheap? Cause it’s a by-product of the mining industry. They have to get rid of it, so they sell it to the dental industry. And now they sell it to the light bulb manufacturers.

Your dentist will now give you a warning about mercury. He/she has to ask you to sign it, acknowledging that you have been told you are having poison put in your mouth. Hey, as long as you know!

Fluoride is also questionable. I just heard another news report about how they are finding fluoridation of water is damaging teeth. I know people with big white stains all over their teeth. But at the same time, you will find cities that are going fourth with fluoridation schemes. Why? Because fluoride is also a by-product of the mining industry. Like mercury, it’s considered toxic, so they have to get rid of it. What better way than to sell it to toothpaste companies and municipalities who think they must protect their constituents from tooth decay?!

It’s the corporations who pervert things. “Environmentalists” didn’t come up with the twirly bulbs – GE, knowing full well they were bad, but knowing they could make a lot of money off them, foisted the twirly bulbs on us.

Yes, government overreach is a huge problem. My solution is to keep on fighting, keep on voting, keep on keeping on. Boycott, use less, just keep up good habits on a daily basis, things are turning around, I can feel it in my bones. Snap, crackle, pop!

Thank you for commenting Juanita and I’m with you. There’s just one thing and I hesitate to even tell you…but, maybe it’s better you just read it for yourself. Remember this wasn’t me saying it, its a doctor with a degree in medicine and he’s not alone. The AMA and other such organizations agree with him.

    Here it is….http://www.quackwatch.com/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/mercury.html

I mention this for your own good – no offense meant.

Oh and here’s one more for good measure: http://www.webmd.com/oral-health/news/20090728/fda-mercury-fillings-not-harmful

Juanita I would call you a smart conservationist rather than an environmentalist. You were tought, as I was, to love and preserve this beautiful place that we’ve been given as a home.

Modern environmentalists, especially those with an extreme agenda, are a tiger with a different stripe. They indeed have pushed for “alternatives” to “save the planet”. I have no reason to defend GE but I will say that companies respond to demand and enviro’s have been demanding a lot (much that has turned out to be bad) over the past 30 years or so. Two examples are the banning of DDT and the funky substance they put in gasoline. Light bulbs are, of course, another “bright idea”.

  5. juanita says:

    Thanks Tina, I agree.

Jack, the link doesn’t work! I get the feeling you’re telling me my dentist was wrong. Then why do they have to hand out the forms? I have received the same forms from both our pediatric dentists too.

I’d like to read the articles though. I’ll check back on those links.

Back in 2007 General Electric announced a breakthrough in incandescent lamps whose characteristics rival compact fluorescent bulbs.

They are also leaders in the more efficient yet still expensive bright LED technology.

  7. juanita says:

I’m sorry Jack, it still doesn’t work. Maybe it’s my computer?

    I’ll GOOGLE it!

  8. juanita says:

I read it, but I’m not convinced.

My dentist didn’t “sell” me – I went in with a rotten tooth – the mercury filling had just disintegrated and needed to be replaced. He offered to re-do all my fillings over the next few months, said they were all in bad shape. He said he didn’t use mercury BECAUSE HE DOESN’T WANT TO HANDLE IT HIMSELF. He has his own health concerns, that’s enough for me. Plus, I’d known this guy for years, and he’d never done us wrong. That counts for something, I know you’d agree.

Then I had the experience of a local pediatric dentist who DOES use mercury. I’d give you his name, but I’m afraid he’d sue me – he’s nuts. Not only has he raised his voice at me, but I know others who’ve had weird experiences with him, including our mutual insurance agent. When I told this dentist I didn’t want mercury fillings for my 4 year old’s mouth, he started yelling at me. He stands about 6’2″ and weighs in at least 200 pounds. He got right in my face and basically yelled me out of his office and then yelled at me across the parking lot as I was walking to my car. Among other things, he told me my son was going to DIE because I was not having his cavity filled! He also told me again and again what a “pathetic idiot” I was.

Let me ask you – is that rational behavior? I was shaking so bad, I could hardly write the check to pay. When I told him that, he threatened me with a collection agency and kept right on screeching at me. His receptionist just sat there with a frightened look on her face, and another woman in the waiting room put down a newspaper to listen to the confrontation.

A few days later I went to another pediatric dentist, this time a woman because that guy rattled me so bad, who told me the tooth did not even need to be filled – it was going to fall out soon, and the new tooth under was perfectly okay. She was right. She was also a lot cheaper than the nutjob.

    Who’s the quack here?

I not only think putting mercury in your mouth is crazy, I think dentists who handle it get crazy too.

Thanks for the conversation. Just because I didn’t change my mind doesn’t mean I don’t like talking about stuff.

  9. Harriet says:

The Flouride conversation is interesting, my hygentist thinks it is wonderful, I live in Paradise our water does not have Flouride in it, I have very sensitive teeth on the bottom she told me to rinse with this mouthwash with flouride and it will help.
Maybe it is a matter of too much is harmful, I sure don’t know. I have Mercury fillings too, but at almost 70 they are staying, lol, I have to wonder about how bad are they, I remember the thermometor that had a mercury ball in it, my brother broke one, picked up the ball and played with it while mom cleaned the glass. While we are on the subject there is also lead, we are told you can’t have lead in paint harmful to kids who might lick the paint??, yet lead toys were prevelant, again, my brother had lead soldiers as did my son actually, I do wonder if there is an over reaction in trying to tell us what is good for us.

  10. Spurwing Plover says:

Have you ever noticed that the ones tell us to change our lifestyles and live a more simple life are the same ones who live in big fancy homes and have gas guzzling 4 mpg limos and commute all over the world in their gulf-stream jets or 707s?
