Another Texas Cowboy Joins the GOP Race

Governor Rick Perry has officially entered the GOP primary announcing his run for the presidency in Charleston, South Carolina. His official website features a bold plan and headlines a slogan that is bound to stir the interests of the American people:

It’s time to get America working again.”

The three term governor of Texas has a record worthy of note. Texas has created more jobs than any other state (40% nationwide) during a national crisis of unemployment. Given the contention surrounding Obamacare, however, it may be that his healthcare policies become even more relevant to his candidacy. Forbes features an article of interest by Avik Roy that compares “Romneycare” with Perry’s healthcare policies in Texas:

If you’re the type who likes to read the end of a book first, you might ask, “Okay, Avik, what’s the bottom line?” The answer will, in part, depend on what you think is important in health care policy. If you’re most concerned about runaway government spending, Perry is the clear winner. If the rising cost of health insurance is your primary worry, Perry wins there too. On the other hand, if universal coverage is your bailiwick, Romney comes out far ahead.

Whether you’re a fan of Rick Perry or not the article on healthcare is well worth a read.

We do live in exciting times. Look at the GOP field and tell me it isn’t true! It is deep and broad. I’ll take Perry over Romney. I would vote for Herman Cain before either.

You don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.

  2. Chris says:

I think any candidate who has openly advocated seceding from the union should immediately be disqualified from the presidential race.

Re: “I think any candidate who has openly advocated seceding from the union should immediately be disqualified from the presidential race.”

    Well, you would.

  4. Tina says:

The Forbes article provides a window into Perry’s far better approach to healthcare:

…the average medical malpractice payment in Texas that year (2010) was $170,632, compared to $336,437 nationally and $484,290 in Massachusetts. ** despite the fact that Massachusetts has far fewer uninsured residents relative to Texas and the country, its Massachusetts that has the highest rate of ER visits. ** Overall, the biggest driver of health care costs is hospitalization. And on at least one measure of hospital utilizationthe number of inpatient days patients spent in hospitalsthe Lone Star wins again, with 548 inpatient days per 1,000 residents, compared to 628 nationally and 635 for Massachusetts. ** the proportion of Texas residents on Medicaid (16.0%) was slightly higher in 2009 than that of the country as a whole (15.7%). Romneycare triggered a rapid increase in Medicaid enrollment in Massachusetts…Massachusetts spent approximately $1,916 per resident on Medicaid in 2009, compared to $973 in Texas and $1,208 nationally

This should make the debates interesting when healthcare becomes the topic, as I’m certain it will.

I guarantee if Texas were to secede from the union as it stands today, the population of Texas as well as it’s GDP and tax base would skyrocket. They would make illegal immigration a priority, by doing that it would help the US. Texas will miss him as governor when he becomes POTUS.
Funny how liberals think we should care what they think of our candidates. lol

  6. Steve says:

    Chris,

I believe he said he could understand WHY some would want to secede from the union, slightly different.

Rick Perry is now the man to beat. He is battle tested, can raise money, and is an unashamedly christian conservative.

The press likes Romney the way the liked McCain, which says a lot. Romney also has Meg Whitman on his team, which says way more. I’ll be pulling for Perry.

  7. Quentin Colgan says:

Perry says that he would not mess with DOMA as it is, indeed, an issue for the states.
That kind of consistency is inconsistent with TEABagger hypocrisy. How in the Hell can the baggerz go for a guy who actually has principles?

  8. Peggy says:

Applying the 80% rule, my order of choice is:

    Herman Cain
    Ron Paul
    Rick Perry

    We’ll see what happens.

  9. Pie Guevara says:

Agreed. Former Democrat Perry will make the debates very interesting.

As for the comments from the “Obama Is God” peanut gallery faithful …

(Bronx Cheer With A Thumb To The Nose)

    Perry Quote —

“There’s a lot of different scenarios,” Perry said. “We’ve got a great union. There’s absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that?”

Yep, who knows? My bet is that, in the very least, Obama is a one term mistake.

  10. Chris says:

Pie Guevara: “As for the comments from the “Obama Is God” peanut gallery faithful …”

Who exactly are you talking about, Pie? Both Quentin and I have criticized Obama numerous times on this blog, over issues such as torture, gay rights, his weakness in the face of Republican opposition…you wouldn’t be attributing positions to me that I do not hold again, would you?

  11. Tina says:

As most of us know “westerners” are notoriously independent and full of grit. I believe Montanans have expressed similar sentiments.

  12. juanita says:

anybody got any idea, why does the media seem to go out of it’s way to ignore Ron Paul, who came in second with 28 percent in the Ames Straw Poll? Romney and Perry hardly registered in that contest, in fact, Perry didn’t even participate.

Ron Paul was similarly ignored and even ridiculed by the media in 2008.

Why do we let the media tell us who’s running for president?

oh, that’s funny – my captcha code is “JIVE”!

  13. Pie Guevara says:

Re Chris’: you wouldn’t be attributing positions to me that I do not hold again, would you?

Awwwww, shucks no. Why I ever do that?

  14. Post Scripts says:

Juanita, I can guess…its because they fear him.

  15. Pie Guevara says:

P.S “you wouldn’t be attributing positions to me that I do not hold again, would you? ”

This from the “bloodlust” fellow. Dang, you are wound way too tight there Chris. I must have touched a nerve.

Again??? I have never ever misrepresented you, Chris. And I never will.

Why should I? It is completely unnecessary. You do just fine misrepresenting yourself. Any comment from me would only get in the way of you contradicting yourself.

  16. Libby says:

Pie, you’re doing our work for us.

I don’t think Perry wants you reminding the rest of the country about his secessionist threats. It’s not very Presidential behavior, really.

  17. Toby says:

Libby you just keep telling yourself that.

  18. Toby says:

I am pleased to see how well Michele Bachmann is doing. We are going to have a strong field of candidates. Maybe we should focus on who the Dems are going to run. This is going to be fun to watch unfold.

  19. Pie Guevara says:

Re Libby: Pie, you’re doing our work for us.

    Who is “us”?
