Teddy Roosevelt said that public employees should be “of the highest moral caliber…”
But now you hear our city and county leaders mouthing the line that we need higher salaries and these outrageous benefits and pensions packages to attract “better people” to public positions. Since when have people of “high moral caliber” been attracted by unsustainable salaries?
Instead of “good people” we’ve got the bottom of the barrel. If only the public would focus on the salaries, demand salary “adjustments” to match the “adjustments” that have been made to the value of our homes – the rats would swim, and anybody who was left would be more likely to be sincere about getting the country back on track.
Did you know, in Germany, they call city hall, “Die Rathaus”?
Quentin I disagree. To me Karl looks more like an aging sixties hippie, now living the high life as an overpaid absentee UC college professor…former democrat and CEO Corzyne fills the bill when he’s not testifying before Congress. I can’t think of a single CEO that looks like Karl, although, the big green supporters and former owners of B & J Ice Cream come close.
Juanita your point is right on the mark!
People used to go into public service jobs for the security the job gave them and they didn’t expect to make big wages and most people in those days were of good moral fiber, much better than we see today. Moral decline across the board has made creating a country that works well nearly impossible. That’s one of the reasons Post Scripts is here. We aim to press for higher standards and values in general.
