“Teddy Roosevelt said that public employees should be “of the highest moral caliber…” But now you hear our city and county leaders mouthing the line that we need higher salaries and these outrageous benefits and pensions packages to attract “better people” to public positions. Since when have people of “high moral caliber” been attracted by unsustainable salaries? Instead of “good people” we’ve got the bottom of the barrel. If only the public would focus on the salaries, demand salary “adjustments” to match the “adjustments” that have been made to the value of our homes – the rats would swim, and anybody who was left would be more likely to be sincere about getting the country back on track.
