I know Jack is going to call me a pedant again, but did you ever notice that Armstrong misquoted himself? On the moon, he said his famous line: “One small step for man,
one giant leap for mankind.”
What he meant to say was: “One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” By leaving the word “a” out, he completely ruined the quote. He was obviously trying to do a rhetorical parallel and contrast, with “one small” and “one giant.” But the contrast falls apart when he says “for man,” which means exactly the same thing as “for mankind.” What he meant was “for a man.”
I can just imagine him on the long flight up there, practicing his line. But then when he finally delivers it, he blows it.
Soaps: Now that you mention it, you’re right! Given the tense situation I probably would have blundered even worse..”Ah, one small man for stepping, er, I mean…one smaller mankind…, no wait…”
