College Student Shock: Healthcare Premiums Soar

Posted by Tina

As if student loans weren’t a big enough burden for today’s college students now many of them are facing higher health insurance costs. As reported by the Washington Examiner the rising costs come as a result of Obamacare:

Because of a rule in the Affordable Care Act that lifts caps on policy payoffs, the cheap insurance policies typically healthy students previously got are skyrocketing, some over 1,000 percent. The reason: Without payoff caps, insurance firms are boosting prices to cover their potential losses.

One example: a late July email to incoming students from Guilford College of Greensboro, N.C. revealed a jump from $668 to $1,179, a 75 percent jump. The reason stated: “Our student health insurance policy premium has been substantially increased due to changes required by federal regulations issued on March 16, 2012 under the Affordable Care Act.”

The same is happening with small business and individual policies. Several reasons can be found here.

Forbes also has an excellent article explaining the thinking behind PPACA, the bill that was passed with promises of lower premium costs, and the reality now that it has passed.

The real cost and hidden negative impact on individuals is beginning to come out. With more to come as this law goes into place next year and beyond if it’s not overturned.

    Another related story:

I’d bet after getting hit with the higher prememium no student will be willing to sign up to be a volunteer for extra credit while working on Obama’s campaign.

A school in Colorado offered the credit and then had to pull it because it violated Ed Code.

I wonder if the same is going on at Chico State and other public funded schools in Calif. and other states?

Tax-supported State School Campaigns for Obama:

A new report from CampusReform.org reveals that a taxpayer-funded college in Colorado jumped into the effort to re-elect Barack Obama to the White House, but then backed off quickly when questioned about the political effort.

The Campus Reform report said Adams State University offered students course credit to volunteer on President Obamas re-election campaign.

The move, the website reported, may have violated the Colorado Fair Campaigns Practices Act, Section 1-45-117, which bans the use of public resources for campaigns involving the nomination, retention, or election of any person to any public office.

Well, Blowsi did tell us they had to pass the bill so we could find out what was in it.

And thanks to the thugs in the black robes for making sure this gets crammed down our throats, especially the criminal Roberts.

But I’m sure Chris and Libby will tell us this Obammie Care is just wonderful

This is one of the big student health insurance agencies: http://www.studentinsuranceagency.com/
You can click on there and check rates. However they don’t seem to offer insurance in New Jersey (Rutgers) of North Carolina. Must have problems with local laws.

Here is the page for California colleges:
    https://www.studentinsuranceusa.com/domestic/2DomesticCA/domesticplans2.php

You can see that the plan has a $100,000 cap now, last year it had a $50,000 cap. Not much of a change in rates from last year.
